When Geary is fit...
...does he get back in?
With Coffield starting to find his way and a good kick, who gets that 6th defensive post?
Geary a better defender but enjoying Coffields disposal and development.

Re: When Geary is fit...
Please not Geary.
He can stay in the Zebs and be like an onfield coach for young guys like King, Bytel, etc
Liability, with his very very poor skills- we need to minimise turnovers so WHY
would he be welcome back?

so who does he replace?
every single backman we have, has far more skill and will not cause turnovers
Geary is the king of turnovers with his horrible skills

Re: When Geary is fit...
This is exactly the debate.
Good shutdown and smart leader with courage.
But his skills are ordinary.
The ability to hit up those difficult kicks from backline is of such high value, he might just struggle.
Savage, Clark, Wilkie and Coffield better users.

Re: When Geary is fit...
whoever is our coach next year,
I hope they only use Gears as depth and keep him in the Zebs
because being totally blind to his failings will just repeat the mistakes of AR
who valued 'effort' far more than skill and talent.
I don't care that the entire squad voted for Gears as captain, I think its a safety net
because during post game reviews, they can play the 'what about' game
in respect of their mistakes.
The squad need to be accountable and not accept mediocrity from anyone
as a bloody deflection from their own errors

Re: When Geary is fit...
We chose Clark and Coff for specific reasons. We need to get games into both and only drop these blokes when they need to be managed and rested.
You move Clark up the ground and he spends more time in the middle rotating with JB, Newnes and Sebby. Coff seems at home on the back flank for now, so I think you leave the kid in that position for the rest of this year.
Maybe Paton, Jimmy, Sav and Gears battling for spots in the backline and one of these is dropped depending on form and match ups.

Re: When Geary is fit...
If you want to see Geary's impact, take a look at the Brisbane game. If Geary plays, he goes to Charlie Cameron, as he has done for Betts before and most likely nullifies him.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 22 Jul 2019 1:46amso who does he replace?

That is not to say that job exists every week, but Geary has a very key role that no one else can play right now. McKenzie got torn up that day.

Re: When Geary is fit...
If anyone should be under the gun it should be Savage and not Geary. Thought Geary was excellent this year. His skills including his kicking weren’t an issue as far as I could see.
BUT:
We need a new direction. We need to develop the new brigade and get them to 50 games ASAP so that is the dilemma facing a new coach. Hopefully he won’t be weighed down by what’s been done in the past.

His disposal is not nearly as bad as you believe it is..in the last 18 months his disposal efficiency is above the league average
However you still hang your argument on listening to the argument of the sheep who can’t actually see what is going on
Yes Paton Coffield show great promise and are definitely the future but as another poster said put them in against a good attack and then let’s see where they sit
As it was the mid size dog forwards killed our defence

Re: When Geary is fit...
Gears kicks mostly sideways or backwards, sometimes ling down the line . Struggles to spot up the diffi ult pass into the corridor.
Coffield given more time can be that player.
It gives so much rebound pressure to turn defence straight into attack rather than allow teams to set up while we chip it around.
Teams always back off Geary at kickouts hoping he gets it in the back pocket knowing he can only go down the line.

Geary gets dropped when there are 22 more skilled players who play with the same or more ferocity.
Players on cruise control need to be dropped first.

Re: When Geary is fit...
That's true. And also - C Ryioli has always openly stated the Geary was consistently his most difficult opponent. I'm no great Geary fan but he is an amazing shut down player on small forwards.shrodes wrote: ↑Mon 22 Jul 2019 8:24amIf you want to see Geary's impact, take a look at the Brisbane game. Having said that - the way our putrid midfield - led by (stand-in) Captain rudderless Ross 'performed' against the Brions - 10 Gearys wouldn't have been able to stop Cameron.

Re: When Geary is fit...
He will walk straight back into the side.
He is one of the premier shut down defenders in the game, and none of the others can claim even close to that.
He will take Paton’s spot.

Re: When Geary is fit...
The season Geary is not in our best 22 we will be a genuine finals team. He's done a fantastic job taking the poisoned chalice that is replacing Roo as skipper. Much admired and the hardest of trainers.
If we've got 22 who deserve a place in front of him then St Kilda is on the right track.
