I haven't been a big wrap for Jack Newnes for a couple of years now and thought he was very lucky to retain his place last year. Maybe he was playing injured.

However this year I think he reflects the form of the team. He has played five excellent games without being BOG and he looks a different player.

In the past he hesitated when he got the ball usually looking for the backward option first. This year he nearly always has gone forward and picked much more attacking options.

He was playing injured.

I thought that was pretty widely known.

Jack had knee surgery pre season 2018 and had very limited prep before playing. He had little things along the way in the season but the reality was that his running power was down on previous seasons and that is his main weapon. He probably should not have played the early games but had to play on because he was needed as a leader on on the field later with no Roo, no Joey and then no Roberton, no Bruce etc

Exactly. Great and 100% accurate post.

Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

One of the best things about the 666 set up is that genuine wingers seem to be back

Which is fantastic as has always been a great position for runners such as Jack

Playing him across half forward last year did not work.
Much better player up the ground.
Recruiting Parker and Kent has allowed him to do this.

Newnes, Billings and Sinc rotatating on the wings, make quite the Triple threat. Recruiting Parker and Kent and having Long back in the team again, has allowed this to happen. Been an excellent move so far. Seems our coaching staff have half a clue after all!

Great team man as well.

See him run in and share with Kent the first goal of the match, could have kicked it himself but gave it to a guy against his old club to bring a team mate into it.

great stuff.

Finally dawned on them!
Mind you if you're going to break the drought and recruit outside runners (Parker, Kent, Long, etc..) after years and years of neglect and a decade or so of recruiting outside our needs - how about landing a Dangerfield, a Treloar, a Shiel (bend the AFL rules if we need to by offering the A graders some extra inducement - i.e., do some creative recruiting, like Essendon did) etc.. - that's what makes these other teams "great" - it's not their coaches.
They go after and get the A graders.
...and Newnes has been one of our better recruits (credit where it's due) ... considering we got him at pick 37.
