Trigger clauses

Genuine question. A trigger clause for a contract extension, I assume, is going to be something like no. of games played, internal performance votes, am I missing something else? So.... in that case..... if you don't want to trigger an extension, surely a club can control that. Example: Carlisle. The cub wanted his salary out for 2020. Imagine his trigger clause was 10 games played. So don't select him for more than nine games. It seems simple to me. Am I missing something?

Probably, but no player manager is going to stand for a Club not picking a player to void a 'trigger clause'

The last thing the AFL wans is for anybody to challenge their 'rules' in court.
Can you imagine if they could prove that a player 'lost' his contract (worth?) because he was deliberately not selected?
