Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
All momentum is lost. Supporters of teams in the finals are getting impatient and just want to see their teams play, whilst those like us just want trade week to commence.
Both are stupidly delayed by a week.
But the AFL and their obsession with money over fairness will keep this stupid bye week forever, due to two reasons:
(1) it enables a Thursday night final (rates a lot better than the Sunday arvo final it replaces)
(2) gives an extra week to sell tickets to the qually and elimination finals - money which goes straight to the AFL!
Bad luck for the top 4 and losing the advantage they deserve.

Re: Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
given the games are sell outs except for the GWS at this stage - the AFL, the fans and I would disagree

Re: Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
Geelong/Pies will always sell well. An extra week may bump it up 5K.
Re other two sellouts - Brisbane game may not quite have sold out had it been played 2 days ago, WCE yes would’ve have.
Depends on the matchups - an extra week of selling can’t hurt. Also helps the AFL justify more seats at higher prices for the big games.
Still sucks for the top 4

This is the first year I didn’t miss football during the bye. The other years I was a bit pissed off there was a week off but I don’t mind it now.

I don't mind it as the players bodies are Aching at this time of year so a week off to recover is fine. It does come at the expense of momentum to a degree but not a lot so I'd rather all players freshened up instead

I like the bye. If we’re in the finals I want our players to have a week off to freshen themselves for the big games. It may also even the comp out a bit, which as Rubyjo said may lead to better games.

I don't mind it, gives teams a chance to get their best players out on the park and we all want to see the best players play the game

Its a contrived joke. AFL CEO ego child, fathered by Ross Lyon being, again, too clever by half. You'd think Gillon would not appreciate being violated/played by Rossy, but he can't let himself abandon their child. New regime will resume sensible transmission.

Re: Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
I see where you’re coming from, but couldn’t the whole thing be considered a contrived joke?
- The ‘FIXture“
- The massive imbalance in stadium deals and consequent financial outcomes
- the imposition into the comp of teams from rugby heartlands with zero culture, lame outfits, lame names and lame crowds
- The propping up of said franchise teams at the expense of the rest of the comp (GC priority pick come on down)
- Huge home crowd advantages to the teams from WA and SA
- Mach scheduling entirely governed by TV
- Rule changes every five minutes to ‘engineer’ a different game
I’m sure there are plenty of other examples

Re: Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
If you want a better standard of game in the finals go back to 5 sides qualifying - also giving the Minor Premier the advantage of having Week 1 of the Finals Series off
8 sides qualifying is a nonsense - because you virtually only have to finish in the top half to play finals

I used to think that too. Then the Dogs won it from 7th.To the top wrote: ↑Mon 02 Sep 2019 7:45pm If you want a better standard of game in the finals go back to 5 sides qualifying - also giving the Minor Premier the advantage of having Week 1 of the Finals Series off

What is it now, 8 years and counting? Someone should tell the boys they only have to finish in the top half and they can play finals!!To the top wrote: ↑Mon 02 Sep 2019 7:45pm If you want a better standard of game in the finals go back to 5 sides qualifying - also giving the Minor Premier the advantage of having Week 1 of the Finals Series off

Doesn't bother me, the season ended for my team last week.
It was a good day at Caufield for the Memsie stakes.

We are not in the finals so not very interested BUT
there is still snow on them mountains.
A bit slushy in the afternoons now, but also cheaper prices.
More fun than footy because on the mountain your team never loses.
I will head on up in a weeks time and return after the granny.

Re: Stupid bye week again stuffs up the season
I agree with the OP. It's a real momentum killer. I can't see us winning another game this year and I blame the bye!
