Fighting for their careers or done for.

ST KILDA

Billy Longer

David Armitage

Jonathan Marsh

Sam Rowe

Nathan Brown

Lewis Pierce

The Saints wrestled with their best ruck line-up for years but now the future seems clear after Rowan Marshall’s remarkable breakout season. That’s not good news for Billy Longer or Lewis Pierce — especially with the Saints reportedly keen on bringing in another ruckman from another club. Jonathan Marsh and Sam Rowe were recruited as ready-made back-ups but have played limited minutes (Marsh five games, Rowe none) despite a long injury list. And calls will have to be made on warriors David Armitage (age 31, two games this year) and Nathan Brown (30, 13 games).

Marsh - yes

Brown - yes.

The rest are not so much 'no', more - 'you're kidding right?'

NJB is a required player.
Marsh could stay on.

Marsh and Brown are surely safe.

Brown has worked hard to deserve another contract. Whether he is in our best 22 remains to be seen, but he is a fine clubman and will play games in 2020.
Marsh did not have the benefit of a pre-season and is just 23.
Both retained.

Maybe one more year for Pierce & one more for Brown?

All others plus Rice gone for mine.

Only keep Marsh and Brown (1 year only).

Marsh and brown tick. Depending on concussion outcomes, would swap pierce for longer. Hes miles ahead if he wants it. Looking at our potential best 22 next year, which will likely include atleast one king, we really only need a back up rather than a Goldstein type ruck.

I think Marsh will be more than a handy back up after a full pre-season.

The problem is where does he fit in exactly? We have many of his type on our list and he also has no stand out attributes.

Brown’s future for 1 more year will revolve around the assessments of Claravino and Austin and their ability to hold down the key last line defensive position

In a best case scenario Brown is surplus to requirements

In regard surplus to requirements this is also the threat to Armitage particularly given those getting games ahead of him

On the same theme we have a surplus of “half back flankers” and “small forwards”

What is evolving with our defence is the emergence of Clark and Coffield in the positions they attracted Draft credentials - then you have Wilkie

The competition for “flank defenders” sees White’s VFL form not rewarded - even with Webster, Geary and Roberton not available

So I would be looking at these “small defenders” for some List casualties (or trade) and some names may surprise starting with Geary, Savage, Webster and McKenzie (and depending on Roberton where any further absence may save the bacon of one)

Same with the “small forwards”. We will restructure our forward line in 2020 with Bruce and King (McCartin?) then Membrey so one “small” is gone Plus if we add to our mids there is the prospect of Gresham and Steven in the F50 - adding to numbers starting with Long and Lonie (White improvement has come in the nick of time). So this leaves several “small forwards” vulnerable starting with the mature recruits being Parker, Hind and Young

Who we are able to Draft will put pressure on - as will and Free Agents we are able to attract

The one requirement is support for Marshall (also allowing Bruce to play forward exclusively)

We know who our “will retain” are

It is the next tier down where there may be surprises in regard who is not there in 2020

Look at who is competing for which spots

Why is Brown anywhere near this list?
He is our Full Back and should remain so until there is compelling evidence that there is a better replacement.

I actually think there's a case that he's been our most consistent player for the past 2 years.

Anybody who has bothered to watch, rather than comment on, the past two games would have seen why Brown will be offered another year.

Assuming McCartin retired and players highlighted get back on the park, round 1 looks interesting.
Not allowing for a bolter (say Bytel), a draft pick or a free agent coming into the team.

It shows we have plenty of depth but short of class as we know, or does it just look like depth because players have been given a run due to injury?

Are we going to be markedly better replacing Wilkie with Roberton or Paton with Geary?
What about losing a small/mid sized forward like Long or Parker for King?

Imagine adding a Cognilio or two Hills to that team?
One can dream!

B: Geary Carslile Webster
HB: Savage Battle Roberton
C: Clark Ross Billings
HF: Gresham Bruce Steven
F: Lonie King Membrey

R: Marshall Steele Hannebery

INT: Dunstan Sinclair Acres Coffield

EMG: Wilkie Long Hind Newnes Parker Brown Clavirino Paton Phillips Langlands Kent Mc Kenzie Young Marsh

I always thought Brown was older. He's safe for two years. I suspect the rest of our backline players and whoever is the backline coach will be happy he's on the list...ideally not in our best 22 if others are good enough to keep him out of it.

Marsh is a bonus from this year. At least one more with a full pre season.

Wilkie is one of the first picked in my team.
Even if Robbo gets back, which I don't see happening, I would find a spot for both of them.
Smart skilful and cool under pressure.

I think one can safely add White and Rice to that list also. Both may still get a chance to show their wares under Ratts, but he is coaching for his future ATM.May not want to take the chance, although he did with Langlands.

Brown and maybe Marsh will be the only players from that list who will be on our list in 2020.

Most of them have already been at the club for a long time.

Pretty sure Brownie hasn't been beaten all season.

Yes, he's not a rebound/run through the lines footballer.
But he is rock solid and neutralises his opponent.

Who was the simpleton who wrote this rubbish article?

Has he/she never heard of White, McCartin, Rice or even McKenzie??

(I don’t rate McKenzie at all)
