Goddard

Post: # 1733211Post older saint »

Where is Hugh Goddard at?

I think it is a real concern that they chose to play Marshall as a key backman with Carlisle out instead of Goddard ( who had played well in he VFL the week before). Marshall looked all at sea at times down back .

Good teams ( granted most have own VFL teams - another topic) have straight like for like swaps . This allows continuity with game style, tactic expectations and the new player feels comfortable in the role required , even if at a higher level, as this is what thy do week in week out. We seem to select on basis of favourites or patchwork .

Watched him for a while on the weekend game. He looks slow and heavy. He will be exposed very quickly by a nimble forward.

Injuries have cost him dearly, seems to have lost all confidence and any pace that he did have.

Sad, as I thought we’d got a bonus when we got him @ pick 21, but I think he’s done and will be gone and years end.

How many games did Hugh play before rupturing his Achilles?

Heat stroke plays havoc with a system.
Really inhibits you getting up to elite fitness levels.
It's like the body won't allow itself to get pushed into the red zone again.

We've invested a lot in this guy, I hope we stick by him a bit longer to try and get the best out of him.

FWIW people on here were saying that Austin wasn't up to AFL footy a few weeks ago, I'm not sold that Goddard wouldn't also rise to the level.

Big blokes do take longer, Hugh is starting to find form in the VFL and developing at both ends, so the second half of the year will be critical to him getting another contract, obviously!!!!!

History shows us that we often write off young players too early in the piece. He is still only 21 (turning 22 this year), is in his 4th year and has played less than 10 games - mainly due to a bad injury last year. Achilles take a long time to get over also.

We should persist with him as he is a big unit with a very similar height and weight to N. Brown. He is one of the biggest fellas on our list and can definitely play key back (possibly even forward if required). Fellas like that don't grow on trees.

He has the talent. He just needs some good game time under his belt and to get his confidence back. I'd still be happy if he just developed and played the entire year at Sandy. Get a good pre-season into him and 2019 might see him back.

From my experience rupturing an Achilles' tendon is a more severe injury than rupturing an ACL

It takes some coming back from

In fact Achilles strains just seem to hang around and hang around impeding how you walk and putting pressures elsewhere

And they just keep happening

Therefore, from my knowledge, I would give Goddard plenty of time

Unless you have had Achilles problems you would not fully appreciate how debilitating they are

If we can structure a defence around Carlisle, Austin who is apparantly confirming the ability Port Adelaide saw in him and Goddard that also gives us flexibility in regards our use of Carlisle

Austin as a third tall aka Lever would work

What is the time frame for him though? we dont have years to wait for him to get back into the seniors. very mixed thoughts on goddard in this thread, some say he is cooked and others say he is coming good slowly.

Honestly I dont know where anyone was sitting watching Hugh play...he has always presented slow, sluggishly chasing forwards. His injuries didnt make him slow he always was in every game. I have watched 2 games in the past month of his AFL efforts on video and he was not impressive.

Thus, if you want someone not to walk again, you slice their Achilles with a knife, works every time!!!!!

ok....thats called knowing the subject your talking about. If he looks slow in the games that you have seen him then his future at AFL level doesnt look bright. Sounds like he is not taking marks or generally playing very well at all. A tough injury to get over but you would like to be seeing something progressive.

He's actually playing okay and taking 5 or 6 marks every game.

Wish people would lay off the kid.

Yes, he has been pretty good the last few weeks, both playing back and forward!!!!!

He will to continue to play well to get a contract next year!!!!!

All the best to him!!!!!
