Re: Frees: For and against
Some clear umpire errors today, the high tackle that was paid as holding the ball, and the deliberate OOB spring to mind.
We got a few I wasn't expecting us to get, but I think some dubious frees against lined up with the time Essendon were getting the momentum.
I'm not too worried about the free kick counts themselves, it's the 50/50 free kicks that shift the momentum and deflate our pressure that concerns me. A few dodgy frees against and we drop our pressure - every time.

The deliberate rushing the ball decision goat my goat.
How often is that rule ever enforced?
And then later in the game the Dons do likewise and no free kick to us! Goal to Dons, zip to us.

Re: Frees: For and against
The call against Lonie was right, but the rule is so stupid. Didn't they used to just ball it up in the goalsquare? I don't get why it has become such a harsh punishment now.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2019 10:50pm The deliberate rushing the ball decision goat my goat.

There were no bummers closer than past the end of the goal square for Lonie while Lonie and co were hot on the hammer of the bummer.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

It's the ones they miss that give me the absolute sh#ts, e.g that last bummer goal.

Yes I agree on the Lonie call. BUT the Dons one was equally awardable, and I have seen other games where even more blatant ones are ignored.shrodes wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2019 10:56pmThe call against Lonie was right, but the rule is so stupid. It is almost as if the umps go by the letter of the law with us, but are more flexible with the other teams.
One type of decision last week was the deliberate over the boundary line decisions. Several Saints penalised when being tackled and disposing of the ball along the boundary line to have it go out over a shallow angle and not straight over.
Whereas a Sun's player in the midfield running straight at the boundary line, but well from it when tackled just kicked straight for line in a zone with no players. Decision to just through the ball in. To me this was baffling as it was much more blatant.

Re: Frees: For and against
Any deliberate rushing the ball call is an outrage...99/100 times it's never paid, it's almost a veiled threat rather than a rule. How often did the Suns do it last week? Don't get me started on deliberate out of bounds last week...we only had to be near it and a free was awarded to the Suns. I struggle to think of another team I've seen deliberate called against more than us...ever since Monty's 80m kick up in Brissy years ago, we've practically owned it!saintsRrising wrote: ↑Sun 31 Mar 2019 12:03amYes I agree on the Lonie call. I think that was at Docklands.degruch wrote: ↑...ever since Monty's 80m kick up in Brissy years ago, we've practically owned it!
The ball wasn't even aimed at the boundary, but had a couple of dodgey bounces and veered oob in the city wing.
One of the worst umpiring decisions ever!
For generations, parents will be relaying this story of outrage to their children as they in turn received it from their parents.

Re: Frees: For and against
I agree its a stupid rule. One Richmond game a few years back and the rule makers panicked. Get rid of it. I agree with deliberate out of bounds, but getting penalised for a deliberate point is totally unnecessary.shrodes wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2019 10:56pmThe call against Lonie was right, but the rule is so stupid. Re: Frees: For and against
I totally agree with the Lonie rushed behind free kick and it should be paid more regularly.
The Kent deliberate out of bounds was a shocker as was the free against Webster for holding the ball when Stringer practically clothes lined him

I don’t mind the rule as it keeps the game alive, but be consistent.saint64 wrote: ↑Sun 31 Mar 2019 2:28amI agree its a stupid rule. One Richmond game a few years back and the rule makers panicked. The call against Lonie was correct by the rules, but how many times each match do you see similar ignored. I’ll bet this will be the only deliberate called all weekend.
Apart from a couple of shockers each way I didn’t notice the umpires for most if the match.

Re: Frees: For and against
So no credit for the team - hey how about instead of the toss to determine who kicks where - we toss to see who is favoured by the umpires and just call the game off after that?
I don't like some of the calls - and I think we get the raw end of the stick - but to assume that the umpires are the cause of our losses/wins is drawing the long bow - as I say to Sainter_Boy - get far enough ahead that the umpires can't influence the game and you are sweet!

Incorrect the umpires can determine the tempo and momentum of a team. They destroyed Brisbane Thursday night.

Re: Frees: For and against
'Destroyed' because Brisbane let them - play the next passage of play not the last and the Umpires become irrelevant. If you need to beat 21 player - step up!CURLY wrote: ↑Sun 21 Apr 2019 12:29pmSainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sun 21 Apr 2019 12:17pmSo no credit for the team - hey how about instead of the toss to determine who kicks where - we toss to see who is favoured by the umpires and just call the game off after that?
