Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
Paddy the great has played an incredible 29 AFL games in his past 4 seasons (including 2019).
What’s even worse is our mate Billy Boy Longer, who has managed a putrid 23 games over the same period, with 17 of those in 2017!
If both of these aren’t delisted at the end of the year I’ll spew

Re: Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
I don't think either will play again but there is no need to pot the blokes. The injuries are out of their control and they are not healthy ones. They need support going forward post footy.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.
Total = 1.

I doubt those players will be on Saintsational looking for support.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sun 04 Aug 2019 11:45am I don't think either will play again but there is no need to pot the blokes. The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
If they don't show consistency and can't cement a spot in the seniors after 3-4 years, then move them on. We had a chance to bite the bullet and trade Paddy at the end of 2017 but we had this blind faith and romanticism that Elshaugh's decision would eventually come good.Special wrote: ↑Sun 04 Aug 2019 10:34am Paddy the great has played an incredible 29 AFL games in his past 4 seasons (including 2019).

The Saints have had this mentality over the past 6-7 years where they offer contracts to players because they are cheap or perceived good value. I'm pretty sure we retained Paddy on that basis (as well as hoping he'd live up to that No 1 draft pick) rather than signing him based on the player achieving performance hurdles.

Re: Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
The difference between the 2 is McCartin due to injury has not been available for much of this time , while Longer has been inconsistent and therefore not picked for part of this time.

Re: Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
I don't think that's fair. Hanners has been on the field at least 80 minutes over his two games, and that's about 10,000 dollars a minute, so we give give good Bang-for-Buck for Banged-up-Players and we just might hire Banger himself too.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Yep but those in denial will still tell you a better pick up than Petracca.
Will go down one of the worst draft selections ever.

Not if trades are included!
Hannabery, Lovett, Freeman make picking Paddy look like a stroke of genius!

So picks 28, 16 and 28 respectively?
Yeah... na. Not even close. Paddy was pick 1 and it should have been Petracca.

Luck of the draft year has a bit to do with it. Wasn't exactly a Walsh draft type certain #1.Spinner wrote: ↑Mon 05 Aug 2019 2:32amSpecial wrote: ↑Sun 04 Aug 2019 10:34am Paddy the great has played an incredible 29 AFL games in his past 4 seasons (including 2019).

Collingwood lucked out that year.
That said, we panicked, Roo's pending retirement, Boyd signing with Dogs. Even though most had Petracca with Brayshaw & Paddy on the next line.

Re: Since start of 2016: McCartin and Longer
Chris Judd and Max King would probably have gone at Number 1 if clubs had ignored the injury concerns
If it came down to the crunch, who would really have taken Paddy at number 1 or 2? A few other clubs were probably selling us bs so that they could pick up the player that they really wanted.
There were too many risks involved with taking a diabetic with the known history McCartin had as a junior (there's a news story that I'd googled and provided in a previous thread which highlighted Paddy's problems with a concussion incident and his recovery issues due to his diabetes).
Type 1 diabetes is very very serious. He had issues with his fitness levels and we ignored that his diabetes could hamper his ability to train at the required level. All these issues were dismissed instead of being looked at as a handicap.
In hindsight...The smartest thing would have been to trade our number 1 pick and get 2 picks in the first round. We still may have got Paddy or perhaps another KPF. 'Two metre Peter' ( Wright ) has played 66 games and looks like being a 200 game player.

But we’ve stated even last year you have to take risks with draft picks in order to get a step ahead. Yet also sign up duds for contact extensions at the same time.Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 06 Aug 2019 2:08am Chris Judd and Max King would probably have gone at Number 1 if clubs had ignored the injury concerns

With 20-20 hindsight we should've picked Judd, Brayshaw - and Chris Fagan.

Remember it has Petracca even more of a certain number 1 before we changed our mind late.
Walsh developed as number one as Carlton were very much into him. Petracca was looking like 1 regardless of the club.
It’s an absolute shame and it’s probably cost our head recruiter at the time his role.
