Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
Travesty he left. If it was now we would get several #1 picks for him. One of a hundred or so reasons I despise sanctimonious Hawthorn. Did you see its captain pinching Cameron. What class.

Not a bad player Joel Smith. Think a knee ruined his career a bit.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
Think Osborne fell over him about 4 weeks before 1997 finals. With a year out and out of contract, Hawthorn cut our grass. One of around 15 reasons we lost 1997 Grand Final.

Man he could play.

Was never as good after the knee, but I think still got AA with Hawthorn as a defender.

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
If I remember correctly we offered him stuff all because the injury would keep him out a season.
Hawks offered him heaps with multiple years.
We said goodbye and got nothing. Well, I don’t remember getting anything myself.
We are not very good at decision making sometimes.

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
Horrific injury.
Hawks played him across HB and was virtually a different player.
Sublime finishing skills. Imagine him playing at Marvel.
No comparison to what we have to put up with today. Makes you wonder.

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
His injury was the start of a run of 4 significant injuries that cost us the 97 flag, Joel was immense for us. He was the classy ball user off half back with Matty Young. Glided across the turf and could kick both feet beautifully and was the conduit between high defence and attack. Him, Young and Aussie Jones just slotted Buckets and Heater all year.
Smith went down. Lazar on a wet a Sunday night in the last round against PA; then Spida in the QF against Bris; Matty Young late in the PF.

That first game on the highlights reel against Caaaaarlton was a spectacular come from behind win featuring 3 kids with very ordinary names ...
Smith, Jones and Brown.
Ordinary names, but their emergence was a precursor to our subsequent rise in 97.

I remember the injury was likened by the surgeons to something they would expect to see in a car crash
Exactly why did we lose him / couldn't keep him?

Didn't play HB for us in 97 as far as I remember.Saintmatt wrote: ↑Tue 04 Jun 2019 11:57pmHis injury was the start of a run of 4 significant injuries that cost us the 97 flag, Joel was immense for us. Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
We lost him in the pre-season draft of 1998. He went pick 2 to Hawthorn and Jamie Shanahan went pick 1 to Melbourne.
Two more than handy players that we lost for nothing.
Shanahan was a good full back but was embarrassed by Jarman in the GF. He should never have played on him. He paid for Alves' mistakes in the GF.
Smith should never have been allowed to leave. It's quintessential St Kilda that allowed him to go.

That was a midweek Ansett Cup game.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Wed 05 Jun 2019 1:34am That first game on the highlights reel against Caaaaarlton was a spectacular come from behind win featuring 3 kids with very ordinary names ...

I was playing basketball at Albert Park that night against a team representing Ajax. Only one player turned up from the opposition. It seems all the rest had gone to Waverley.
We had the option to play a scratch match or get a refund and go home. We had a couple of Saints fans too so we chose the latter option. We were about 7 goals down when I got home but it was all good news from there.

The game Enrico referred to was '95. In '96 we beat Carlton in the final.

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
An extraordinary talent cut down at the G in 1997 nearing finals and his loss was significant alongside Everitt & Vidovic.
You dont get given the #4 for nothing...his class, composure, finishing skills and agility were amazing he would have been a club great...
Sadly that was the last time he played for us went to Hawks after sitting out 1998 and ended up a B& F and AA selection if i recall as a half back.
Absolutely loved this guy he sits in the what could have been category along with John Peter Budge and Rod Owen for me....

Re: Joel Smith St.Kilda Career
He absolutely did at times - mainly at half-forward but also, at half back. He actually felt more comfortable there and it was his suggestion to the Hawks to play him there when he came back from the knee.. He was actually playing at half back (on Richard Osborne) the day the knee happened.SaintPav wrote: ↑Wed 05 Jun 2019 9:02amDidn't play HB for us in 97 as far as I remember.Saintmatt wrote: ↑Tue 04 Jun 2019 11:57pmHis injury was the start of a run of 4 significant injuries that cost us the 97 flag, Joel was immense for us. Didn't the injury happen in the St Kilda forward pocket in our forward line?Saintmatt wrote: ↑Wed 05 Jun 2019 4:43pmHe absolutely did at times - mainly at half-forward but also, at half back. If you watch the last couple of minutes he seems to be playing forward, but the injury happens in Collingwood’s forward line.SaintPav wrote: ↑Wed 05 Jun 2019 5:22pmDidn't the injury happen in the St Kilda forward pocket in our forward line?Saintmatt wrote: ↑Wed 05 Jun 2019 4:43pmHe absolutely did at times - mainly at half-forward but also, at half back.
