And Peter Sellers in "Being There". With the Trump pout he could move to US politics if the Saints ever release him. I reckon Mav always gets a game because when the panel ask Alan for his opinion he goes "Well, er, well, er…."

He sits there with his Donald Trump esque' pout and regurgitates the same s*** over, and over, and over and over again! It's just absolutely mind numbing!
The absolute tipping point was when they grabbed him at half-time of the Melbourne game, when clearly we were playing quite well offensively and moving the ball well and being very efficient with our use of it. And what is the first f****** thing that comes out of his mouth??? "Yeah, were were really strong"!!!
WTF dude!!!

Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
I reckon chocco would have put a few noises out of joint but if he was giving the reins for 5 years like Richo has been given he would have had us playing finals by now. Williams also has a lot of respect in the Koori community and we would have more pull to attract some of the best indigenous talent in the country to join the likes of Gresh and Longy. Btw, does anyone know which clubs currently have the most indigenous players on their senior lists?happy feet wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jul 2018 1:18pm When we selected Richo, I think the other contender was Mark (Choc) Williams.
Opinions please - would we have been better off with Choc?
Port Adelaide had at least 7 indigenous players that lined up in the team playing against us on Saturday; Ryder, Wingard, SPP, L Thomas, Bonner, Johnson, and Motlop. Not sure of the backgrounds on Clurey and Houston, but just with those 7 that's around a third of the players being indigenous...that's amazing!!

The players like and respect Richo. That is enough. He can coach and its why the Saints picked him in the first place. He has been let down by his assistants and players too much this season. He is a great bloke too so the personal comments are a bit unfair.
I seriously don't know what he can say or do in a press conference or in the public eye. Its just the daily grind of being a coach. Imagine trying to do it yourself? Is he any different than say Ken Hinkley? No and his side currently sits equal 2nd on the ladder. Same as Ross Lyon. He barely clicks out of first gear when speaking and sounds like he barely passed Year 9 but he can coach and players respect him. Lyon is about as marketable and likeable as Sloth off The Goonies (looks like him too).
Richo is doing a tough gig and his main role at the moment is to try turn the side into a finals side and continue building the side. His role is not to always come up with magical and sweet sounding words or show uber enthusiasm every day to please us supporters.

Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
This is exactly the way I feel - up until 2017, a 30+ year social club member who bled RW & Black. But this year? They've lost my trust and whilst I love them; I don't actually like them right now.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jul 2018 11:41am I dont like the guy either he is as bland, uninteresting, dull and boring an AFL coach that I can ever recall. Watching his post game interviews and supporter videos makes my skin crawl and previously I lapped up anything Saints related. It does seem that the players like him and he has the support of the club so I dont think he is going any where we are stuck with him.
I've spent a bit of time with Alan and in and around his circles. I'd characterise him as thus - he's a really nice guy and I'd love my Son to be coached by him - so long as my Son was playing against the Saints. That is - he's a good human being who's respectful and very articulate (away from AFL360 / Saints Members videos) he's actually very good but is so careful/wary/media-managed that he slips into Coach Beige, say a lot about nothing mode). The flipside of that is that he has absolutely zero c$8t in him and right now, I think that would actually help us a lot.
Roo alluded recently to a more gentle approach to peer feedback and perhaps that's a reflection of the younger generation but, it's still a strong violent game where the weakest get chewed up and spat out so, the Coach having a lot of aggression and mongrel about is not going to be a hindrance.
Unfortunately - we have a bland board, bland admin and our coach is also, at best ... bland. Organisations are a reflection of their leadership and it's not surprising that our list-build has been unimaginative and our style of play the same.

Yep, nice man, but lacks testes when hard conversations have to be had. Bland is a good description of our club. Beige. Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
Peak Richo was 2 years ago. Just hope not too much damage is done before he goes. Other clubs have zipped past us in the five years he has had the reins, but steady there nelly, no need to change horses mid slump. Saints used to be interesting even if unsuccessful. Board/Simon please change something soon for goodness sake, we are being beiged into oblivion. Players would otherwise come to the Saints even though we are bottom three. We have good facilities, a good core of players and can pay well, but who wants to be coached by Alan - other than Mav. Actually being released may be seen as a blessing by Adam Kingsley.

Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
We’re just making up the numbers atm. The AFL needs us so there’s no bye every week.
Staying out of trouble and being vanilla/beige like Richo keeps HQ happy.
In the mean time we don’t get the best out of our rebuild and stink it up.

This is a great post, the use of the word strong in every description, including thanking the fans as their noise was strong is becoming embarrassing.rodgerfox wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jul 2018 10:27am Synonyms for strong

How hard is it for the club to show some leadership and give him some proper media training before wheeling him out on shows like 360 and in media conferences to sell hope for the club.
The funniest is the start of his weekly members video after each match...... "Gidday Saints Members, I've just finished with the Press.........STRONG, STRONG, STRONG"!
Seriously another example of poor leadership at our footy club, not blaming Richo for this by the way.

Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
Fair call. Very few people can do anything about their physical appearance. Whilst I can't stand Richo's monotone offerings I do however, think that he's a genuinely nice guy who's trying his best. My fear is that he's polishing a turd and I'm not convinced that he's the most capable of turd polishers.

Re: I Just Can't Stand Richo.
All AFL coaches are the same - they are all vanilla (apart from Lyon, maybe - who might actually be toxic, judging by the recent post in our forum from the disgruntled Freo supporter) - it's the players and hence recruiters that ruin or make them.
That's where you can get the comparative advantage.
Otherwise, how do you explain Ross Lyon the 19-0 and 0-10 coach and the failure to success of a crop of AFL coaches Buckley, Hardwick, etc.. and the success to mediocrity of Beveridge.
It's all about the players. Full stop.
If history teaches us anything, it's that you better have the best recruiters and the best/healthiest players and list - and a degree of luck - a team's success starts and ends there. Clearly.
I reckon stay the course - keep our $500k/annum coach (and start standing him) - and spend the surplus wisely in other areas - by poaching the best recruiters and not breaking the bank chasing the illusory "$1 million plus best coach" (who doesn't exist - as Freo found out, the expensive way).
