Re: Billy Slater impact article
Do we really need want to increase on-field celebrating?
Just get on with it and score more goals.
We don't want to become like soccer where there is practically an orgy after a goal.
Save the wild celebrations for "special" moments not routine ones.

It's something like that, that will push a player to gut run when he hasn't got much left in the tank because his team needs it.
When your team properly gets around you it lifts your spirits and gives you optimum energy as opposed to a flat celebration where say 2 players come over and say well done/ It subconsciously pushes people to do better considering the outcome.

Re: Billy Slater impact article
So when we are 6 goals down and someone kicks a junk-time goal, is the fullback still expected to run the length of the ground to jump on the goal kicker (after he finishes his chainsaw).
Perhaps we could get in Graeme Murphy work on choreographed celebrations interweaving mime and acrobatics?

Yeah...I know what you're hinting at too.
How dare one of the players sit in the back corner at every meeting! The outrage!
Really liked this part too:
"Much like Geary, you can sense the room sits up and takes notice every time Hannebery interjects. It would be a no-brainer to see him added to the leadership group when it's finalised in coming weeks."

Good article. Kudos to Simon Lethlean for reaching out to Billy from the day he basically retired.
There are some good saints articles coming out on AFL.com with our what I guess is a new marketing push to be open as a club.
This article unfortunately falls a bit short of the mark IMO, it almost paints Billy out to be a gimmick instead of a real mentor to the players.
Big JD worked with the saints last season as well (and pretty much every other VIC based club) so this is nothing new. The link with JD might draw closer given his historical storm ties with Billy and JD's son Connor.
If you ever think you can handle yourself physically get down to Mornington or Notting Hill and have a wrestle with JD, one of the most accomplished physical beasts you will ever encounter. Would have been a UFC Superstar if he was a young man today.

It all depends what you want to take out of that article - and it is interesting to see that different people gravitate towards different things - Joffa is leaning more to the direction I saw it - BUT I actually thought it was one of the more exciting things I have read re the saints new direction and preseasonJoffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 30 Jan 2019 3:02pmThanks for the link Ted, nice forum etiquettetedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Tue 29 Jan 2019 8:20pm Billy's big impact: Slater an instant success at Saints - http://m.afl.com.au/news/2019-01-29/bil ... -at-saints

What I liked was
"If you just think about him as an athlete and forget about the code he played, his step and evade and ability to stop someone else, he's been able to do some really good work with our players in that space."
Slater has taken several sessions, with a number of physical tackling sessions also completed off-site at Jiu Jitsu guru John Donehue's gym in Notting Hill.
Slater's diary is also set to be clear for St Kilda's matches this season ahead of a potential role on the interchange bench talking players through high pressured situations.
With regard to increased celebrations - I can only imagine that, that was for 1 session only and not the focus of his work - and i don't mind it - they are looking at the storm for inspiration - storm win a lot of games - if your a 'winner' dont shy away from it - I am sure it builds confidence in the team - I am sure the idea is train hard, play hard - win games - if your winning dont be afraid to let the opposition know - clearly the celebrations will be kept in the cupboard if they are getting pumped by 10 goals - but in preseason I am glad they are training and preparing for winning games not for getting pumped by 10 goals every week

Thanks for posting the links, and well done to the marketing dept.
How good does Luke Dunstan look? Appears he is doing everything to give himself the best opportunity to lock down a midfield spot.
I like the focus on celebrating onfield efforts and goals. I think in 2018, there were lots ofoccasionss we kicked a goal, the crowd was subdued and the players barely reacted. Probably more to do with the fact we were either out of the game or it was the first goal after half a dozen misses.
Billy Slater was the best, or certainly top three in a hard international sport for a long time at all levels. Hes hard as nails and uncompromising and if a bit of that rubs off it will make us a better side.

Re: Billy Slater impact article
Yeah didn't see anything in that article that suggests the players are being taught "wild celebrations", I'm guessing the club was trying to promote how they are executing their plan to improve leadership and create a winning culture and a quote was used to create a simpler message that stimulates conversation and a pat on the back for the summer time journo.ausfatcat wrote: ↑Wed 30 Jan 2019 12:03amHalf the article was about Slater working with on field celebrationCairnsman wrote: ↑Tue 29 Jan 2019 9:45pmDid you misinterpret the context? Is 1 day a week at the club enough to bring impactful and lasting culture change ?
Seems a bit tokenistic and perhaps more good PR than good management.

Practice celebrating a goal during training.
Yep.
Because on match day, when they kick 4.18, not much celebratin going on there, guys n goils

Re: Billy Slater impact article
People missed the point here. The celebrating a goal won't mean cartwheels and backflips it will be about recognising success and rewarding it. A positive culture cornerstone
