Rowan Marshall #1 ranked player in AFL since rnd 11
Just mentioned on On The Couch, Rowan Marshall is the number 1 ranked player in the AFL since round 11. What an absolute star. He doesn't fumble, puts in a great effort every week.

The Saints will now certainly trade him and look for a rejected ruckman elsewhere.

I was thinking that more likely his natural attributes and instincts would be coached out of him, like so many of our other young prospects over the last 6 seasons.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Mon 01 Jul 2019 10:49pm The Saints will now certainly trade him and look for a rejected ruckman elsewhere.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Could be our most exciting ruck prospect since Gardiner.

Lucky for us injuries gave Richo no choice but to actually play him this year...

Classic example of a very positive story and post getting derailed with utter BS.
Next thing you know Richo will crop up about something he apparently did wrong regarding Marshall...oh wait.
Next in line...Jack Newnes.

I don't believe it's a coincidence that Marshall and Billings are having good years, at the same time some experienced coaches arrived.
I think the same will apply to Clark.

Imagine if a new coach came in with fresh eyes and tried some stale players in new roles or harnessed someone running around in the 2s better and we get some more Marshall-like results?
Richo has be shown to be extremely stubborn, so this is one of the positives I’m looking forward to when he finally goes.

He was behind both Hickey and Longer and was neck and neck with Pierce at the end of last season.
Pierce was first choice in rd1 and fortunately for us Longer got hurt otherwise it may have been 10-12 rounds before Marshall got a go.

Richo selected Pierce in round 1 ahead of Marshall.
Mind boggling.
Marshall would not have got a chance in the ruck if Longer was fit.. .Longer would have just kept getting selected, with Marshall given the odd game up forward

But wait.....Billy is so "strong at the contest". We have to get him back in the team. Those three or four possessions per game are like gold.

Of course he is, the threads saying he’s effectively been the best player in the afl for the about a third of the season.
A b&f at the club isn’t much chop when so close to the bottom of the ladder.

Re: Rowan Marshall #1 ranked player in AFL since rnd 11
Yes, the game has changed, there is now less emphasis on winning the hit outs and more about mobility and impact around the ground. That doesn't suit Billy,
whose strength is in the actual ruck battles, but I still place value on him. Would have been handy when the opposition has a couple of big rucks, ie Brisbane.
However, it does seem his card is marked. Does anyone know his status? Also Pierce? Both still having concussion symptoms?
Marshall is ideal for the modern ruckman (or ruck rover), but imo will never give us a clear, consistent advantage in the hitouts. May not matter.

Re: Rowan Marshall #1 ranked player in AFL since rnd 11
Best player for his last 4 matches which is closer to 20% rather than 33.
Anyway, that small sample is a disservice to Marshall who has been very good all year, meaning he is leading the B&F IMO.
Regardless of the year the club has had, Marshall has come off the rookie list, is still very young & has been plonked into the most combative position on the field. Plenty of chop.

Re: Rowan Marshall #1 ranked player in AFL since rnd 11
He (Marshall) needs another tall player to help out around the ground. What we lack is another tall to contest when we frequently bomb the ball out of defence. Note the Lions game, Martin and Oscar had a very good second half, with Marshall under pressure competing with them. We look slow and disorganised when chipping the ball around and end up coughing the pill up. Marshall can't be expected to carry the rucking duties for four quarters. We send Bruce or Acres into the ruck and lose our only tall forward as a consequence and Bruce isn't a ruck mans boot lace. Marshall has performed very well considering he is one out against our higher ranked opponents.

Marshall had barely played for us before this year. In a twist of fate, Hickey going and Longer and Pearce being injured thrust Marshall into the no 1 role. Thank god in some ways as we now have a no 1 ruck that will be as good as anyone in the comp!!

Marshall was third in line at the start of the year because based on form before that, he WAS third in line.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Tue 02 Jul 2019 11:12amOh please, give the Richo nonsense stuff up. Exactly and he was a kid that had barely played. He was seen by everyone as more of a forward/ruck and a decent long term prospect. Thank god he stepped up. We have found a new no 1.takeaway wrote: ↑Tue 02 Jul 2019 11:19amMarshall was third in line at the start of the year because based on form before that, he WAS third in line.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Tue 02 Jul 2019 11:12amOh please, give the Richo nonsense stuff up. Perhaps why we are looking at Goldstein or Draper, if indeed those rumours are true.scallopsroe wrote: ↑Tue 02 Jul 2019 10:28am He (Marshall) needs another tall player to help out around the ground.
