Dermot our new goal kicking coach

Post: # 1785385Post DJ Higgins »

Just saw on news that Dermot is our new goal kicking coach on a part time basis. No more Ben Dixon I guess

Dermot Brereton? I thought he hated us - or at least didn't rate us at all. Surprising - although he lives in Beaumaris so I guess it'll work - and he knows a lot about kicking goals.
The last coach we had at the club who held St Kilda in such low regard was Malcolm Blight.

Doesn't he love Josh Bruce.

Wonder what his mate Scott Watters thinks of this.

Sounded more like he is helping our forwards with their forward craft, with a special emphasis on Max King.

Dermot was a FIFO assistant coach at GWS during their first few years so he would definitely know Bruce and Steele.
The players will definitely respect Brereton as he has the runs on the board and an extremely strong work ethic. And he only knows one way.

Fantastic news! Dermie has a great understanding of the modern game and we're lucky that our forwards will be able to learn from the great man - Max King especially should really benefit from his guidance - good move Saints. Welcome Dermie!

You could be right I only caught part of it but I thought the blurb at the bottom of the screen said goal kicking coach. Either way he is on board coaching something

Spoke to Dermie some years ago, and he didn't give the impression he hated the Saints, in fact he was keen to see us do well and mainly reckoned we were recruiting the wrong kind of players..or something similar.

He is not our goal kicking coach!!!!!

He is helping our forwards with their craft, including Marshall (who is still seen predominantly as a forward within the Club), interesting!!!!!

Well that was a surprise. Big time

If nothing else it will stop him bagging us.

On a more serious note the leading patterns of our forwards does need work. And guys like King will learn hugely on the art of being a key forward. Battle is ever swung back up forward could bloom as he has the build to play like Dermie.

Just need someone else now to teach the rest on how to actually kick the ball to the advantage of a forward which IMO is actually our biggest problem at present.

And he wouldn't bother wasting his time if he didn't think we had something going for us. This could be a real good move

Lethers delivers once again. Have to give it to the man. Another quality in for the club.
Dermie will be working with key position players.

Uck me...I knew it!!

We are being overun by ex-Hawthorn people. Probably end up being as effective as bloody Dicko...

which is not effective so far...that bloody Pelchen fella came to us after Hawthorn. Although I suppose he wasn't really a true Hawks person was he? I suppose when Peter Hudson came to us it was all very positive. In fact I thnik it was quite huge

Hey, I'm begginning to think this might work...

We are similar to them when they were a struggling club 60 years ago and they had only 1 flag and they know what it's like to be up against the power clubs for so long. Maybe Hawthorn people deep down understand what that is like and they want to help us out. Didn't we get some high level administrative recruit who does football statistical analysis from Hawthorn?

Of course what about Ratts...That's right Hawthorn. Who knows who is next. Clarko might want to come on board

In the SEN article Brereton says he was contacted by Gubby Allen. Lethlean and the club would have had to OK it though you would think, and Lethlean make the appointment.

I know, why would we ever want to be inundated with people from a club that have been on top of the AFL for the best part of the last 30 years??? And why would you want to employ a guy who is considered one of the best centre half forwards the game has ever seen? Just crazy s*** from our club!!!!

One thing is for sure .. Dermot is all about Dermot.

If he can work wonders on the Saints current big forwards (Bruce, Marshall, Longer and Membrey) and later Max King his feathers will be fluffed up and he will be strutting around in full peacock mode.

If he cant add value or see real potential he wouldnt be doing it.

As long as we don't see Jeff Kennett come on board, I'm happy.

Thanks, Ted.

It doesn't mean it was Lethlean’s idea which was my point.

This is true. Brereton was blessed with undeniable skill and a will to win at all costs. He is very good at analysis after the fact, he understands quite quickly what could have been done better. Hoping that will and that instruction will transfer, building confidence and skill sets.

Hopefully he's not being paid per word, would cost a fortune! Welcome & stick it out for a few seasons, I'm sure his stocks will rise and I've no doubt he sees that as well.

Yes, I was hinting it was probably Gubby's idea. But the buck for these appointments stops with the GM. At least that is what we are told on here.
