Former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas has floated the idea of Mick Malthouse coaching the Saints next year.

Thomas took to Twitter to endorse the former Collingwood and Carlton coach, who last week threw his hat back in the coaching ring — provided he was the best man for the job."

An international team selector once said the following to me (not verbatim but as I remember it best):
- Sports that have trials and winners of those trial are easy to adjudicate in team selection, but often the most unfair given in jury etc.
- I (he) prefer a process, and in that process I am not seduced by one great result or a poor result, a process gives you the ability to look at a body of work in total.
- I'd (he) would prefer to look at patterns of performance not isolated events
I relate this to GT, what are the patterns of his Football and media exploits.
Sacked - by North Melbourne and St Kilda, neither seemed justified based upon results of the club at that point in time.
Sacked - by all media TV and Radio jobs he has had.
Social media - headline grabbing, potting the saints or saints players, making outlandish statements.
He is the Neil Harvey dial a quote of the AFL who tries to remain relevant and in the media by making contraversial statements.
Give it up Grant, your time has passed at St Kilda, move on.
Why do media outlets report him on the Saints, he is not relevant, he has no close ties with the club or players, they quote him because he is a headline seeker and they know they'll get something to print.
My favorite saying is "the rear view mirror is 5% of the size of your windscreen as they are proportionate for how much time you spend looking forward than looking back".
Grant move forward please.
FWIT - I wouldn't go backward and have either GT or Ross Lyon back at the Saints, and I am a fan of Lyon and what he did at the Saints.

Re: No Thomo no. Are you insane
he's lost the plot big time.
I don't know why he is saying such garbage.
Malthouse is a grandad now- he's done all that heavy lifting and hard work for years,
and he's probably better off being president of a local lawn bowls club.
Coaching is a huge commitment, needing to view lots of video, etc, lots of meetings, it's probably >80 hrs/week.
Then there's flying interstate too, regularly.
A coach has to have family support, a family that's able to support and work around the incredibly
demanding schedule.
And he must be a current student of the game, and has been an assistant at a club for years.
Someone like Caracella, Knights, Ratten, Harvey, etc

Re: No Thomo no. Are you insane
I'm not saying I would be in favour of Malthouse - prefer Ratten at this stage but that could change. But Micks theory is that if you look at overseas - Alex Ferguson at Man U for instance - he was a manager - there were other people who were coaches but Sir Alex managed everyone that's what Mick sees himself as - he thinks we are too focused on a young coach whereas the NRL and the NFL have a lot of coaches who are old by comparison to the AFL. Just because someone is "old" doesn't mean they wouldn't make a good coach. I know a lot of people on here think he hates the Saints but he doesn't. He has a soft spot for them as he started here, a few weeks ago he was absolutely scathing of the AFL on St.Kildas draw when we had to go to China and then to Townsville. He does talk a lot of sense - most of the time.

Sadly some will still believe he was “innovative” cause he talked corporate jargon on Training Services, belief clouds and took a footy trip overseas.....sadly he couldn’t innovate on field with a game plan that stood up when it mattered
Anyway, he’s irrelevant now - the club know justbyhe media utilise for a headline (often at the clubs expense mind you...)

Not one of GT’s better ideas. He either a) has lost his mind or b) is trying to prod the club towards Ratten. Maybe he imagines himself in the role of coaching director

