Big Changes for next year
We obviously need some serious change next year for things to get better - on and off the field - this thread is about the on field changes.
For me we need to bolster the ruck and midfield - fronts and backs ok in my book.
So the question is who are you happy to have traded out ( with all due respect to these guys but footy is business)
For me
Gilbo, armo ( only probably in package deal with Mav? Hickey? to GC) - otherwise I doubt they have any value
Mav
Newnes
Hickey
Longer ( Happy with Pierce but we need a Preuss or Lycett or something to trade out both Hickey and Longer)
Dunstan ( if he wants to go and we get some Gaff or Hannebry types during trade period)
Paddy - think we have excess big forwards - Paddy least needed of them for me and may still have some trade value - equivalent of about pick 20 ?
Savage - maybe - think I'd keep him
Stevens(obviously), wright and Minch I expect to be delisted with no trade value
everyone else I would try to keep

Re: Big Changes for next year
You wouldn't even get a well used Sherrin for a trade that had Gilbert, Armo, and Mav as a package deal.
I think the Saints brains trust would get laughed out of the room if they offered that up.
Gold Coast won't be a dumping ground for washed up players.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Big Changes for next year
I don’t care if McCartin stays or goes, just so long as selections are made on the basis of form and not draft position.
At the moment I have Membrey, Bruce and Marshall ahead of him and Battle also looks a prospect. That may change, of course, and if it does it will be on the basis of exposed form.
We’ve got to get real about this issue.

I’ve got my doubts about Paddy’s durability...
He gets hurt an awful lot

What about Bruce,i reckon we have missed him this year, but at the same time would not be against trading as both Battle and Marshall have a lot of potential to be better.Dont really know how he is recovering from injuries suffered

Re: Big Changes for next year
I Disagree with this. They will give a second round pick for Armo and Weller.
They have a lot of picks. pick 26-30 is not worth anything to them with where their list is at. They need some experience on the list even if they are just good triers.

Re: Big Changes for next year
There's a lot on here hoping the GC will take anything dished up to them...not sure after Cochrane's talk during the latter half of the season that they'll take that tact, especially after frustration with recent failures.

Re: Big Changes for next year
Time to plan for the next premiership Saints team. If St Kilda really want to utilise a big strong bodied player like Acres in the centre I believe we will reap big rewards. He is ready to take the next step in his career and we must give him 8-10 games in a row as a pure midfielder in 2019 ( if he's still on our list and not ttaded for a speculative 2nd round pick on a skinny kid that takes 5 years to develop).
If we continue with the same old midfield combination, then expect mainly the same results. I reckon he should replace Ross firstly but it could actually be Steven. Jack could end up being a permanent small forward for the last few years of his career.

I thought he really lifted in the last quarter Saturday and seemed to be in everything.Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 20 Aug 2018 2:00am Time to plan for the next premiership Saints team. Don’t know about him replacing Ross - who is likely to be our next captain very soon - but I agree. He needs to be where the ball is. I’m not sure Richo can see that, however.
It would be a monumental blunder to trade him and would cost the club at least one member.

Re: Big Changes for next year
Totally agree, we cannot afford to trade Acres or Billings, both, along with Gresham should be played further up the ground and rest when required in the forward line.
That said, we cannot expect to get rib eye for off cuts. Which is why we need to identify any surpluses, i.e. inside mids, HBF, rucks, big forwards that may offer value to another club.

Id trade billings & Gresham in an instant for the right picks/players.
This group is going nowhere. Sooner realised the better.

Re: Big Changes for next year
Hi,
I think st.kilda just need to upgrade/replace there ruck stocks. I think the team is young and needs to have trust/experience put into them.
St.kilda's history has always been replace and keep replacing, and all we get in return are rejects.
I think the team has lots of potential lets make it grow into a positive and back them all the way, that includes the coach.
Grant Thomas had the biggest arrogant head in st.kilda, but he was so able to make them kids trust each other and convince them they could do just about anything, and i think we need to implement the same ideas.
Cheers

Re: Big Changes for next year
Promote Piece and Marshall, plus 3 picks in the draft. Plus whoever we trade for (making room for 2)
1. Stevens - Delist
2. Gilbert - Retire
3. Armo - Retire
4. Weller - Delist
5. Wright - Delist
6. Minchington - Delist
7. One of Hickey or Longer - Trade for 3rd round pick
8. Brown - Retire/1 more year pending trades
Dunstan - Worth an early 2nd rounder or keep him on the list
McCartin - Keep him, worth more as a prospect than a trade.
Savage - One more year, no trade value
We need to figure out a forward structure, and quickly.
We cannot field a side with five tall forwards (Bruce, McCartin, Membrey, Battle, and Marshall) in it.

Re: Big Changes for next year
Cannot.
Bains surprisingly signed him as a FA for 2 years giving Brown the right to activate a third year at Brown's discretion. Brown has activated it and so Brown will be on our list for 2019.
Brown was a FA that no one else wanted and so for Bains to give a stop-gap FB this right was crazy stuff.
