I hope the "new coach" reads this stuff before the Trade/Draft period starts.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Surplus?
We get slaughtered in hitouts, hitouts to advantage and clearances every week.
Aside from Marshall, we have Longer.
Where's the surplus??

I get that Marshall and Goldy May essentially be competing for the same spot but Goldy is immediately better than all our other depth.
Our ruck stocks go immediately from having 1 that can play to two AFL caliber rucks.
And Goldy comes FA.
The problem with Draper is that he is all of expensive, injured and unproven
Quite literally when the problem is managing game time or top 22 balance, I see very little problems.
The reality is we need actual talent and depth... not more risky potential

Jealousy...one of man's greatest weaknesses.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
reckon I can throw in one more to the list
Warren wow Jones
Came to us at 33 from carlton and played for 3 years
For a while there Carlton players treated St Kilda as their retirement fund top up

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
Bruce and Marshall as key forwards
Goldy rucks 70% of game
Membrey as third tall, and moves to FF when Marshall relieves Goldy in ruck.

Don’t mind this either... gives King an opportunity to develop at his own pace without the pressure of becoming our great white hope next year.
Not a popular opinion round here though

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
We're trying to prize North's only decent ruck from them, they have a salary cap equal to us and upping their offer to Goldy weekly...its going to cost us a bloody fortune. Can see some benefits, but not if it costs us.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 13 Jul 2019 12:06pm Draper is preferable but Goldy could also be recruited. He would cost nothing.

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
If you watched Marshall tonight IMO it rubber stamped why we HAVE to just keep playing him in the No1 ruck.
The guy is clearly thriving and revelling in the role and is improving at an astonishing rate.
He thrives on the contest. Now is not the time to limit that development by having him play second fiddle.
Just give him more practice at tapping the ball against good ruck opponents and watch that aspect of his game improve too.
Rare it is to be this excited about a St Kilda Ruck. Everitt and Gardi when fit are the two that excited me in my time of watching.
Ghost was really before my time (well I saw him, but his best years were when I was a young boy), but I think Marshall must be generating similar excitement in the St Kilda fans who watch him at his best.

Getting Goldy doesn’t detract from that unless we let it... it means however that our depth had improved 1000%

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
Why do you need two number 1 ruckmen?
Unless Marshall plays forward (mistake) they cannot play in the same team?! Even if they do, do you want Marshall on the pine more than now? I don’t!
Marshall is our best prospect since Jack Steven imo, why would you take him away from the position he’s flourishing in??

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
...and WHY after another 36 HO, 19 disposal, 9 clearance game last night, wouldn’t you be chasing Reilly O’Brien from the Crows, if you were serious about bringing genuine talent into the list?
He’s easily the equal, if not a whole heap better, than the Norf bloke, he’s young, I think he’s a Victorian, AND he’s out of contract...
This club continues to put the bum into bumbling!

Would we be a better team with another really good ruckman in the team?B.M wrote: ↑Sun 14 Jul 2019 2:54am Why do you need two number 1 ruckmen?

Yes.
Lade stated that his midfield sets up defensively because statistically Marshall some of the lowest Hitouts to Advantage numbers in the comp.
It would be an enormous improvement to us to get in a star ruckman to work with Marshall.
I certainly agree that we don't want to stifle Marshall's development, but I don't think it has to. I think it would improve it if managed well.

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
We need another fairly developed and talented tall to play forward - in this respect you can rule out King ( and likely Paddy) so that leaves us with Marshall
Bottom line is we need another tall whether that is a forward or ruck it needs to be sorted for team structure and balance

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
If we take Marshall out of the ruck, or even minutes off him as a ruckman, I will f***ing lose it.
We need him to get to a 50 game RUCKMAN as soon as possible
In 2021 he will be our best player

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
So Barry, you’d take Marshall out of the Ruck, a position he’ll win the b&f in and put a 32yo Goldstein?
Goldstein comes, he plays two unless Marshall is Injured
Next year we need to get games into King, as he like Marshall needs to get to 50asap

You pick up a back up ruck, or another developing ruck.
Goldie is not going to join us to only play when Marshall cannot.

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
Perhaps they are looking at the following:
Goldy comes in and shares duties forward with Marshall for next 2 years . Bruce second bug and membrey plays as 3rd tall which is what he should be based on size and strength.
End of 2 years King ready to come in and plays 80/20 forward ruck, Goldy in 2's or retired and Marshall top 5 rucks in comp being 80/20 ruck.
No more Acres in the ruck means we compete at every bounce.

Re: Still chasing Goldy according to Heraldsun
No matter how good Goldstein or Draper are, there is no point! We've got Marshall.
We need to know who's coaching and how they may want to structure up, before deciding we're going to play two ruckman rotating through the forward line. What would we do with Membrey, Bruce, posssibly McCartin or Battle and of course King?
Sure we need Ruck depth and cover, but I doubt Goldstein or Draper are looking for a back up role. Draper will soon be Essendon's No.1. Best to recruit a ruckman at low cost as back up and keep Longer or Pierce for another year.
