My beef with the club
In many ways, this current administration have been great. (and credit should be given where it's due) The new facility at RSEA Park Moorabbin has been a game changer as far as getting supporters involved with and included in, being part of a "Saints Family" The club have done a lot of good things off-field, admin-wise and my complaints are not with them per-se. My beef is with the current FOOTBALL department and the continuing poor onfield performances which have their causes in recruiting and planning.

Re: My beef with the club
Injuries to key experienced players haven't helped
But what is inexcusable is the commitment of players at the ball yesterday in that 1st quarter - you could see North players were 100% committed to the contest I mean Jy Simpkin listed as 75kg was hungry for the ball and when he did get it just burst through our pathetic tackles - dude should have been poleaxed into the dirt - that said our mids seem to worried about what the opposition mid is going to do at clearances rather than worrying about winning the ball themselves
Coaches need to sort this crap out or the football department need to draft/trade for mids that can win the ball not reactive outside seagulls
Also our desperation to smother some opposition kicks is absolutely non-existant - which should be a full blooded attempt to smother is often superceded by a half-hearted bump
And don't get me going about 3 or 4 of our guys flying to spoil a mark with no one on the ground to mop up the spilt ball - also watching Carlisle's limp fisted spoiling attempts compared to McGoverns hard as diamond fist makes me want to spew up

Jy Simpkin is a very talented player.
Moorabbin move has been such a game changer, we have gone from bad to worse.

"Did anyone expect us to play finals this year?"
"Will we beat Geelong this week with a new coach?"
And now the above.
Your views are very short sighted.

Re: My beef with the club
My point about moving back to Moorabbin being a "game changer" was confined to off-field matters mainly. With a change of Coaching the facility CAN be a great asset! Time will tell.

Meanwhile, in that period we traded in Roberton, Bruce, Longer, Hickey, Brown, Carlisle, Hannebery, Austin, Savage, Steele, Membrey
That list tells you exactly why and where we are, especially when we consider that 2009 and 2010 only netted us Jamie Cripps, who was then let go to WC for peanuts. In 2008 we picked up Tom Lynch and Rhys Stanley, who were subsequently let go

2009, 2010, 2012 were disasters. Those three years in particular have cost us dearly. Just picking up one good player in each of those three drafts would make a huge difference to us now

Re: My beef with the club
Sure very skillful however his desire to win the ball was what stood out to me.
It horribly showed up our players desperation and lack of commitment at the contest.
You have to want to own the contest and win the ball at all costs - its not only a physical commitment but more so a mental one and to often lately we have mentally arrived too late or cannot sustain our willingness to compete.
Our centre clearance work is abysmal which continually piles pressure on our backs as they know 75% of the time the ball will be coming their way from a centre restart

Re: My beef with the club
What I’m saying is, the move to Moorabbin, whilst important in some ways will make little on field impact. They still train on grass (which at Moorabbin is pretty ordinary) the still have a set of goals at either end and a fence around the ground, the footies are the same shape, the weights room has well, weights (which were brought from Seaford)
Although, Southland is close by, and all the other great cafes in the Moorabbin area.
It is our spiritual home, but reality is that it’s NOT our home ground.

I have observed that our mids are able to get their hands on the ball FIRST more often than not despite a losing ruck.
But they are immediately under pressure /tackled, so handball
repeatedly under pressure /tackled, handball repeatedly (up to 10 possessions)
until after a number of inside hand passes, all being tackled, the ball spills to the outside where the opposition gathers the ball, avoid our mids tackles and sweep forward.
Our mids win the ball FIRST, but so often lose the clearance.

Re: My beef with the club
Big call to say a footballer is not putting in?
I’d argue that every player on the field was having a go, Zeiball and Cunnington are contested ball beasts, Simpkin is a first rounder and is very skilled.
Some days you try hard, run hard and chase hard, but the ball just doesn’t fall your way or your opponent (who is also trying) outplays you.
At that level, rarely could you identify someone as not trying.
Not thinking, yes
Not executing, yes
Being outplayed, yes
But I would say if not all, then most are giving their best effort.
I’ve actually spoken to my son about trying too hard at times, running too hard to the wrong spots and losing shape. It’s great to have desire and work hard but Sometimes you need composure, you need to be smart on the field.
Look at the difference between NDS and Jack Steven. NDS, never looked hurried, always picked the right option and executed. But sometimes looked lazy. Jack, a gun player, plays the game at a million miles an hour and seriously breaks lines, but hurries his decision making and struggles to execute at the extreme pace he plays.

Re: My beef with the club
Four takeaways for me from yesterday. Number 1, goldy comprehensively toweling up Roma in the first quarter both around the ground and at clearances. At stoppages north usually had a plus 2 and goldy gave them an armchair ride. That was a coaching set up issue.ace wrote: ↑Mon 08 Jul 2019 9:37pmI know nothing about AFL coaching BUTDevilhead wrote: ↑Mon 08 Jul 2019 9:12pmSure very skillful however his desire to win the ball was what stood out to me.

Second issue was the lack of intensity by our mids and weak tackling. In the first
Third issue was some very unfortunate free kicks.
Fourth issue was an undersized backline after losing Battle.
Forget any stats after quarter time. It's about what happens when the heat is on.
I still think we play 1 tall short, most noticable yesterday against a tall north
I think we went in with the wrong setup and it took us a 1/4 to get organized.

Re: My beef with the club
The plus two was created by AR folding back a wingman (Ross) after the centre bounce following the injury to Battle. This was probably to support an undersized and inexperienced defense. And try to stop the bleeding. Did not work. Wrong player.
The spare wingman for North sat off every mid stoppage and was an ‘extra’ that wasn’t rounded up by the HF Sinclair or Acres. The reason AR did not even up the number, he wanted even numbers in front of the footy because Bruce was dangerous one out.
If AR sent a fwd to stoppage, to even number up, the defender would have sagged and double teamed Bruce.
Having a loose at stoppage or through the middle always makes it look like mids are being outworked, but reality is that there is an outnumber.

Re: My beef with the club
Yep, agree. The problem with a plus 1 at stoppages is that in this case, goldy, just kept palming the ball down thier throats and they kept charging into th 50 with minimal pressure. They just kicked long to with confidence as we were undersized.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 08 Jul 2019 10:20pm The plus two was created by AR folding back a wingman (Ross) after the centre bounce following the injury to Battle. I suspect the players were trying to think through structural issues rather than focus on the ball

Agreed. We were smashed through the middle anyway, giving them a spare made it worse, nigh on impossible to win the footy between the arcs.
