How good is Gears going right now. Can’t get a gig in the backline so he gets named on a forward flank. Would much Armo in that position if we’re just trying to till it with someone. Jesus.

Was named on the wing last week, I wouldn’t read too much into it.The_President wrote:How good is Gears going right now. Can’t get a gig in the backline so he gets named on a forward flank. Would much Armo in that position if we’re just trying to till it with someone. Jesus.

Will play on Luke Bruest and from the job he did on Toby Greene last week I reckon Gears is going pretty wellThe_President wrote:How good is Gears going right now. Wishing that Jade Gresham or Jack Billings get 'ommitted' at some stage as well
Both need a kick in the pants.

Sicily is a big out for the Hawks- been one of their strong attacking defenders. Just need us to take advantage of this- Paddy and Membrey need to take the game on.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
would've preferred webster in for newnes - seems being a leader is a big selection advantage.
Hunter does seem a liitle too green though. A decent spell at Sandy can't hurt.

Newnes is the coaches love child.Mr Magic wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if there is a late change - Newnes out with concussion and either Armo or Clark in.
Never to be dropped.
He should’ve been dropped last week but clearly is a special case.
I’m sick of his shyte dusposal skills

Think I heard on the weekend, hasn’t missed a game in 4 seasons? Not sure if that was in general or just through injury.saintspremiers wrote:Newnes is the coaches love child.Mr Magic wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if there is a late change - Newnes out with concussion and either Armo or Clark in.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
SP, I've never been involved in an AFL Selection meeting, but I'd be absolutely staggered if any player was picked purely because they were the coach's 'love child'. I reckon that is just pure fan bs every time it is raised.saintspremiers wrote:Newnes is the coaches love child.Mr Magic wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if there is a late change - Newnes out with concussion and either Armo or Clark in.

No coach is going to select any player just because they 'like' them.
The team selections, as I understand it, are made by a panel including those assistant coaches tasked with specific areas of the game.
It beggars belief that a head coach would overrule an assistant coach purely because the head coach 'liked' a player.
In the end the coaches 'live/die' on their own performances (actual and perceived) and to think they would jeopardise that employment to pick a player who didn't warrant selection just because they liked' him is, IMHO, fanciful.
The reason(s) certain players are selected may not be obvious to us but I'm certain there are reason(s) other than that player being 'liked' by the head coach.

Yeah it's official.
Newnes' real surname is Richardson.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
Newnes is always about our 17th or 18th best player week in week out.
Always a couple to drop or somebody who get injured.
Hence he always manages to stay in.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
Personally I don't get the Newnes hate. Before he was concussed he speared a pass into our forward 50 and hit a teammate on the chest. Just about the only good kick into the forward 50 for the night. I think his kicking is better than given credit here. Perhaps a lack of viable options coming off half back or the wing with no-one in the forward 50 was a bigger issue? Far better kick than half the team.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
I’m so sick of this rubbish where everyone bar the goddam f$#king idiot Match Committee can see that Newnes at best is out of form and more likely just a complete butcher of the footy. He’s been horrible without concussion.desertsaint wrote:would've preferred webster in for newnes - seems being a leader is a big selection advantage.

Re: Team vs. Hawks
Newnes averages over 20 possessions from half back flank, about the same as Savage does (who is acknowledged as our best kick) - and even though he averages fewer forward 50 entries than Savage, he ends up with more score assists, as he picks the better options and initiates better chains of football.
Steven, Ross etc.and over 60% of our side, in fact, had a lower disposal efficiency than Newnes in 2017.
I don’t think Steven or Ross would play the half back flank any better. Newnes is an important player.

After 100 games I saw them as exceptions and not the rule. Recovering from pre season knee surgery. Re: Team vs. Hawks
Newnes is still 7th in total disposals and 5th in metres gained for the Saints this year. Not too bad, considering he barely played v the Giants.
His numbers are down for tackles, stoppages, contested possies and clearances though. He only has 3 tackles (for every game) to his name which is very surprising.

With a few others here, I don’t get the Newnes hate.
He is more often good than bad but, I concede, his errors can be obvious.
I probably could understand better if his teammates around him were miles better and could land a Sherrin on a dime 9 times out of 10.
But I guess he is the next in line for the Raph, Gilbert and Geary scapegoat jumper. Maybe even a Jayson Daniels
Wouldn’t be a St Kilda team without one.

Every club has a good 'ol scapegoat or two. Seems like its now either Gilbo or Geary or Newnes....even noticed some Saints fans are having an unfair crack at Billings and Gresham now too.Ape_Man wrote:With a few other here, I don’t get the Newnes hate.
