2018 AFL Captains Ratings

Post: # 1715554Post Sanctorum »

Had a look at how the 18 AFL clubs captains compare for season 2018 on both Supercoach and AFL Fantasy (courtesy Footywire):

Adelaide: Tex walker - $473,600/$658,000
Brisbane: Dayne Beams - $557,600/$731,000
Carlton: Marc Murphy – 595,000/$756,000
Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury - $586,500/$765,000
Essendon: Dyson Heppell - $547,300/$732,000
Fremantle: Nat Fyfe - $597,000/$667,000
Geelong: Joel Selwood - $562,000/$685,000
Gold Cast: Steven May - $462,100/$539,000
GWS: Callan Ward - $548,300/$653,000
Hawthorn: Jarryd Roughead - $475,800/571,000
Melbourne: Jack Viney - $496,900/638,000
North Melbourne: Jack Ziebel - $493,600/$656,000
Port Adelaide: Travis Boak - $467,800/$647,000
Richmond: Trent Cotchin - $665,000/$667,000
St Kilda: Jarryn Geary - $362,400/$444,000
Sydney: Josh Kennedy - $562,400/$679,000
West Coast: Shannon Hurn - $487,200/$561,000
Western Bulldogs: Easton Wood - $352,800/$394,000

The figures speak for themselves - the 2 lowest rated captains are at Western Bulldogs and St Kilda and highlights the problem both teams face with on-field leadership. If the football skills of the team's captain are not elite they are hardly able to lead by example ("don't do as I do, do as I say") and in the heat of battle being sharp in disposal and strong in both attack and defence are crucial elements to a team's on-field success.

I am happy to be proved wrong in this assessment, and do genuinely hope that Geary can deliver what is required. But at the same time I am concerned that if he is only an average player, making an average contribution, as captain he is very unlikely to ever be dropped to make way for a better player. Given that St Kilda have brought in two very promising players in Logan Austin and Nick Coffield for the defensive lines, I hope the selectors will choose the best players irrespective of their leadership positions. As someone posted elsewhere on this forum recently, in 2017 there were times where this did not always happen.
