Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
I always rated Darren. Always. Horrified he was delisted. Pleased he has a contract at the Hawks. Deserves a chance. Never got it at the Saints due to injury and stupid player development. No midfield time in the seniors after blitzing it at Sandy. No time looking at him at half back this year to explore whether he could play that role. Minchington much better than Savage IMHO when it comes to intensity at a contest, better in traffic and better at hitting targets by foot. Hawthorn love their elite kicks. Got another one for free. Lucky we are so flush with them!
AwayInUSA no longer ... have based myself back in Melbourne for a decade of Saintsational Success (with regular trips back to the USA)

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
Minch had potential and I liked him, but like Nathan Wright was going onwhere, got injured alot and couldn't put enough good games together. You won't get 22 games out of him, but he could suit Hawthorn based on where they are at at the moment. He could play a few good games for them here and there if he stays fit. Alot of people were shocked they're taking a punt on him because thats what it is...a punt.
Saints needed to rejuvenate their list and get rid of guys on the fringes like Weller, Freeman, etc.

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
That little dwarf we recently had coaching the saints really rated Minch, Said he was a better prospect than most of our list.
But hey s*** happened to Minch and he never got to really show us how good he could be.
Probably will at the Dawks though.

I'm so glad that someone took Minch, the kid can play. Cruelled by injury in his time with us but if gets a good run at it, he'll be a regular with Hawks.

Kent has played 60 odd games in same time Minch has played 20 odd, so for those who like stats, Kent is the better option. Teddysainter sees Hawks as taking a punt and offering a slim lifeline but Saints as astute trading. Also Hawks gave up nothing for DFA.
At least both clubs have taken a safer option than a four year deal to Mav Weller on $700k per year

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
True, Saints paid nothing much for Kent either. Hawks list is ageing, taking risks with Scully and Scrimshaw (at little cost) , probably want Minch as a mature back up. I would rather keep Langford.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Sat 03 Nov 2018 5:59amYes agree Hawks are taking a bigger punt than Saints, but you agree both are punts.takeaway wrote: ↑Fri 02 Nov 2018 10:21pmKent has played 60 odd games in same time Minch has played 20 odd, so for those who like stats, Kent is the better option. Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
So Hawks finish top 4 at the end of the H&A and go out in straight sets. Coach is on the record after those losses as saying the list is lacking. Wind forward to the recruiting of Minch. Who does he kick out of thier best 22 from the finals campaign to secure a spot in a side that made top 4 in 2018?
Can I ask a supplement question, do you think Hawks will improve in 2109?

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
I think the Hawks will drop off a bit next year. Were shown up in the finals, Roughhead, Burgoyne, Birchall, Puopolo, and quite a few others are past their prime, and replacements not as good. They have no draft picks, have traded for now with Wingard, Scully Scrimshaw etc. Wingard should be good at a new club, Scully & Scrimshaw - who knows - but risky. They may even fall quite a bit down the ladder. But then again, it is Hawthorn.Cairnsman wrote: ↑Sat 03 Nov 2018 7:08am So Hawks finish top 4 at the end of the H&A and go out in straight sets. Along with other sub plots in 2019, the punt by Hawks to take Minch will be an interesting one to watch, will it answer the myriad of supporter claims:takeaway wrote: ↑Sat 03 Nov 2018 9:57amI think the Hawks will drop off a bit next year. he's going to show the Saints where our development expertise lacks,
he'll make us regret not giving him more of a go,
hawks will turn him into a half back player,
he's a defensive forward that could turn a game,
our club can't develop real well,
better than Lonie and now will prove it,
hardly any supporter wanted him on the list,
didn't get the opportunities he deserved
super fast and skilful but spud coach never gave him enough opportunities,
another dud move by the nobs running our club,
Anyone willing to take a guess at who Minch pushes out of Hawks best 22 to help them go one better in 2019?

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
The point that most of the Minch supporters are making is that the Hawks rated him to be deserving of a list spot and the Saints don't. If we were the successful club over the last 7-8 years maybe we would think that we were the smart ones but the probabilities are in the Hawks favour.
Minch might not get a game with the seniors until round 15 or even round 20 but I'll bet you if he is called upon he'll be ready and he'll be coached well and he'll have an impact. If the Hawks are challenging for a top 8 spot late in the year or when they get injuries they'll have players who their coaching team believe have the potential to play their role. Minch is seen as a decent player by a group of coaches and a list management who have got it right more times than they get it wrong
When Billings wasn't putting in 100% effort or when Gresh wasn't following team rules, or when Lonie was being gifted games in 2016/17 or when Newnes or Weller were preferred ahead of developing the whole list including giving Minch a decent go in the seniors, that is when some of the fans and supporters have no confidence in the decisions made by the list management team and the head coach

I’d argue Kent is much more of a punt than Minch given his 3 year deal and the trading of a pick verses Minch’s one year deal as a DFA.
Given both are c graders at best and have a history of average performance over 6 or 7 AFL seasons it’s fair to say the saints have taken a real punt.
Not quite astute trading Teddysainter, perhaps we should have waited until the Demons delisted Kent before we swooped and could have got him on a one year deal.

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
No Joffa.
Kent is actually not a punt and I should reiterate. Kent has played over 60 games and kicked the same amount of goals. He played all of 2016 and would have the last 2 seasons barring injuries. Kent also played 13 and 15 games in his first 2 seasons. A late draft pick was used on him (which was surplus to draft night requirements) as he was still going to be with Melbourne next year. The stats prove he can play out a season when fit. Kent has played 1 less year than Minch. 3 years gives him time and it was a teaser to get him to nominate the Saints...so it was very astute trading.
Minch has only played 20 odd games and has only played over 5 games in a single year (2013). He averages 11 disposals and kicked 22 for his career. He has been on the Saints list for 7 seasons.
Pretty sure we know who the actual punt is based on the above facts and the real world. Its as clear as a bottle of vodka.
People are dreaming if they think Minch was going to play 20 games for the year and start averaging 15-20 disposals. I can understand why Hawthorn took a punt on him as he could fill gaps when required. The Saints needed to rejuvenate their list and let go the fringe players not getting us anywhere. Minch was a good kid, but there comes a time when players need to be let go. Similar to Goddard and Freeman.

This post doesn't actually make any sense at all, both players are fringe, one had to be traded for and was signed for 3 years on a decent contract and the other cost nothing in picks and will be on minimum wage for less time.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 03 Nov 2018 1:22pm No Joffa.

Re: Minchington signed by Hawks
Think you have generalised a bit there. Kent is fringe best 22 (in a better side), Minch is fringe best 35. Melbourne wanted to keep Kent, so Saints had to trade, very late pick though that they wouldn't have used anyway. Saints didn't want Minch, so Hawks got him without using a pick. Even by player ratings, Kent is rated higher so just based on that, would be a better chance of success, hence on a longer & better contract than Minch. Minch is not a free hit, still gets paid and takes up a spot.dragit wrote: ↑Sun 04 Nov 2018 12:28amThis post doesn't actually make any sense at all, both players are fringe, one had to be traded for and was signed for 3 years on a decent contract and the other cost nothing in picks and will be on minimum wage for less time.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 03 Nov 2018 1:22pm No Joffa.

So a punt by both clubs, with Kent a better chance of success, going by player's stats and ratings. I think Saints recruited Kent to play a role in the seniors, whereas imo Hawks recruited Minch as a backup.
All trading is a punt, Hawks took a huge punt with Scully, even Bombers took a punt with Shiel - cost a fortune, and if he is only a reasonable player for bombers, that is a fail. We won't really know the results of all these "punts" for a year or 3.
