Can't stand those arrogant pricks.
The very fact that the prestigious Anzac Day match is gifted to Collingwood and Essendon makes me want to puke.

We know Essendon are drug cheats, and now we learn they 'stole' Dylan Shiel from us via a salary cap abuse, and the whole lot of sanctioned by the corrupt AFL. And I'm sure there is a reason the players are attracted to Collingwood......

In a warped sense I find it amusing the drug cheats are ripped off by the green slime.

The AFL is not even close to an independent governing body, they are an incestuous boys club.

I agree, but how the hell did Essendon get an invite? They were worse than us in the 70's, inherited the league's most tedious self-proclaimed tough guy as coach in the 80's, who then proceeded to act like an arrogant tool for next 20 years, cheated their way to a premiership, and somehow they become a 'power' club? They're even talking about giving them the Good Friday slot against North permanently now...enough already!

As much as I hate Essendon always getting the gig it's obvious why.
The AFL is a business and the injectors put bums on seats.
We don't.

Good on Essendrug fans for booing Pendles/umpiring. Couldn’t give a f*** it was Anzac Day or not, the filthy maggots (umpires) deserved it

Yep. I do. Biggest over reaction to umpiring I’ve ever seen. I was at the game. Bombers were gifted a goal in the last quarter to Baguley. Absolutely gifted. Bomber supporters very quiet on that.

Don’t get sucked in by all the booing. Bunch of sooks. Pies didn’t get one dodgy free that resulted in a goal.
If you watch carefully one of the dropping the balls everyone is whining about, the pie player actually disposed of it. Leigh Matthews said as much. They all occur in Collingwood fwd line and none results in a pies kicking a goal.

I see this a lot from Dons supporters...most teams put bums on seats in these kind of games, as we have in the past.

It's simply not true. We had Good Friday last year, and without considering our terrible performance, the crowd was pitiful.

The sad reality is that if you are going to have a blockbuster game, then the crowd HAS to match the occasion. And the reality is that we don't have the supporter base.
Ppl who think everyone would turn up regardless because of the occasion are deluding themselves. I went with my wife yesterday (who is a pies supporter) and I reckon 90% of the crowd was either Magpie or Bomber. Very few neutral.

You would find far more neutral supporters at a big final than at a game like this. If Saints played in this game, I reckon we'd get 60k

Fill the trophy cabinet and watch how many St Kilda fans there'll be at the football

If the Saints win a few premierships the membership will double very quickly and we can finally catch up to the likes of Geelong and Hawthorn. People love winners and they'll come out to cheer and support a winning club and associate themselves with winners.

When Hawthorn and Geelong were both strong flag contenders they pulled a crowd of 80,000 for the Easter Monday match in 2014. There has been a drop off in form for Geelong over the last five years and they weren't the flag favourites or one of the strongest top 4 fancies during this time as they were 5-10 years ago. The crowds dropped off a bit with Hawthorn seen as also not a strong contender these last few years. The crowds have been low 70k or mid 70k. This year the match only pulled 66K and I believe it's because Hawthorn are currently seen as struggling to secure a top 8 spot.

Brisbane struggle to pull crowds but when they were winning flags they drew excellent crowds and the excitement is building again and people want to be a part of it. I think they had a packed house the other night up at the Gabba. Same with Sydney Swans. They won 2 flags in the last 15 years and people want to be associated with a winning club. The fact that they have been finalists and a strong top 4 club means that they continued to draw excellent crowds

Yeah - I agree with this to an extent. Of course more ppl come to watch you once you start winning. We would have drawn 85k + to the G for our Rd 14 game against the Cats in 09 I reckon. The problem is sustaining the crowds. Collingwood and Bombers have done it over 25 years on ANZAC Day. And both clubs have been poor at different times over this period. We were given Rd 1 2011 against the Cats, we'd just played off in a GF the year before and had played in another the year before that. The Cats were at the tail end of their dynasty and were still powerful having won 2 out of the last 4 flags.

Would have been lucky to draw 40k at the G that night.

We just need sustained success. We stuffed up after 2010. We overpaid our stars to keep them at a traditionally bottom club and not get poached by the power clubs. This affected our ability to attract and pay other stars, let alone retain the ones we had which we had to off load in the end. We made a poor decision to go to Seaford which affected us on and off the field. If we'd just managed to be like the Cats and continue to make finals and be in contention, then we'd be regarded as a top club now and would have some pull and power when lobbying for these games. Sadly we don't.

That's correct, but conversely numbers for ANZAC Day dropped off during the mid-2000's, but the game was never taken away from the Don's...so is the 'bums on seats' theory really true? I don't think so, as other clubs (including the Saints) have historically never had trouble pulling people to an ANZAC Day gig.

Good Friday is a bit of a dud concept and is no ANZAC Day...a new concept, nowhere near the publicity, featuring two pitiful clubs at their sustained lowest ebb in decades last year. IMO Good Friday should never have been pulled from the Doggies (as much as I hate all the whinging that accompanied the move) and certainly should never be given to Essendon or Collingwood. We have Maddie's, and that's fine by me.

Good Friday last year was a disappointing crowd, but it was an away game for us. The North members did not turn up.

Any game on a 4 day break is also likely to suffer from people (no matter how devout as supporters) who may be able to get away.

We were putrid last year on Good Friday and then hopeless for the rest of the season. North were on the up (however ironic that now is). I don't blame them switching the Good Friday match.

But I don't think one poor Good Friday turnout is good enough as a justification for keeping us out of blockbuster games for all eternity if we are playing decent enough footy.

The Collingwood away game at the G in round will be a good litmus test for our supporters. Saturday afternoon, the traditional footy slot. I can't wait for it.

I must have missed the reason why in a fair competition any club(s) should get a permanent locked in blockbuster game.

Then try explaining the logic and why they should adopt it to respected international competitions like EPL, NBA, etc. etc.

Our lopsided biased corrupt fixture is an international laughing stock.

SP - totally your right to have that opinion , but to ensure all opinions are represented on this forum I record that I disagree with you vehemently. In my view the occasion is way bigger than the game , and those people gave no respect to the occasion.

I stopped watching it a couple of years before the Bummers were busted. It just became too much about football more than Anzac Day

The cheats should’ve been stripped of being involved so I certainly do not watch it now A disgrace
