POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
I see AFLX as an unlikely but possible threat to our traditional game.
Have a look at T20 and how it has effected ODI’s for example. Plus look at Tests and how
they struggle unless it’s the Ashes.
Kids due to iPads have shorter attention spans now than thy did a decade ago. Well that’s my observation as a parent of young (and now a teenage) kids.
This AFLX rubbish may appeal to them. It’s quick, it’s “fun” (ie they’ll play music/fireworks etc) and will seem cool to those that aren’t heavily into the 120 minute format.
Leave it for overseas markets IMO

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
I think there is a place for it in this day and age.
I don't feel it will ever seriously threat our traditional game.
May only threat other entry level sports at a young age.
Games to short.
Possibly incorporated into training exercises.

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
Should be fun. At least we get to play on Etihad rather than out in Wangarrata or North Queensland! The only thing I'm worried about though is the break between games and whether that would affect the players - especially since this is to be an 'explosive game'. I think it would've been better to have two separate groups of players go out in the two games.

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
You can't blame the AFL for trying this out. They are a multi-million sporting organisation that is constantly trying to stay in the news and generate interest all year round. I will have to reserve judgement until I watch a game...if I actually bother.
It might appeal more to the "upside down KFC bucket head gen z" or whatever they are these days more than the mature supporter.
The Saints should just be using this as a tool to give young blokes a game or to improve someone's fitness that might have missed some pre-season training.

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
i assume they are wanting to develop it for overseas markets given the lack of suitable ovals for Aussie Rules to be played on there. I don't think its intended as a rival to the full game. Why the negativity towards it?!

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
I don't want it to fail. A shortened version of the game seems inevitable, given how well 20/20 has gone. Smaller ovals and less time appeals to the modern consumer. I'd like to watch a couple of games before passing judgment.
"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Well if it’s meant for overseas markets then test it there.Drake Huggins wrote:I don't want it to fail. A shortened version of the game seems inevitable, given how well 20/20 has gone. Why the negativity?

Do you want this POS to be popular in Oz and become a threat to our traditional great game ?

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
Sorry to be grouchy de Gruch, but yeah...hopefully it's the indoor cricket of Australian football. It's been brought on by the AFL's international push and the obvious lack of infrastructure, not through need or want. The 'improved scoring' angle is BS...have a look at the 1978 VFL season if you want to see 'improved scoring'.

How would it become a threat to the traditional game? I just don't see that at allsaintspremiers wrote:Well if it’s meant for overseas markets then test it there.Drake Huggins wrote:I don't want it to fail. Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
Just hope the coaches don't get too upset if a player does an ACL before the real season starts. I'd prefer to see a 34 round home and away season. Unfortunately the AFL don.t appear to be in a hurry to have an even competition. I think we'll be stuck with an AFL orchestrated FIXture for a long time.
Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
This is the greatest deal ever folks! Believe me. X-rated AFL! (Melanoma is keen to get involved.) Fits perfectly with my great friend ? ? ?'s visionary business model for St Kilda. Casinos, brothels and coal mines. Nobody knows these things like me (and ? ? ?), believe me. #makingtheX-ratinggreatagain

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
I don't think it's any threat to the traditional game at all. it's just a marketing gimmick to showcase AFL around the world on rectangular fields.
Should be more comfortable to watch this than an intra-club at seaford.

Every game in the world has preseason games.
In fact - jumping straight into real games where players can't be managed and build match fitness probably magnifies the risk 100 fold.

I'm yet to watch a game of it, but I'm not liking what I see so far. Keep Mickey Mouse out of our great game!

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
ffs. how can you not like it if you are "yet to watch a game of it"? Typical negativity from some on here is so boring. The game is always evolving. The players are all professional athletes and the tactics and coaching is so much more complex than it was in the60's and 70's, but I have a feeling that with the format of AFLX we'll get to see more skills like we used to. It's not quite going to be kick to kick and take speccies but it'll bring back an element of those traditional skills imoSainternist wrote:I'm yet to watch a game of it, but I'm not liking what I see so far. I love a contest and I love the defensive aspect of the game, however I think this could help to create a different look for the AFL and for fans who are sick and tired of seeing continuous stoppages with 20 players bunched up within a 10 metre radius

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
haha - after reading the 'rules' i now want it to fail. what kind of groupthink mentality pushed these through?
"Played with a silver football.
Goals from outside 40m are known as ‘Zooper Goals’ and are worth 10 points."
why did they omit "the abba song 'supertrooper' to blare out after every zooper goal and zooper icy poles to rain down onto the crowd"

It's 20/20 cricket except that the greasy chicken bucket is replaced by some guy taking a dump on another guy's head.
And as an afterthought they've added a lady in a rainbow top to tick the inclusive boxes.
Top shelf!
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Re: POLL: Do you want AFLX to fail?
it makes sense to try some variation for the overseas market but this is coming of as a little tacky. I still hope it succeeds to some degree and it will be good to see the some rookies play for the first time.
Fingers crossed no injuries

The fruit salad of inclusivity. Where's the junior female player? Blatant misogyny. Triggered! At least, like a Madonna concert, there seems to be something to satisfy the other side of the fence.

Yep, I'm approaching it with an open mind.Spinner wrote:For the game strategically, had to happen.
Looking forward to watching new draftees and some skills.
It's pretty irrelevant for Victoria and the other football states with ovals are in abundance.
But outside of that, a concept that could work is worth exploring.
And if it fails, so what - at least there was some fun along the way.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Damn straight I do.
Utterly ridiculous concept with no purpose to it.
AFL football WILL NEVER be a "thing" overseas, no matter how bad the imbeciles at HQ want it to be.
