Unpopular Opinion
Bruce just isn't that good.
Outside of a few spectacular grabs and that 50 goal season (which I will get to shortly) he is severely overrated on here.
- He isn't overly quick
- Far from a reliable set shot
- A relatively poor contested mark (outside of the few hangers that he's taken)
We've all heard the excuse for him
- Dealing with terrible delivery.
- Forced to play as second ruck.
- Takes the best forward every week.
Good forwards have the ability to make poor delivery look good.
The year he kicked 50 goals is the most overhyped season from a forward on here in a long time. He was consistent but far from outstanding.
- He kicked 3+ six times
- Kicked two bags of 5 against the Dons and 6 against the Suns (Dons finished 15th, Suns finished 16th)
- Riewoldt took the best defender each week
Since that 2015 season he has kicked
2016 - 38 from 22 games and
2017 - 36 from 20 games
2018 - Ruined by injury... but lets not forget that he was looking at getting dropped before being injured.
Compared to the other key forwards in the comp, he is a long, long, long way down the list.
The fact that we're still relying on him to be our number #1 big forward isn't great.

I anticipate Battle and King will take 2 of the posts going forward. I don’t know where that will leave Bruce?The_President wrote: ↑Sat 04 May 2019 5:55pm Bruce just isn't that good.

Re: Unpopular Opinion
The year he kicked the 50 goals he had a brilliant first half of the season, and fell away in the second half. So he didn't even have one full season at his peak.

Re: Unpopular Opinion
Probably not that unpopular.
Why we havnt played a Longer / Marshall combo to give some support up forward is beyond me. Two terrible games where intercept marks have dominated us.
Even putting Battle up there. No changes happen and unfortunately teams have now worked out our boring style.

Great point LL. Battle dominated the juniors as a forward and has that real forward swagger about him,
Never really got an extended crack as a forward...
Not sure why Richo doesn’t look to change things up on days like today and swap Battle and Bruce. Bruce has three touches at 3QT.

Give him an injection of aggression. Play him down back and tell him hit the ball hard, or drop him!!Linton Lodger wrote: ↑Sat 04 May 2019 6:10pmI anticipate Battle and King will take 2 of the posts going forward. I understand that they came out and said that he probably should’ve missed last week... this isn’t an assessment on two weeks though, this is a look at his whole career with us.

Marshall has at least shown that he can take a grab at times. Think the issue with your idea is that Longer is useless.Spinner wrote: ↑Sat 04 May 2019 6:17pm Probably not that unpopular.

Not useless on a day we got half the hitouts.
Would allow the midfield to set up more attackingly at stoppages.

Marshall dominated the hitouts against Freo and we lost... Got dominated against the Bombers and Hawks and we won.

Hard to shine in our forward line with our piece of s**t gameplan.

Re: Unpopular Opinion
He's ok. Have to consider injury and delivery. And he gets best defender. But we are a team full of B Graders with a B grade coach, so why pick on him. Most forwards look second rate compared to Nick who won so many games for us (and probably got AR and extension in the process). GWS are a class team the proud clone of the AFL. We are trying to make do with crumbs from the big table. Not a game for recriminations.

Re: Unpopular Opinion
Again, not based on one game, a look at his career with us. Has played some good games and is a good honest guy. But relying on him to be the key forward hurts us because he just isn’t very good.Yorkeys wrote: ↑Sat 04 May 2019 6:48pm He's ok. Have to consider injury and delivery. And he gets best defender. Re: Unpopular Opinion
You would have to be stark raving bonkers to use a No1 draft pick on a key position forward who can't get much of the ball and can't score many goals.
Lucky that does not apply to St Kilda then.

If you had of stated this opinion within an hour after the wins weve had this season it would have been unpopular, stating it within an hour after a loss just makes you look like a sore losing tosser.The_President wrote: ↑Sat 04 May 2019 6:19pmI understand that they came out and said that he probably should’ve missed last week... this isn’t an assessment on two weeks though, this is a look at his whole career with us.

Re: Unpopular Opinion
Bump
What gives me the s***s is that people's opinions and judgements on players are influenced by players poor efforts when they are playing sore or injured. Bruce was best on versus Collingwood and again in our best players in the match against the Eagles. When he is 100% fit he is easily one of our top players.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-06-02/ ... m=facebook
If I was a player who was on a contract that had match payments and incentives based on how many games I played, I would be putting my hand up to play as well. It's up to coaches and the footy department to have the balls to say NO!
Josh Bruce was one of the best on ground this year in Round 2 versus Essendon. He apparantly fractured a bone in his spine in round 3 versus Freo and received a corkie in the Round 3 win versus Melbourne. He was basically stuffed and couldn't play footy in that first quarter versus Adelaide and the coach admitted that he shouldn't have played him.
With all the information that has come to hand it is so disappointing that Richo does not have faith in using his young charges who could play a role and at least compete at 100% fitness
