Webster and Newnes
I never watch replays of games we lose but I thought I would have a look at the 1st Quarter against the Crows because sitting at the game I thought we actually played well against a very good Team even with our overall skill level was poor. We created so many good opportunities we could have had 6 goals on the board instead of 2. Watching the quarter the big mistakes by Webster and Newnes really stood out, the Crows were gifted 2 goals out of the 3. They continued to give the Crows the ball throughout the game.
I have watched these 2 players for many years and they really cost us with decision making and poor skills weekly. But they are hard at the ball and their effort is good. Maybe Newnes needs a spell to show him that he is not an automatic inclusion every week, just like Acres and Dunstan have had to earn their spots. He may come back a much better player. Webster on the other hand is interesting, he seems to have pace which we lack, he can win his own ball but he is just risky in defence and turns the ball over too much in dangerous spots, maybe we try him forward as a pressure player? I would be interested to know if others are frustrated with these 2 players, they seem to have gone backwards.

Re: Webster and Newnes
Was mentioning Newnes this week and how he has flown under the radar of criticism, I feel his football has reached a plateau.
He is supposed to be at his peak and yet he really has become quite average .
Webster threatens to be outstanding but he butchers the ball like you said it’s very frustrating.

Re: Webster and Newnes
Agree on Newnes.
I thought Jimmy was our best against North and was very good by foot, hitting up the difficult inboard pass frim defence several times lace out.
Not so impressive last week admittedly.
But he earns his spot IMO....Newnes needs a run in the magoos.

Re: Webster and Newnes
Both players had their debut under Watters and the previous coach must have done an ok job with these guys if you look at their age and the progress they made to earn their spot in the seniors. If they are not improving at the moment it is probably a reflection of the lack of development under Richo. The most striking evidence is the development of top rated junior footballers in Billings and McCartin
The op makes some very good suggestions. Why hasn't Jimmy been tried in another position? Why have we been consevative instead of being brave and trying something different to improve the team?
I wouldn't be surprised if Newnes was dropped, but if Richo and selectors are true to form, they'll back in their guy week after week and we'll get the same sort of lacklustre results. I expect a bottom 8 finish for the next 2 years

Problem he has gone from an very good kick to a poor kick. Unfortunately our club seems to specialise in this.
These kicks are what kill us. They deny us goals, but set them up for the opposition. We simply have way to many poor users of the ball.

Re: Webster and Newnes
The whole team appears to have gone backwards. They can’t all be players who reached their peak. See what you’re saying but I reckon the coaching and development staff is the place to look, not some ngling out one or two players who have gone backwards. So many of them have.nw7 wrote:I never watch replays of games we lose but I thought I would have a look at the 1st Quarter against the Crows because sitting at the game I thought we actually played well against a very good Team even with our overall skill level was poor. Re: Webster and Newnes
I live in Perth.
Last year against WCE, Jimmy kicked the ball wildly off the ground without picking it up.
It went straight to an Eagle, who kicked a goal.
He has a bad habit of not looking before he kicks it.
The turnovers cost us goals all the time.
Drop him until he learns to kick correctly.

Re: Webster and Newnes
Webster a very sloppy AFL player. Symbolises exactly where we are at. Could be good but gets lazy with his kicking and loses concentration and can slaughter the ball at times.
Newnes is a very good half back flanker, one of about 78 on our list!
Needs to go to half back and stay there as is not a winger or midfielder.

Interesting on newnes too, we are missing newnes checking in defence as well, he is under too much pressure as a mid

Re: Webster and Newnes
I love Newnes because of his attitude and effort. Top notch.
But he is a ball butcher big time. Needs a spell to sharpen up his disposal effiency.

Re: Webster and Newnes
They are both solid B grade players and will never be A grade. They won't improve too much but are still required players. If they end up getting replaced by better kids and/or players from other clubs then so be it. If anything, they will then become good backups for the positions they can play. I like their commitment to the club though. Top shelf in that area.

Re: Webster and Newnes
I actually thought Newnes was one of our best players on Saturday.
I thought his game lifted a couple of notches from previous two weeks.
Several of his efforts were absolutely outstanding.
Admittedly, a few were also gruesomely incompetent.
Each week our best ball winners also make the most "critical errors".
Depends what you notice.

Re: Webster and Newnes
I hate it when Webster has the ball. He will turn it over about 50% of the time. He also usually falls over. Yes he busts his gut to get to the contest but is frantic when he gets there. And his mind is not calm. It shows. I personally think he is a liability to the team and really damages our chances to win a game.
Newnes as been a solid AFL footballer for about 4 or 5 years. I like his playing style. Lately his disposal has dropped. If he went back to the 2's and came back renewed like Savage that would be a team bonus.

Re: Webster and Newnes
Remember folks, Newnes had an arthroscopic clean out of his knee a few weeks before the JLT series. He was on restricted training for awhile. That could still be impacting a little on his kicking. Just like Joey did in his last season, Newnes kicks seem to float more up into the air than cover distance accurately. There still could be some tenderness in Jill’s knee, resulting in lack of penetration with his kicking.
Admittedly I’ve only seen 1 and a quarter matches on TV so far this season, so I’m only musing

Re: Webster and Newnes
Webster could be a beautiful kick, except every kick appears to be drilled. When u try and drill the ball, there is always mis kicks. The other thing is quite often he tries to drill the ball whilst kicking across his body. Just about the hardest kick to do in footy.
Newnes is very average. I thought he was going to take the next step a couple of years ago but he never did. Unfortunately he's a big reason we're a poor team atm. Guys like him, Webster, Armo, Gilbert Steven all need to be a class above where they are currently at

Re: Webster and Newnes
They both have 80/20 kicking.
Can kick like lazors.....
But then the two out of ten are like pigs.

Agree- these guys really should have all done better, and done it more consistently. That's one of the reasons we are not going the next step.Moods wrote:Webster could be a beautiful kick, except every kick appears to be drilled. I would add Geary to that list. That's as good as Geary is going to get.