Long, long ago, GT blew the bridges that lead to "The Valley of Acceptability". He's been contrarian, boorish and cloying (is that a word? ). He was awkward then, as he is now. However, I will never forget the voice of (was it? - I know I just said I'd never forget! ) Andrew Thomson?, when he spoke well after Thomas's demise and he was quite adamant that GT made a huge, positive lasting contribution to the St Kilda Football Club as well as to the generation of players in that era. I'm telling you...it was believable. As I actually thought Andrew Thompson was really speaking his mind, straight up and not media-prepared chiche rubbish.
In my time, I've only had three moments of genuine positiveness, like that feeling of , "ah! That's better...finally, a fair wind to blow the good ship forward". That was; 1) Patterson and 1978 (Me @ 14 yrs old) - it was brief and the ship hit a major reef. 2) Ken Sheldon - an perhaps I owe the doc some for this - from around 1991, and 2004. I remember Thommos first few games and we got a hammering week after week. GT was getting a hammering in the press, like Kerr did after Whitlam. I remember a surprising spark, appearing amidst the gloom, when somehow, we showed patches of goodness and Dermott Brereton said in commentary that GT was a quite a difficult customer for other coaches to deal with on match day. I liked it. Then the next seasons followed and although I regularly winced - rotating captains etc., - I loved the progress. He lost me for not picking Brooks at the end...so I thought his romanticism defeated his pragmatism. I thought Lyon was the ultimate pragmatist and so Lyon could really reap the benefit of having highly motivated players.
I don't want Malthouse but I really honestly don't know what we need...I think it is easier for us to agree about what we do NOT need.

Re: No Thomo no. Are you insane
Mitch Robinson says he didn't want to go to work under Mick.
https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl
'Former Blue Mitch Robinson has revealed how he stopped enjoying footy under Mick Malthouse, but a former St Kilda coach has endorsed a possible return to Moorabbin by the AFL coaching great.
Al Paton and Mick Randall, Herald Sun
Brisbane hard nut Mitch Robinson says Mick Malthouse was so negative as Carlton coach he dreaded going to the club.
Robinson, thriving as a wingman under Chris Fagan at the Lions, says he was surprised when Malthouse put his hand up for one of current coaching vacancies.
He said the game had moved past the three-time premiership mentor, with coaches now required to act as teachers as much as motivators.
“I didn’t want to get in the car and go to work because it was just a hard place to go to,” Robinson said of his 2013-14 seasons at Carlton on his iTunes and YouTube show Rip Through it.
“He made it very tough for me to enjoy the game and to enjoy the environment that I was in at the Carlton footy club, which evidently led to my delisting.”
Robinson said Malthouse could be suited to a position as a senior mentor to a younger coach, “but, in saying that, in all honesty, I believe he wouldn’t fit into today’s coaching roles because you have to have levels of communication and when he breaks players down he really struggles to bring them back up. That’s what I saw first-hand and through word of mouth.
“He has that tough love, he’s an old-school coach, he knows how to give you a spray, but ... (in) today’s game you’ve got to have all levels of communication and be able to talk to young players ... it’s more of a teaching background and I just don’t think he has that.”
Malthouse said on ABC Radio he would take a call from any of the three clubs — the Saints, Carlton and North — with coaching vacancies.
“I am a realist and I am only saying yes because I know it won’t happen,” Malthouse said.
“I feel like I am coaching (anyway). You could do a lot worse than sit there and take that pressure again ... We sit here in the commentary box and think, ‘can you add value to a club’ and it’s all I ask (myself).”
He found one backer in former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, who said on Wednesday that Malthouse was an “original Saint” who could return to the club where he started his VFL career as a player in 1972.
“Saints need someone strong who can drive breakthrough performance,” Thomas wrote on Twitter.
“They need a leader not a puppet.
“If he (Malthouse) was the best credentialed candidate currently available, I’d rather go with him than a rookie or unproven coach until a star becomes available.”

I'm not one who always agrees with GT, however I wouldn't dismiss his suggestion out of hand.
Everyone is judging Malthouse on his tenure at Carlton, whilst his record at The Bulldogs, West Coast and Collingwood is impressive and cannot be faulted. I'd prefer him to Scott that's for certain.
I think he's worth speaking to, doesn't mean I think he should get the job, but we could do worse than speak to him.

I've not liked Malthouse for not giving any credit to the IP received from Max & Ball for the 2010 season.
Collingwood could certainly attack and move the ball with efficiency but in 2009 they couldn't defend a beach ball from dribbling through the goals. Suddenly in 2010 they mirrored our defence.

To see Rooey get nullified by NJB, was like seeing Usain Bolt getting beaten by an Under-16 runner from Banyule High School.
Nick, the superb consummate athlete, who could run rings around any defender that wasn't Olympic-level athlete
