Umpires pets
At the risk of feeding certain posters with fake moon landing "evidence"... Saints are certainly not the umpire's pets this year. Bulldogs and Pies up there.

Re: Umpires pets
The really sad thing about that is that the Hawks, Tigers, Swans and Giants give away deliberate free kicks to stop free flowing play and force the opposition to go back and kick over the mark giving them time to man up or set up structures.

Re: Umpires pets
Not too surprised about the Pies. If they’d show a deficit, Eddie would run amok through AFL headquarters.
The Bulldogs always have been the umpires' pets, particularly Rodney Eade’s head was always up the umps’ you-know-what. A member for over 25 years, I used to hate the Saints playing the Dogs because of the umpiring. I distinctly remember one particular game way back at the Etihad, Sunday afternoon with the roof open. The Saints went into the 4th quarter with a handy lead, and then it started. Free kick after Free kick to the Bullies - it almost appeared in rapid succession. Where I sat, everybody was absolutely stunned. The Saints did scrape in with a very narrow margin.
Look at the free kick count of 2016, the Bulldogs’ year, and ask Swan supporters what they think of the 2016 GF.

I thought this thread was going to be about seeing eye dogs.

Yes the umps got the Dogs into the GF after gifting them the tight Prelim against GWS with 23-13 frees.GSG wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2019 2:53pm The Bulldogs always have been the umpires' pets, particularly Rodney Eade’s head was always up the umps’ you-know-what. The free kicks paid is only half the story, the non 50 metre penalty to GWS in the dying minutes was the most scandalous.
Then in the granny the frees were 20-8.
Having said that I was happy the Dogs won.
But they certainly seemed to have some help.
Coincidence or favouritism?

Re: Umpires pets
Eddie probably throws them a bone. Given that the AFL refuses to employ them as professional full-time umpires, I can't say I can blame them if they're accepting bribes.
In my view, the umpiring standards will only continue to suck (particularly for lower-market clubs, like St.Kilda) for as long as the AFL doesn't recognise it as a proper profession and pay them a real wage.

Curb your enthusiasm - you’re a St.Kilda supporter!!

Re: Umpires pets
I believe they are extremely well paid, the issue lies in giving them enough work to fill a working week. This more so than anything else allows them to hold down other jobs, seen as their primary job when in reality it's not.Sainternist wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2019 5:27pm Eddie probably throws them a bone. Re: Umpires pets
Don't forget umpiring also involves judging what's a mark, what's out of bounds and what constitutes a 50-metre penalty.
I reckon we'd be well down in those differentials too.
Let's face it, we've been screwed for years now, probably a lingering reaction to GT era and the various "scandals".

Re: Umpires pets
According to the website, the base salary for a senior umpire is $65,000 and with match payments and maybe a gig in the GF, that can go up to $150,000 p.a. Most of them have a job, with some being professionals. This would make for very handy income. I have never subscribe to the notion peddled by the AFL that they have trouble getting umpires. With such a lucrative carrot, surely there would be no shortage of applicants.Sainternist wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2019 5:27pm Eddie probably throws them a bone. Re: Umpires pets
I used to work with one of the umpires who officiated in our 2009 GF. He is an accountant and I think his salary from that alone goes alright.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2019 6:32pmI believe they are extremely well paid, the issue lies in giving them enough work to fill a working week. Re: Umpires pets
If Collingwood get a bad run with the umpires the media is all over it. Eddie would raise it at every chance he got in the media through out the week. Bang those umpires are now long shots to get a final or GF gig.Sainternist wrote: ↑Sat 27 Jul 2019 5:27pm Eddie probably throws them a bone. No one can argue in such a even season a team having +80 free kicks compared to one with a minus 40 can compete all the time.

Re: Umpires pets
I swear that while watching the Doggies game, some of them were complaining to the umps "but we are the Dogs". Had them stuffedCURLY wrote: ↑Mon 29 Jul 2019 12:27pmIf Collingwood get a bad run with the umpires the media is all over it.
