Yes okay just because other clubs ‘rated them’ doesn’t mean it’s not a punt.. want me to go over it:
- King and Bytel.. both coming off serious injuries..
- trading our second rounders for Hannas and Freeman
- pick 1 - Paddy was a punt (diabetes and medical issues, as well as the knock his fitness is a long way off)
- trading pick 5 for carlisle and Pick 17 was a punt (sat out a year) but like this one don’t get me wrong

Wrong on all counts.

King easily the best talent in last years draft had to be taken. Bytel was rated in the top ten so to take a punt with a late pick is 100% correct. Paddy was the correct call at the time no one could have predicted his head knocks.

The last one with us getting Carlisle and Gresham for pick 5 was some of the best trading you'll see.

100% correct - seeing as we were actually going to spend 5 on Gresham - and you can see why - essentially the trade that got us Carlisle cost very little.

King was only a question if he did not get on the park, as we (as supporters) have become gun shy about taking injured players (re Freeman and Simpson(?)) THe future here looks great - Bytel less of a risk - but had to be done.

Add in the Mature Age recruits we have picked up - Recent recruiting has been fantastic.

A Josh was not going to cut it - it needed to be a Jack!

Also seems that everyone was thinking the same as the top 3 were all mids.

Looks like a really well.planned return from 2 years of injury for mine.
Profile indicates a hugely talented junior athlete and footballer who will develop rapidly over the next 2 years through the VFL and AFL. This seems like a perfectly logical rookie selection to me.

"8. ST KILDA: Jack Mayo (Subiaco)

192cm, 81kg, 19 years

A developing key position forward, Mayo’s biggest strengths are his marking ability and his long left boot. He still needs to put on some size, at just 81kg, so is likely to be a development player."

Actually looking back, our much maligned recruiting has proven to be very good. It seems our player development might have been a problem that has been fixed this year.
Also, we dont need any more mids perse',
We need two elite FA's mids

Obviously I will get behind him but another broken young player??? Good news is that it is a cheap punt but I expect little from him so I cant really be disappointed.

I guess my surprise was in the essence of a mid year draft....to select a ready to play recruit.

Mayo seems to be a decent rookie that could develop after a few years and 10 kilos....so why take him now? Couldn't we find a ready made senior forward out of the 370 players nominated? I can list a few that add value but not longevity.

I watched the Subiaco Colts GF last night. Mayo reminds me of a tall skinny forward from WA player who was initially drafted by Nth Melbourne played a few games and was then picked up by Geelong but didnt last long - I cant remember his name. But the thing that was similiar to Mayo is that he too always looked like he was going to break in half at the knees.

Mayo has missed a couple of years with knee injuries and was playing with his knee heavily strapped in the GF. He lacked agility and he is another tall whom struggled when the ball was on the ground. He rucked in the forward line but wouldnt say he was a natural or had a huge leap. His straight line speed, leading patterns and footy smarts looked good. My worry is his core strength looks really fragile, so hopefully the club have done their home work and believe they can build him up.

I also noted the club had him measuring 194cms tall, so he has grown since last years draft camp. Perhaps he still has some more growing to do.

Think you are referring to Aaron Black (North & Cats player) who I think also nominated for this mid season rookie draft

He's been back from injury for one and a half seasons, at what point does he cease to be 'broken'? Not a bad pickup, not going to fix our need for outside pace, but at pick #8 there wasn't much chance of that.

Yes, that's exactly what I thought: surely our need is for a ready made player? The kid looks like a great project player for a couple of years time, but aren't we sorely missing players right now?

You must have missed the half volley pick up on his toes at pace and the 2 or 3 loose balls he gathered and swung around onto his left. Looked pretty good to me without being too outstanding. But with 2 years out and a long run return into a grand final he may have been a bit blown. Leading 3rd tall half forward might be pretty handy considering our pressure game andcrun of half back.

Once again the AFL have not thought this through. Their intent was to allow clubs to pluck ready made players that could potentially plug an immediate gap in their list caused by a long term injury. Highly unlikely any 19 year olds in the WAFL, VFL or SANFL are going to fill that void. This draft should have had a minimum age of 21 imho.

Weve exploited a loophole and got a kid that wont be even close to AFL standard this year - but may have been on a number of clubs radars for the next draft if he strung together a few solid games in the WAFL later this year.

Hopefully we've pinched one here . Who knows, he could still be developing and we may have another Rowan Marshall type story in a couple of years from now.
