Parker vs Long
Who has more upside?
I notice Long had 4 disposals and 1 goal 2 inside 50s and 92 meters gained
Vs
Parker 11 disposals, 1 goal, 4 inside 50s and 392 meters gained
and yet Long retains his spot and Parker is dropped.
Neither have stood out this year, but for me, Parker had had the better year and given he is new to AFL, has done better and has more upside. Another preseason and he could be a really good medium tall, quick pressure forward.

Re: Parker vs Long
Parker is so overrated on here. He is a park footballer that gives away free kicks left, right and centre. long is not much chop either though but seems to have a bit of x-factor.
Young will be gone I would think.

Re: Parker vs Long
Both could be much better players, they have the skills but the work is between the ears. Need the coach (Ratts or whoever) to get them in the right frame of mind- I reckon Clarkson would really get them up and about.

Re: Parker vs Long
At the moment it’s a form thing
Gotta remember that the forward pocket role is one of the hardest in AFL. Both have played good games and stinkers.
At the moment I like Parker more because he has more weapons though isn’t as naturally skilled.
He has to close the gap btw his best and worst.
Long clearly has more talent and X-Factor... but he tends to be really undisciplined and often unsighted in games. I wonder about workrate off-field and if it’s everything it could be
Either way, both stay on the list for another year and both have a lot to to... but both also have a lot of talent

Re: Parker vs Long
Both have a a lot of talent and physical gifts, BUT both do not really know what to to do as AFL players.
There is too much see ball- get ball going on. Attacking flair is good, but AFL is also very much a team game and in team play they are not so good.
I was hoping that Long had turned the corner against the Dees and he played a good disciplined but still offensive game. But then against the Crows he went MIA again.
Parker's field kicking lets him down as well.
Parker is new to the AFL system though. However he did not really seem to develop as a player over the year.
Both are certainly worth keeping, but both could also easily end up on the scrap pile at the end of next season.
Parker is older, but has been in the AFL system less than a year, and before that has had little experience at good standard clubs. So hopefully another pre-season and coaching will help him a lot.
They will have Ratts or a new coach in charge next season. Let us hope that it is a break out year for both.

Re: Parker vs Long
Unlike a few of our other players these guys stick their tackles. Both are hard at it and you know you've been bumped if they are within range.
Having the ability to hurt someone is a weapon that is easily as good as kicking 1-2 goals for your team (like Ben Long did to Levi Casboult when we played Carlton and he got reported for what loooked like a high hit...but it wasn't). Casboult felt like he was in a car crash and may have suffered concussion and definitely looked like he got whiplash
I think we have to encourage this sort of skill and both have the speed to hurt. It's like old fashion footy. It weakens your opposition and in some cases if you eliminate a good player's impact you are half way to getting your team over the line.
I wouldn't be looking at just one game of footy to evalutae who has more upside. I reckon Ben is a better set shot at goal and Long is also more creative imo and most importantly - is a better field kick. If they are competing for exactly the same position, I'd have Ben in front. If Ben or Mat were left footed, I'd have them both in front of Lonie

Glad we took a chance, I have hope for Parker, especially if we acquire Hill. Long still needs work but worth persevering with. Agree about Young but like to see all given another AFL pre season & opportunity.

Parker goes for everything, even when he shouldn't. The number of times he spoils teammates, especially Bruce is infuriating!

Re: Parker vs Long
I wonder if us fans influenced the selection of Parker, who played in my (esteemed) opinion at least four more games than his form has warranted. Surely they don’t just pick ‘fan favorites’ do they? Especially at the beginning of the year. I don’t accept that we give people ‘time to improve’ in the firsts when premiership points are for sale, when proven players languish in the seconds and we compromise our capacity game day.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Both might make it, but I think Long has the bigger upside.

Jeez, if they did that, explain Newnes run of games?shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 10 Aug 2019 2:12pm I wonder if us fans influenced the selection of Parker, who played in my (esteemed) opinion at least four more games than his form has warranted. The next question has to be who are the proven players left to languish?
I do believe when we've kids with talent we play them in the firsts. It is working for Paton, Clark, Coffield and Marshall. It will work for Clavarino and would have worked for White. We embraced mediocrity & were left with a core of senior players that have hit a ceiling.
Dare to dream I say.

Re: Parker vs Long
Hardest position on the ground to play nowadays. You play fwd of the footy, yet rarely get the ball directed through you, and you first job is to trap the ball i50 and provide pressure.
Sometimes given a job to shut down defender.
Especially hard to be consistent.
12ppg a goal and 3 tackles is a serviceable game, any numbers better than that usually signify a good game

Both have a habit of getting in the way of our key forwards.
It was Long's hip that caused Paddy's latest concussion.

They both have the hardest role in modern day footy. We have to remember that. The coaches do too.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Parker vs Long
Said it before, will say it again. Not convinced of that, I believe the young female trainer popped the lid off the water bottle a little too close to Paddy.
Yes, Long & Parker need to learn when to contest & when not to. End of the day, would rather a contest than not one.
