The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Never seen anything like that in any level of footy. Umpire pays Marshall a free in the ruck contest Dunstan roves the ball takes three or four steps then puts his hand up stops because he has no advantage. He then throws the ball back to Marshall. Now I’ve seen that down hundreds of times and the infringed player takes his kick.
Not tonight the umpire pays a free for a throw and gives Adelaide the ball.
Absolute disgraceful umpiring.

I think the Membrey non-holding the ball call in the last was worse.

I have never seen that before. Umps were pretty bad tonight. They gifted Adelaide some goals.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Yeah there were a few poor decisions. Marshall is one who gets pushed and scragged and rarely gets a call.

Then later in the game he kicks a goal after a free to Bruce and the umpire brings it back.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 03 Aug 2019 11:53pm I have never seen that before. Umps were pretty bad tonight. They gifted Adelaide some goals.

I thought he initially took the advantage and played on, was called play on, then he stopped. Too late then.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Why didn’t the umpire let the goal he kicked stand then.
Clearly Dunstan didn’t hear the advantage call and he most likely wasn’t 100% sure who’s free it was.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Because kicking at goal is different, they call time off when the set the mark, so the play on advantage must be instantaneous and in the flow of play from an i50 free kick

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Untrue. Plenty of times players have taken the advantage and kicked a goal and it’s stood.
Umpire made a very poor desision and again it was against us.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Again, you can get an advantage i50
But if the ump has blown time off, you cannot, so the advantage call must come first... ie there must not be a stop in the play.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
As soon as an umpire blows his whistle isn't that effectively time off? If that's the case there would never be advantage.
The umpire simply blows his whistle again & squeaks "Advantage, play on".
I've seen a number of times the ball bobbling about in the goal square after a free has been paid, then a player swoops in and kicks a goal. Allowing the umpire to squeal "Advantage, all clear"

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
Very good point, that was a shocker.
I posted this in the match thread, this is probably a better thread...
I don't usually mention umpires but they have to get better. They must pay what they see, not what they hear.
Players perform in a hostile environment, umpires must as well.
They get paid professional wages, train & ponce about as professionals but they are really amateurs.

Home town stuff. We’re never going to get a decent run over there, at least until we are a much better side.
You need to shut their moronic supporters up on the road and the only way to do that is with constant scoreboard pressure.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
The whole advantage rule is a joke. The whistle blows, some players stop, some keep going and the umpire makes an arbitrary decision on whether it’s play on or not.
The umpire is trying to set the mark and must decide if play was “continuous” while it goes on behind his back. No help from the other umpires it seems.
The free to Bruce, which spilled to Dunstan was continuous but was called back after Dunstan kicked the goal.
There was a free to the Crows on the opposite wing where another Crow picked up the ball and tried to kick it but was tackled and the ball dribbled forward, but this was brought back for some unknown reason. The rule says it’s the player’s decision.
They should just not blow the whistle until it’s clear that there’s no advantage.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
It was pretty funny how the Adelaide player who got the free kick then turned it back over when Dunstan intercepted it..... whilst standing the mark.....

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
It works in soccer because the umpires are good enough not to blow a whistle and allow play to go on to assess if there's an advantage. If not, they'll stop the play and bring it back.
We are a generation behind in our umpires being good enough to do that.

I think that's the point though isn't it? The ball was punched clear of the contest to Dunstan, but the umpire blew time off without looking to see whether thrre was advantage.
If he had of, it would have been advantage.

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
The one that pissed me off was the NO FREE to Carlisle after which Betts kicked a goal
Carlisles legs were taken out but no free !!
Our ball use was poor but the umps were also poor

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
The advantage rule in AFL is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in this game. Why is it the umpires call if there is to be advantage? It should be up to the player and if they decide to dispose of the ball, then it's play on. If they decide after a second that they don't want to take the advantage then it comes back. What's so hard about that??? Other sports get it right whats so different about this one that it has to be so difficult?

Re: The ridiculous free against Dunstan
It’s not the umpires call it is the players call. The issue in recent times is the umpire calling advantage and then when it is not really advantage calling it back as no advantage, that is definitely not the umpires decision (as stated in rules)Trixilver wrote: ↑Sun 04 Aug 2019 10:29am The advantage rule in AFL is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in this game.
