Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
There may have been a few greater players play at the Saints
But he is easily the greatest saint.
383 games of sustained excellence over three decades
At the peak of his career he won the aflpa (Leigh Matthews) trophy ahead of Wayne Carey, Michael Voss, James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Chris Grant, Darren Jarman, Tony Lockett, Tony Modra amongst others.
He was all Australian 8 times, including 7 in a row as a starting midfielder.
More possessions than any saint, and barely missed a target.
Greatest players to play at StK (Talent and match winning ability at their best) - Post WW2
Baldock, Lockett, Stewart, Harvey, Winmar, Reiwoldt, Hayes, Loewe, Burke, Barker,
However,
Greatest Saints (players instrumental in the most amount of victories)
Harvey, Lockett, Reiwoldt, Hayes, Baldock, Stewart, Winmar, Burke, R.Smith, Loewe

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
Apart from being one of our greatest Saints it has already been documented his commitment to achieving his ultimate goals.
His work ethic is unquestionable ..... the man is a football legend in so many ways. Has been apprentice at a high flying (albeit the Skunks.) club.
Taking this into account ... yep..give him a crack.

This is an amazing watch.
The stuff from the Brownlows was a bonus.
How good was he. Just how good was he.

With the passage of time you forget just how quick his first few meters were when clearing congestion......the agility...evading,,,,outstanding
power runner........who ran and ran and ran
and the dinky pass.....
He was a true champion....

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
That’s what I noticed too. Had forgotten just how quick he was in traffic. Able to create space where there was none. Soooooo elusive and sure footed at the same time. And in the midst of being elusive able to execute pinpoint delivery. Extraordinary footballer.

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
Nope.
The other players mentioned had more distinguished careers, more accolades, and most didn’t leave StK.
Carl was an influential ruckman
But 9th and 10th on my list
Smith: Brownlow medallist, Rover in the TOTC, Captain, b&f, premiership player, multiple Vic Rep
Loewe: games record holder at one point 321, Captain, B&F, Vic Rep, A.A, EJ Whitten Medal, 3rd most marks in AFL History.

Many thanks for this, Jaxons - wonderful! That Robert Harvey kid will never make it - too slow and can't kick long.

Agree bigred, loved every minute of it.
He was the best Saint ever.
Lockett the best player I ever saw at St.Kilda, Harvey my favourite Saint of all time,

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
Loved it.
At 1:28 he does his knee against Freo entirely because the umpire took an eternity to blow his whistle as Harves tried to maintain his feet as several Freo players tried to wrestle him to the ground.
Cost him membership of the 400 club.
Just love watching his thighs and hips as he bamboozles opponents.
Those little shimmies lets him "stroll" past opponents at will.
I loved that David Parkin quote "Our guys couldn't have laid a tackle on him even if we played the game in a phone box".

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
A friendly Darrel Baldock informed me at Princes Park 30 years ago, that Harvey would win a Brownlow medal one day.
Within nine years or so he had won two Brownlows!
Thanks Jaxons for posting.

Harves was brilliant. We only see flashes of this in JB and Gresh. Depressing
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

Re: Robert Harvey Career Highlights
That two steps acceleration to top speed. The change of direction. Half the time he's just waiting until the opponent barely commits to going one way and he's off.
Some of the blasts through traffic though. One of two when he is actually on the ground and just gets up and runs through three or four.
Incredible balance really. And when he's indecisive his feet don't stop moving.
Some of his kicks to lead are unreal.
What a player he was.
