Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
If he gets to 2017 stats, I’d be ok with that. They were better than all our Mids bar Steven and Ross, and he’s a better user than Ross and possibly Steven.
His 2015-16 numbers were worth over a million
700+ possessions and 20+ Brownlow votes both seasons and the AFL Coaches award
He did get a 4 year deal, with an option for a 5th with triggers
So that makes his ages 28/29/30/31 and maybe 32
We have NO real quality on the list, so to get someone in the door that is a triple all Australian (even a bit diminished in his output) is worth it IMO. I mean, what else are we spending our money on? No one else wanted to come, and we have a poor list.
Pick 39 is hit or miss
DH is at the very least a GOP at best a quality mid

I am not a DH proponent. You can be a DH fan based on his history, but I usually back my eyes when I see a player struggling over an extended duration. Muscle atrophy might be irreversible and I thought we were battling the laws of nature when we signed him on last year
Anyhow...if DH gets 800K, then Marshall gets same, Stuv gets $1m, Fyfe gets $2m and Dusty sends us bankrupt

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
Dan Hannebury has played two games coming back from injury (every AFL player gets injured, except Boomer)
Had 50 disposals and looked a class above our mids around the footy.
When you have a CV that reads like his, your gonna get paid

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
But B.M., is looking a class above our midfield reason to be paid that amount?
Agree, his CV dictates the salary and contract Sydney had him on which was dictated by his body of work for them. They didn't want him and saw off loading him as a panacea to their salary cap squeeze.
I do not know any other club that would have made that deal. Someone was desperate to make a deal. The deal made could have been, should have been a lot better for St Kilda.

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
Sydney received a second-round draft selection (No.39 at time of trade) and StKilda's 2019 second-round draft selection (Looking to be around the lows 20's now)
St Kilda received Dan Hannebery and a second-round draft selection (No.28 overall at time of trade)
St Kilda then swapped that pick from the Swans for two picks which ended up being Bytel and Parker.
So effectively St Kilda gave up Hickey (39) and our 2019 second rounder for Hannas, Bytel and Parker.
How much value we gain I think will mainly be determined by how good Bytel becomes.
This year is pretty much a write off. I think we are all hoping that Hannas will be reasonably fit in 2020 and playing along side Bytel in our midfield together with Steele, our No 3-5 pick and a mentally refreshed Steven. One can daydream anyway.

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
No problem recruiting Hannebery just question the tenure.
Could his money cause us an issue in 3-4 years time if he cannot get back on the park.
Will that cost us retaining a player or recruiting a player in 2022?
Also BM, where do you get the information that we have $1M we are not spending?

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
We had 1.4 to spend on Sheil last year (after taking DH) and didn’t do so. It was well documented that we had a war chest, and did not use it. I’m guessing Billings and Gresh got a nice pay rise for next year.
That being said, McCartin, Armitage, Longer and probably Roberto & Steven will be off our books.
We will have closer to 2 million of cap space. If Jack leaves, even more.

We won’t have anyone to pay by the end of the year...
Good time to be a St Kilda player if finals isn’t your go. Everyone would be getting above market.

Collingwood with all their resources knew that Freeman was finished.

Why do we take the difficult high risk path?
Like using a number one pick on a diabetic.
Our recruiting is littered with high risk and inept decisions.
Why?
Time for this bulls*** to stop.
I mean, for heaven's sake our first two picks in last years draft were on injured kids.

To be fair it’s all part of the plan, he’s tracking great, it’s perfectly normal to have a 2 game rest after only playing 2 AFL matches...

Has he got muscle atrophy because I swear it seems to me like he looks skinnier in the thighs
If he has been diagnosed with this due to the periods where he's had injuries, I wonder what the causes were?

It is called desperation.
Recruiters and coaches looking over their shoulder seeing the axe coming.
They think their only chance is to score a hail mary selection that will make them appear to be genius and save their job.
Does Alan Richardson care about player development, no way, he needs miracle wins if he is to save his job.
Did Beveridge or Trout recruit for players who will come good in 5 years time well after they get sacked.
Bad coaches and bad recruiters get themselves into a hole through incompetence and then dig that hole even deeper trying to escape.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

We effectively recruited a three-legged dog. Yes, a very skilful three-legged dog, but when it comes to winning premierships, three-legged dogs are as useful as tits on a bull. Thanks a bunch, Simon Lethlean!!

But as a recruiter he has done us no favours.
I just hope he has minimum involvement in the choice of our next coach!

I don't understand some supporters.
We desperately needed experience right?
We desperately needed premiership experience right?
We desperately needed football leadership right?
We desperately need to improve our list right?
We desperately need to improve our midfield right?
We desperately needed to land a big name right?
We have shitloads in the salary cap right?
Hannebury was absolutely ideal. Would rather Fyfe or Kelly obviously, but Hannebury is still ideal.
Not doubting we're not getting as much as we'd have liked on-field in year 1 - but that doesn't detract from the actual decision to recruit him.

Totally agree. We needed an expierenced champion of the game to help in many areas, not just on field. His body is getting there and when he plays...he is bloody good and all class.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Sat 13 Jul 2019 2:34pm I don't understand some supporters.

Roughie covers all those bases and can go thru the middle, and I’m sure if we offer him $800k he’d play for us next year, but that would be a ludicrous decision.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Sat 13 Jul 2019 2:34pm I don't understand some supporters.

Hannerbry should have been offered something like $500-600k for three years, with heavy performance based criteria.
No one else wanted him, it is bizarre he was offered so much for so long.

Re: Hannebury Hamstring Awareness & Lethlean
Agree The_Dud, it is the terms and the amount that's baffling. Sydney should be paying part of his salary but instead we not only help them with their salary cap issue, we help them with draft picks for father / son & Academy selections / bids.
Hannerbury may be good and better than our current mids but he's not the 2015-16 version and won't be again.
Yes BG, we want all that (the premiership experience is neither here or there) but we also don't need to settle for what's left & who no one else wanted & then pay overs for the privilege.
