Forward Structure
Despite the win , the forward line still doesnt appear to be functioning properly.
Looked better when Marshall drifted forward. There is a place there for Paddy or King if either can get themselves fit and firing. Adding a 3rd tall should free up Membrey a it more.
Its an archaic tactic but Id like to what resting Marshall and Acres at FF rather than the bench looks like.
One of Kent or Parker has to go back to Sandy when Steven is ready to come back. Both could benefit with the extra time and space at VFL to find their touch.
Long and Lonie are locks at present.

Re: Forward Structure
The FF spot is being warmed for Max King. So I have been told.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Forward Structure
Should be Marshall sitting with Longer doing hit outs... then Marshall pinch hitting when Billy needs to rest

Longer turns it over too much.
Marshall is way ahead of him.

I don’t disagree that Marshall is ahead of him but we need another ruck and tall forward.saintspremiers wrote: ↑Sun 14 Apr 2019 10:15pmNo.

If u bring in one of Longer or Pierce you cover both spots with one player

We could use a 2004 centimeter agile young gun up in that forward line... not easy to come by though....

Re: Forward Structure
Marshall should rest forward, he just looks so dangerous . I'd only bring Billy in when he is cherry ripe. I think Lewie is miles off it at this stage.skeptic wrote: ↑Sun 14 Apr 2019 10:40pmI don’t disagree that Marshall is ahead of him but we need another ruck and tall forward.saintspremiers wrote: ↑Sun 14 Apr 2019 10:15pmNo.

As for King, well I hope they let him build slowly through the VFL. Maybe gift a few games at the end of the year depending on how we are travelling. Would prefer to see him with another preseason under his belt and some time in the gym

Re: Forward Structure
A replica of the game last season except we got the points this time
We are missing Mc Cartin and the resultant structure of our forward line - so hopefully he is on the improve
Membrey was poor today - and both Kent and Parker were ineffectual
The defence lined up with Battle, Wilkie and Paton who each did their job effectively and will only get better Battle will be a star
Acres was the match winner including with his disposal which has always been a step in front of most others Just needs to keep working on his contested marking to be the star of the game that has always shown he will be
Billings. Enough said. Also coming of age as a star of the game - and add Gresham
Class. Pace. Inventive
Plus there was the contest - Billy Slater?
We need ruck support for Marshall - and if we can reduce our injury list he will not be needed as a forward, just as the ruckman he is
So we await Carlisle who showed against Melbourne last season that he can take that responsibility
Carlisle as a utility tall will be dynamic
There were some passengers today but the class of others and the commitment to the contest saw us thru
Steven to come back is automatic
Long has an X factor so competition as a small forward is fierce
I have always been of the view that Billings, Dunstan and Acres was the start of the rebuild hampered by no cover experience - and now we start to see what potential we have
Those higher Draft Picks will serve us well as will the addition of the likes of Steele, Carlisle, Hannebery and now the likes of Wilkie
From a life time ago I have always liked 190cm plus defensive flankers - those who in weak teams would be playing as key defenders hence my like for Roberton and Wilkie - and Battle on a defensive flank
We still have some holes - and there will be ups and downs but we have the core - and vital confidence is building (which wins do)

Only plays at MCG, and all aircraft must have him marked as a hazard on their charts.
Of course he can't travel interstate

You’d have to Test his vertical leap against the Rialto! Plus I’d imagine testing skin folds would be hard too...WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 15 Apr 2019 5:06amwouldn't be any good at Marvel with the roof closed.Wayne42 wrote: ↑Sun 14 Apr 2019 11:49pmThat is one tall dude, can anyone kick that high so he can take a mark over his headSuperDuper wrote: ↑Sun 14 Apr 2019 10:52pm We could use a 2004 centimeter agile young gun up in that forward line... not easy to come by though....

Re: Forward Structure
I don’t understand why people want to play Longer or Pierce.
Marshall has been incredible the last couple of weeks as a ruck for 80% of the game. Longer/Pierce can’t play anywhere else so you either have them sitting on the bench for 80% of the game, cutting down on the midfield rotations.
Or Marshall goes forward for 80% of the game where he’s not as effective.
I think we’re much better with Acres or others pinch hitting in the ruck for a few minutes every quarter and concentrating on getting the clearances.
BTW when Marshall took the two marks inside 50 and kicked the goal he was playing in the ruck and drifting forward which is probably why he wasn’t picked up by any defenders.

Re: Forward Structure
Marshall drifting forward stretched their defence, particularly with Stratton and Frawley off i.e. if he hadnt drifted in, we wouldnt have taken a mark. So I think a 3 rd tall gives us that ability for a whole game, its just a question of who plays there. I am sure if Paddy was fit, we would have played the 3 tall structure. I also dont think Marshall can cop the battering in the ruck for 22 rounds. Also noticed with our new game plan, we intentionally kick the ball long and wide to a contest out of the backline and yesterday the taller Hawks picked this off and sent it back regularly. If we had another tall such as Longer playing, he only has to bring the ball to ground for this to be effective.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Mon 15 Apr 2019 8:52am I don’t understand why people want to play Longer or Pierce.

At this stage, the coaches are preferring the smaller setup and relying on Parker and Acres marking inside 50 and hard to argue so far.
