Players we have let go
Following my recruits team of players who played elsewhere first since 1990, i now have ones which played first at StKilda since 1990 which we have got rid of. Players may have come to us from elsewhere and we then moved them on , as per before AFL (post 1990 only):
Interesting a couple pop up in both teams
Prepare to cry
B: , Goddard, S Wakelin Shanahan,
HB: Dal Santo, D Wakelin, Guerra
C: McAdam, Fletcher, Rice
HF: J Smith, Lynch, Lappin
F: O'Brien, Lockett, Hall
Foll: Everitt, Ball, Winmar
Int: McEvoy, Stanley, Dawson, Sziller

Re: Players we have let go
I’ll add though...
The blunder group consists of Shane Wakelin, Matty Lappin, Brent Guerra and Lynch... all famously discarded / moved on
Smith wanted to leave if memory serves and I can’t remember the circumstances behind Fletcher, McAdam, Rice
The rest either played their best with us, were more or less finished when they left, or we got decent compo for them

Fletcher wanted a little more money ( not much) and Hudson thought he would baulk when he said no- Brisbane swooped - really stuffed up there .skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 18 Aug 2018 6:28pm I’ll add though...

I think they thought Rice knew was stuffed - played in Premiership.
McAdam I think was family ?

Re: Players we have let go
Half of those were over the hill when they left and had little or no impact at their other teams,
for example
such as McAdam 57 games
O'Brien 4 season 40 games
Winmar 20 games
Shanahan 37games
Hall, Lockett, smith, lappin, lynch, rice and Everette all hurt a lot thou

I disagree with you on Hall...ausfatcat wrote: ↑Mon 20 Aug 2018 7:02pm Half of those were over the hill when they left and had little or no impact at their other teams,

We got 3 picks for him and recruited Dal Santo in addition to trading in Heath Black and Trent Knobel. That’s a good deal. All were important players in 04 and oddly the latter 2 left at the end of that season. Still, not the deals fault that we couldn’t retain players.
On Everite... I don’t remember him really doing too much after he left? Have I got that right?
Still, could have been a premiership ruck if he was with us in 04

O'Brien played in 1996 GF and was critical in the loss when he got Ko'd in first quarter from an accidental knee.
Shanahan was important for melbourne PF run 1998 but best footy was behind him
Exercise wasnt so much about what we gave up in error more just bit of fun/pain of quality we did give up

Re: Players we have let go
Joel Smith did his knee in R20 1997 against the Pies. He was our clever accurate dual-sided ball deliverer off half back. It killed us in the finals.skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 18 Aug 2018 6:28pm I’ll add though...

He was out of contract and the Dawksngave him 3 years on bigger money (literally more money to do his rehab in yr. 1). Great get by the Dawks - played another 160-ish games; 2 x AA plus a B & F.
Go you red, black & white warriors

Re: Players we have let go
Nick Winmar was no dud for Footscray. In his two seasons he kicked around 30 goals in each. Wakelins a significant loss, Matty Lappin (cry), Big Boy (cry Niagra falls) , but I wonder if a team could also be composed of players we prematurely sent to the scrappers. Maxy Houghton for one.

Could have been an All Australian the way his career was progressing. Broke his leg badly ( both the tibia and fibula ) in the dying minutes of a game with a desperate act to win the footy late in the 2006 season. The Saints mismanaged his recovery and he was discarded by Toss Lyin at the end of 2009.

Lynch walked, so did McAdam...can't do much about that.skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 18 Aug 2018 6:28pm I’ll add though...

Guerra was reinvented, to his and Hawthorn's credit, but he looked like toast in his last season with us IIRC. Rice did his knee, came back and did his knee again, rehab was long and the club chose not to sign him up. He did his knee a third time right at the start of his time with Carlton too! Smith was very unfortunate, I'm sure the club would have kept him on?
