The Hodge/Ball effect
Hawthorn sent Hodge to Brisbane with their blessings.
1) He was past his best so it made sense to replace him.
2) Brisbane would be no threat to Hawthorn
3) It was a part coaching role and hence a valuable step towards him oneday returning as their senior coach.
So Win Win Win.
But what happened?
Hodge has used his intimate knowledge of the Hawthorn gameplan and his ability to articulate and the respect he commands from the players to ensure they listen, learn and implement his wisdoms.
Hence not once, but twice Brusbane has upset the Hawks with improbable wins.
This has cost Hawthorn 8 premiership points and possibly a finals spot.
Perhaps they should have learnt from our experiences!
Trading, or should I say "giving away" Luke Ball to Collingwood at the end of 2009 undoubtedly cost us the 2010 Premiership as Collingwood with Ball's intelligence (the details of our gameplan plus his intellectual smarts) fully grasped our gameplan, improved upon it, and turned it against us. You can also add Max Hudghton into that equation.
Looks like Clarkson has been a little bit silly, though not as bloody stupid as Ross Lyon was?

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
Bit harsh on Clarkson. Anyone could tell that hodge looked cooked last year. He’s surprised everyone the way he’s gone this year. And I think his retirement decision was mutual. Paul Connors confirmed that. Hawks weren’t to know that he would change his mind last minute and leave. Players can’t hold clubs to ransom due to the IP they have.

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
I've been thinking about this for a while now, who could we recruit to copy what the Lions have done with Hodgy and the Eagles did with Mitchell.
Shaune Burgoyne would be in a similar mould to those 2 however he looks like his body is failing him quickly.
Jarrad McVeigh maybe?

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
Well there you go, so who else could you entice to take that role on? The Hawk stocks that included players with 3 or 4 premiership medallions and have designs on coaching have been taken, but something along those lines would help next year.Crossy66 wrote: ↑Sun 15 Jul 2018 8:46ami beleive McVeigh has signed on with the Swans in a coaching roleCairnsman wrote: ↑Sun 15 Jul 2018 8:23am I've been thinking about this for a while now, who could we recruit to copy what the Lions have done with Hodgy and the Eagles did with Mitchell.

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
The club is on record to be in the market for suitable free agents that may be available at the end of this season. Following is a full list of players eligible to change clubs, with some already recommitting to their existing clubs:
Restricted
Rory Sloane (Adelaide); Cam Guthrie (Geelong); Tom Lynch (Gold Coast); Tom McDonald (Melbourne); Shaun Atley (North Melbourne), Bachar Houli (Richmond); Andrew Gaff (West Coast), Scott Lycett (West Coast); Jeremy McGovern (West Coast); Jordan Roughead (Western Bulldogs); Mitch Wallis (Western Bulldogs)
Unrestricted
Richard Douglas (Adelaide); David Mackay (Adelaide); Andy Otten (Adelaide); Rohan Bewick (Brisbane); Ryan Lester (Brisbane); Marc Murphy (Carlton); Kade Simpson (Carlton); Jarryd Blair (Collingwood); Alex Fasolo (Collingwood); Tyson Goldsack (Collingwod); Ben Reid (Collingwood); Tom Bellchambers (Essendon); Hayden Ballantyne (Fremantle); Michael Johnson (Fremantle); David Mundy (Fremantle); Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle); George Horlin-Smith (Geelong); Daniel Menzel (Geelong); Jarrod Harbrow (Gold Coast); Michael Rischitelli (Gold Coast); Shaun Burgoyne (Hawthorn), Taylor Duryea (Hawthorn); Paul Puopolo (Hawthorn); Ryan Schoenmakers (Hawthorn); Brendan Whitecross (Hawthorn); Neville Jetta (Melbourne); Scott Thompson (North Melbourne); Sam Wright (North Melbourne); Justin Westhoff (Port Adelaide); Reece Conca (Richmond); Shaun Grigg (Richmond); Sam Gilbert (St Kilda); Heath Grundy (Sydney); Jarrad McVeigh (Sydney); Nick Smith (Sydney); Mark Le Cras (West Coast); Eric Mackenzie (West Coast); Luke Dahlhaus (Western Bulldogs); Tom Liberatore (Western Bulldogs); Dale Morris (Western Bulldogs)
McGovern, Gaff, Lycett have all been mentioned in the press as possibles for the Saints, and no doubt all 3 would be significant gains. Of the rest only a couple stand out - Guthrie and McVeigh in particular would add the "Hodge factor" to the exiting St Kilda list, coming from teams that have had long periods of sustained success.
Apart from bringing in some strong experienced players, I think it is crucial that St Kilda also bring in some really strong and experienced assistant coaches to replace both Sexton and McPhee, and possibly Kingsley, for reasons that I have expressed widely in previous posts - they have all been there far too long, and have had little or no personal playing experience at elite level.

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
Shane Edwards contracted until end of 2019.
McVeigh wont leave Sydney - he is originally from there.
The only mature player I think we should got for is Gaff. We will need pay serious overs to get him.
I think we could front load his contract heavily.

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
Malthouse has actually said he received most of his St.Kilda intelligence from Max Hudghton in 2010. Max has admitted to enjoying the 2010 flag a little too much.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Really good point. I get the feeling this year was the recession we had to have. From adversity comes opportunity.asiu wrote: ↑Sun 15 Jul 2018 2:43pm how about no body

Probably only Max & Ball will be happier than me when Lyon gets the heave-ho from Freo!

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
We need an older fella on list that wants to play 1 or 2 more years. Someone that has fantastic leadership and could move into an assistant role. Not sure if there is a Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge type available though. Things can change at season's end I guess. We need someone that can help teach the kids a thing or two.

About two or three years ago (can't recall) when Dusty was out of contract I suggested we target Titch Edwards as a free agent not Dusty.congorozides wrote: ↑Sun 15 Jul 2018 4:53pm Shane Edwards contracted until end of 2019.

Many on here didn't rate him as highly as me or at all, have you always been a fan Con or just got on board since Dimma shows him so much love?
I think he has been massively underrated for years.

Re: The Hodge/Ball effect
What we lack is A grade talent. I don't care if we recruit a solid citizen as long as he is still a very good player and not injury prone. The fact that Hodgey has been such a success at Brisbane is just as much to do with the their playing group maturing as well as what he brings as on an field leader
Our players this year have realised this year that they control a lot more than they thought ( remember the game plan changes after the Cats game). I think empowering some of them even more will help our improvement.
Put aside their playing abililities and value to our best 22, but I'd say we have ample experience like Nathan Brown, Josh Bruce, Seb Ross, Sam Gilbert, Dylan Roberton, and Armo and Jack Steven. Along with our captain Gears I think their is plenty of collective leadership and plenty of individuals available to step up. Luke Dunstan also seems worthy of a spot in a leadership group
