Yep.BackFromUSA wrote:Got better in the last quarter, but lacked composure for 3/4s and disposed too quickly and to the wrong or even no options. Even the around the corner goal he kicked in the last should have been a handball to 35 streaming towards goal with space in front. Hope he improves.
In a race to a loose ball in the first few minutes, he was bumped off it and fell over. It happened a few more times. He doesn't have the strength to win a contest. Then again, either does anyone who might replace him. Neither he nor Billings seem to have any "from behind leap" to take a mark, something Cyril does have, and what is needed with such light players.

What did he do that made you think he played well?Shaggy wrote:Long played well and better than I expected. I have never rated him but today was very promising. There is a reason why the coaches want him

It's like playing snooker and you get that freaky shot into a pocket by pure ar** not class,
and you talk about it for days afterwards.
So just that one highlight stands out

Re: Ben Long
I thought he played well. I was impressed with his forward pressure. He did turn it over directly to opponents at times but he wasn't the lone ranger.
There were plenty who's disposal weren't up to scratch. Typical of a first game of the year.
Definitely leave him in for next week.

Re: Ben Long
Had a good game. He hasn't even played 10 yet and is a kid! He is up to it and provides pace, defensive pressure and has skills. We desperately need that. He will only get better.
It was a great selection now actually. Kudos to the selectors.

Re: Ben Long
I like Ben Long, plenty of upside for a young man playing his 5th or so game. Lovely kick across the ground in the 3rd quarter that hit Membrey on the tit without breaking stride. Unlike a lot of blokes in our side he put the ball out in front for Membrey to lead onto. I’ll make a big call, in a few years time there will be a lot of young kids turning up to games sporting Ben Long’s number. There is a reason his face was plastered over the membership sheds in saints merchandise.
and that's the bottom line

He did enough to keep his spot. We'll see if he can do a bit better against North, if not, there are others waiting.Moods wrote:Why?Bruce G McAbee wrote:He deserves to hold his place for next weeks game against North.

I can remember one handball in tight on the members wing that opened the play right up. It was super quick and amazing vision. Re: Ben Long
I haven't understood what the coaches see in him, but yesterday I saw it. Some strong marks, a bit of pace, getting into the right places (couldn't find the ball previously) and a goal. Still needs to improve A LOT but has plenty of time.

Except… in just his fifth game, Long's numbers were equal or better than Mav's much lauded 2016 averages.ace wrote:Mav can get those stats without getting out of bed.takeaway wrote:SaintPav wrote:1 kick, 6 handballs.

Re: Ben Long
Don't forget the pressure he brings. Always tackling when not in possession and chasing hard all day. Easily his best game and now gets to go back to back

There's something about him, just needs to find it a bit more. I'm glad he kicked that late goal, will give his confidence a shot.

Deserves another run next week. Could become our ‘1 percenter’ king plus pick a few cherries on his way through.
