"FL Daily: St Kilda offers new contract to Jack Newnes, rolling footy news for Thursday, August 22, 2019

St Kilda has offered wingman Jack Newnes a two-year deal to remain at Moorabbin beyond this season.
The free agent looks vulnerable to a poaching raid from a rival who is prepared to offer the hard-running midfielder a longer contract.
Newnes, 26, has been a solid contributor for the Saints over his 154-game career, averaging 18 possessions across 21 matches this season.
But he finished outside the top 10 of the best-and-fairest last year and a modest two-year deal from the Saints could see Newnes look elsewhere for 2020.
Newnes is a restricted free agent, meaning the Saints have the capacity to match any deal.
At his age, a rival’s offer up to $450,000 per season over three years for Newnes could potentially net the Saints a second-round pick.
St Kilda is keen to bolster its midfield with top-end talent in this year’s exchange period and has targeted Fremantle running machine and triple Hawthorn premiership player Brad Hill.
Hill, 26, is contracted to Fremantle for next year but is weighing up several options to return to Victoria next season.
Greater Western Sydney utility Adam Tomlinson, 26, is also expected to depart the Giants at season’s end after having his attempt to move to St Kilda scuttled two years ago.
His flexibility and running power are his main weapons, with the Oakleigh product able to impact the game in a key position or on the wing.
It means the Saints are set for a busy trade period as the club looks to build around a solid core group of midfielders including A-graders Jack Billings, Jade Gresham and Seb Ross.
Four-time best-and-fairest winner Jack Steven, 29, looks set to pursue a move to Geelong, although he is contracted at Moorabbin for one more season.
The Saints may entertain an offer from Geelong in the vicinity of a second-round draft pick.
Hard-nosed Geelong midfielder Charlie Constable has also been linked to a move to St Kilda and could be part of a Steven swap."

Re: Newnes contract offer
2 year deal offer may push up free agent compensation. may be a smart play knowing he wants to leave . Think it would be beneficial to both parties, he has stalled last 2 seasons for many reasons.

Would be a good outcome if it increases his free agent compensation.older saint wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2019 8:15pm 2 year deal offer may push up free agent compensation. may be a smart play knowing he wants to leave . Re: Newnes contract offer
Agree older saint, certainly not pricing him out of the market but lining us up for a 2nd rounder as compensation.older saint wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2019 8:15pm 2 year deal offer may push up free agent compensation. may be a smart play knowing he wants to leave . I hope he plays his best game for two seasons on Sat arvo.

Re: Newnes contract offer
Definitely a list clogger however we need players to delist in 2 years time as it looks like we already have a full quota of delistments this year.
Others will go past him next year but as a back up he brings experience .... and clangers

Re: Newnes contract offer
What is it with out list management team overrating our hacks?
Would be funny if it weren't so serious.
Are they setting us up to fail?

Re: Newnes contract offer
I always hope others will go past these type of guys but in reality while he plays possible replacements don't get game time.
And he doesn't get injured
And he doesn't get injured

Re: Newnes contract offer
Has to get another contract
We've got 5 guys who may be out the door due to concussion and other issues. Add to that the oldies Armo and Rowe .
Then there's the younger ones who have been at the club for a number of years that don't look like are good enough for AFL.

Everyone talks as if a 2 year contract means 2 years as a starting 22. If Newnes is the 45th best player on your list - your list is looking pretty healthy. He is not a complete disaster and he plays for the jumper.
We do not know the clubs plans - we do not know what he has been asked to do - WE JUST DONT KNOW
Stop slagging off players that wear the RW & B unless you can do better - or offer better alternatives.

Newnes is a dud and has been for years. He’s getting worse not better.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Fri 23 Aug 2019 9:04amThis!mr six o'clock wrote: ↑Fri 23 Aug 2019 7:17am Has to get another contract

Saying that, when Ro$$ the Bo$$ is made our coach, he will make GOAT captain and want him signed for 5 years.

Re: Newnes contract offer
Love the passion Sainter Dad and you are right, if he was the 45th player our 22 would be incredibly strong. Reality is, no matter how poor Newnes is, he seems to be an automatic in our 22. We aren't moving from the bottom 6 while that is the case.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Fri 23 Aug 2019 9:04amThis!mr six o'clock wrote: ↑Fri 23 Aug 2019 7:17am Has to get another contract

We cannot keep fielding the same type (tripe) of players and expect a different result. This is why the one change for this round is perplexing, a senior game into Clavarino, Langlands, White, Rice or Phillips makes more sense than getting to watch the same return from the likes of Newnes & Co.

Re: Newnes contract offer
I guess they want to get another preseason into those young guys and don't want to risk getting them injured in a dead rubber - especially not just to satisfy fans' curiosity.

Re: Newnes contract offer
I like it. Don't know the offer made to him and from the sounds of things it's not muc. If he accepts then we get a value for money player that helps free up salary space, if he leaves we lose an average player.

It would seem that we are likely to gain Tomlinson as a FA. Newnes and Tomlinson are only 5 months apart in age, with Newnes being the older player. You would imagine that Tomlinson would attract more contract years and $$$ than a club would offer Newnes, and if so no compensation for us.
