46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
Unbelievable!
We had the same number of inside 50’s but almost exactly double the score!!!
Shows the Lonie effect and fast direct movement inside 50 isolating Skunk and what that does.
One issue though is you won’t often crack the ton with that few inside 50’s.
Simply put, we were incredibly efficient up forward on Sunday.
We should get away with it against the Dees as they are batsyhte useless, but against the Crows we will need Stuv back to at least 80% output (I’m assuming he will play against the Dees but will be only 50% useful).

16 Goal Assists and 17 Marks Inside 50 though.
We went in with intent, rather than going in defensively.

Lonie played against Geelong
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Re: 46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
Been our issue for a couple of years really. Mid's do pretty well and we get our fair share of entries.
But over the journey most of those entries have been garbage and our forwards were pretty bland.
Same thing could happen next week. Entries could be poor and the opposition just set up from defence which the Dogs did pretty well yesterday. Or we could make the most of it and kick a decent score again.
Until we start doing it consistently, we wont be very competitive over a full season.

"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....

That quote is worthy of its own thread.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Mon 22 Jul 2019 9:11am 16 Goal Assists and 17 Marks Inside 50 though.

This imo is the main difference. Richo as a coach was too defensive in attack. Mr. Grogan is spot on.
Re: 46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
Nick Riewoldt said in the Foxtel commentary that the forwards seem to have been instructed to stay in the forward half. You would probably need to have been at the ground to see if there was any real difference but on the TV it seemed we have a more open game rather than the Under 10s Roaming Pack style I often endured watching under Richo. This instruction might also account for more productive inside 50 entries because we had actual forwards there to receive the ball, not an exhausting foot race after the ball as it comes in, or Lonie one on one against a bigger man or men.
If this is Ratten’s instruction, good on him and presumably it was one he would have suggested as an assistant but it was rejected by the former coach.

Re: 46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
Cho's 'we need to stay in the game' mindset was so costly.
The best way to 'stay in the game' is to kick goals.
Not clogging the game up and hoping you can hold the opposition to 70 points or less.
The 2nd quarter yesterday was a perfect example. The Dogs came at us, and were on top. Cho would have reverted to mega defence to ''stay in the game" - and we would have been flogged like we have all season when a team gets on a run.
But instead we fought fire with fire and 'stayed in the game' by kicking goals attacking.

Re: 46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
one of our guys took a safe mark inside 50, and a commentator mentioned that Bruce
had worked very hard to make a lead, and it wasn't honoured, and instead of giving up and recovering,
he ran around and drew his opponent away to create a large gap.
Under Richo, we were just doing the Auskick thing of getting numbers up there, but it ended up congested.
BTW, Ratten said in his presser that he stepped away from forwards coaching for the week and let the Skro
do that job and Skro "will keep the job now!" because we got 100+ for the first time this year
haha

Ross near square, kicking straight to JB on fwd flank,
JB slotted that early goal-
after ball left JB's boot, his leg looked relaxed, his action looked very smooth, like he
wasn't trying to steer it, he struck it perfectly.
How many times have we missed goals due to poor technique etc?
Belief and confidence goes a long long way

How do we rate the dogs defence? They like to run off and create, but can they defend?
All you have to do is match them in the middle and stop Bont and they are beatable

The defence of Geelong may have something to do with it.

Well, we’re carrying on like we just beat a top 4 side.
They have the same amount of wins as us, and have a crack midfield. What does that say about them at either end? They are putrid outside of the centre and HBFs

Imo I reckon he said that because he’s a good bloke and didn’t want to pot Richo.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 22 Jul 2019 4:53pm

As B.G mentioned above we went in with an attacking approach.
We were going in with intent to score. Not going in with a defensive mind set, setting up to defend and re-enter.
The line coaches have their areas and set ups but transition between zones and the general way we move the ball would at least in part have the head coaches fingerprints on it.
Otherwise a head coach is purely as good as his assistants. Which is part right, but they have general control over game plan and overall team ideals and rules.

I just don't agree with what I perceive his football philosophy to be.

Re: 46 inside 50’s vs Geelong AND Footscray!
You do realise we were the fastest ball moving team from 2016-2017, playing on the most from marks.
It was a style of play you cannot defend if you turn the ball over, you concede easy goals, so if you play a team that pressures well through the middle or beats you in clearance, you will be opened up defensively... and lose heavily. So whilst wins will look good, losses will look bad.
This year, with new assistants (who initially got credit for the change in game plan and victories it produced) we became a down the line, and gain territory and set up behind the ball team. Defence first, and limit the opposition.
We were happy with the new Game Plan when we were winning early in the year, but credited Ratten and Lade. Then when we were losing it was AR. Now we are back on board.
If we lose, what happens then?

Well, that will be because the players can't shake off the bad habits they got into under richo obviously!B.M wrote: ↑Mon 22 Jul 2019 8:32pm You do realise we were the fastest ball moving team from 2016-2017, playing on the most from marks.
