St Kilda Football Club is excited to announce the addition of Brett Ratten to the Saints coaching department ahead of the 2019 season.
General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said Ratten’s experience would be an important asset to the Saints as the club looks to respond to a disappointing 2018 season.
“Brett is one of the most experienced assistant coaches in the game and we look forward to the impact he can have on our football program,” Lethlean said.
“He is highly regarded across the football industry and as midfield coach at the Hawks, was a key driver in their premiership success.”

Re: Ratten joins Saints
Bloody good appointment. Hopefully he doesn't get re-tooled into finishing the use of each verb with "strongly".
Even better would be if he manages to shuffle the Dribbler off into a corner to play with a new packet of crayons whilst he gets busy constructing a game plan that suits our list and then takes training over Summer.

Happy with this,2 questions, how long is he contracted for,and how much input will he have on draft and trades, imagine he would know our list fairly well being in the system for as long as he has

Re: Ratten joins Saints
I have no idea if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
I guess for me the Coaching structure for this season didn't work so I'm glad we are making the changes.
I guess my question is how do so many people on here know this is a good thing? Why are there so many experts on Assistant Coaches?

Re: Ratten joins Saints
Here's my take. We begin season 2019 with a few losses or embarrassing results in early rounds - goodbye Richo - hello Ratten as senior coach.

Re: Ratten joins Saints
Its exactly what I wanted the club to be doing. At least its proactive. Someone here posted that Richo and Rattan get along so that is excellent. However is calling the shots I dont care as long as the shots are the right ones. At least the club is on the front foot

Re: Ratten joins Saints
I think what he did with a pretty compromised Carlton list, and the game plan he developed, to suit the cattle he had available...it was pretty impressiveshrodes wrote: ↑Thu 30 Aug 2018 1:59pmThis is the internet. Re: Ratten joins Saints
Ratten, like Mark Williams, is a proven developer of young players. Ratten was a head coach, but as an assistant really shone with the Hawks and several players have named him as the reason they became Grand Final players.IluvHarvey wrote: ↑Thu 30 Aug 2018 12:58pm I have no idea if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I'd prefer Williams he is a bit better I think with seeing talent that others miss and drawing it out- but Ratten is " proof in the pudding" ....no one is guessing, hes done it, hes the real deal.

Why hasn't Williams been picked up by 15 teams - (assume Port Power,GWS and Richmond wouldn't be backing up again after giving him the sars.)David-Lee wrote: ↑Thu 30 Aug 2018 9:09pmRatten, like Mark Williams, is a proven developer of young players. Re: Ratten joins Saints
What if this was the first part of a much much bigger signing?
Ratten has stated in the past he doesn't want to be a Senior Coach again.
The new Prez has equivocated on Richo being coach next year,
Could Clarko be the man to take on the leauge's ultimate coacing challenge?
We know they work well together...
Funnier things have happened!

Well, I guess Port were tired of winning Grand Finals with a guy who built a team in a few short years.
As far as Richmond, it clear as crystal. Although Williams had worked his ass off developing young players like Martin and Riewoldt claim Williams insights and mentoring saved their careers, Hardwick was under the pump. Tigers had gone to the finals for 4 out 5 years but the Tigers were so desperate for the big win they were willing to cut Damien loose. He had heard the team meetings for years with players praising the efforts of Williams and he knew if he didnt act he would soon be the ex head coach and they'd be nominating William's.
So he went to the board and instead of telling them to pull their heads out of their asses and see the fine group of coaches that had sculpted a brilliant young team perched to grab the big one he threw Williams under the bus blaming him for their failure to proceed through finals. This is a fact both Williams and a person present confirmed this at a function in Geelong but Williams has said he wasn't upset bec as use he actually wasn't looking for the head coach role not then or ever so again.
All I know is William's coaches a grand final winning team and that means he's better than anything we've got. Dont use AFL coach selection as a standard for anything but morons. Most boards are filled with business people with little to no clue and great coaches are fired or rejected whilst weak minded men like Richo tickle their ears.

Re: Ratten joins Saints
He is not the messiah...start getting a grip. He is not going to turn a bunch of plodders into GF type players that's for sure especially as he is hired as an assistant coach.........get this .....not the head coach

Re: Ratten joins Saints
The fact Mark Williams is not in the AFL system shows how much of a clique the entire industry is. It is easier for a French au pair to get into the country.
Time for goal-kicking practice
