Wait and see for Brown
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/bro ... 52lqb.html
“St Kilda veteran Nathan Brown's future is up in the air with the club unable to guarantee the premiership defender a place on their list in 2020 after his exit meeting this week.
Brown has been told he remains a wait-and-see proposition, with the Saints to let the coming weeks unfold before making a definitive call on the lockdown backman.”
The whole defensive picture is up in the air.
Carlisle and Brown both potentially not on the list in 2020.
This bit is an interesting stat.
“Brown remained relatively sound defensively, with the lowest one-on-one loss ratio of any player in the competition to have been involved in 50 or more contests.”.
Maybe they see him as not having enough diversity in his game.

Re: Wait and see for Brown
We're targeting Ryder and Tomlinson, and Max King will also come in.
We may also get B King.
Then there's McCartin.
And, what we do with Bruce and Carlisle isn't certain yet.
As excellent as Brown has been, it's logical that a tall over the age of 30 would have to wait until we know which of these guys will be at the club.

But yet we give Joyce a two year contract.

Re: Wait and see for Brown
Another somewhat perplexing situation IMO
I would be more than happy to have Brown on the list playing for Sandy and coming in for injury.
Why are the players that can actually play seemingly on the outs whilst guys that aren’t clearly top 22 being given long contracts?

Re: Wait and see for Brown
It is the correct decision, but what a f***** waste of time it was getting him in the first place.
Instead of focussing on developing players and completing the rebuild properly they made list management errors which have delayed the inevitable
We got the guy in because the incompetent coach and leadership at the time believed we were contenders.
Since we bottomed in 2013-2015 there have been too many mistakes with list management. I love Chips and he was my favourite player but we kept him and other oldies on the list far too long.
For example, we had Sam Gilbert playing seniors ahead of others and he was still on the list and contracted in 2018. So too many oldies(which seems were are doing with Ryder) plus we hope some other list cloggers come good with Nath Wright, Minch, Pierce, Longer, Shenton, Weller, and other VFL grade footballers who we persisted with instead of making the hard correct decisions early

Only Tomlinson (Possible key defender) is relevant as to whether Brown plays on.
Brown is still more than capable of holding down FB. S0 retention is more about now if we have young players or not that we want to grow into FBs.

Re: Wait and see for Brown
Brown cost us nothing and has been very solid for us. It's okay to crow about player development, but who else could have done the job better than him? I really hope Logan Sustin can become a key back, but he needs to get stronger. He was averaging about 18 touches a game when he played, so he knows how to get the ball, but his one on one work needed improvement. As for Darragh Joyce, well, I'm surprised the club rated him highly enough to offer him 2 more years. They see something I don't. I hope they're right and I'm wrong

...... and Tomlinson will never be a key posiiion player. If our football department believe that he can, they are living in a fantasy world

Re: Wait and see for Brown
Exactly. Can people investigate just a little before they think player x will be the saviour
Tomlinson is almost exactly the same size and type of player as Marsh
Do we need another Marsh?

Brown can't ruck though.terry smith rules wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 10:13amAnd how old is RyderBarryGrogan wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 7:27am We're targeting Ryder and Tomlinson, and Max King will also come in.

FWIW though, the key to any defence is really the midfield.
If we can beef up our midfield, we could afford to lose some quality from defence.
Don't get me wrong, we're not a contender next year either way.

Gold Coast have said B King is not up for trade, he has a year to go on his contract.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 7:27am We're targeting Ryder and Tomlinson, and Max King will also come in.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
