Emerging key forward Paddy McCartin has reaffirmed his commitment to the St Kilda Football Club, signing a two-year contract extension.
The 21-year-old put pen to paper to remain in red, white and black until at least the end of 2020.
Recruiting and List Manager Tony Elshaug said McCartin was an important signing as the club continued to develop its young talented list.
“It’s a great sign when one of your emerging players recommits to the club long term as Paddy has done,” Elshaug said.

Re: Paddy Extends contract
I'm sorry - but we've just signed a 3 year deal on a young bloke who has been in the system 3 years now, and is one concussion away from retiring. Up until now he probably hasn't featured in our best players once and has only showed glimpses of what he is capable of. I just reckon it's a massive risk. I'm aware that other clubs have been circling but I reckon 2 extra years was unnecessary.saintbrat wrote:http://www.saints.com.au/news/2018-01-2 ... -extensionEmerging key forward Paddy McCartin has reaffirmed his commitment to the St Kilda Football Club, signing a two-year contract extension.

Seems more like wishful thinking.
Very high risk strategy.
I hlvwey much doubt other clubs have been circling and strongly suspect this an old chestnut from his player manager.
The Geelong rumour is very likely to be BS put out by his manager to get a better deal.

Re: Paddy Extends contract
Smart move. He hopefully isn’t getting paid much given his issues.
IF he comes good we’ve then either got him cheap or it significantly increases what other clubs have to
offer us for a trade.
If he’s still a dud say next year it will be in keeping with our strategy of always keeping a player on for a year or two too long!

Re: Paddy Extends contract
Only a 2 year extension on top of his previous deal that concluded at the end of 2018.
Most likely at a lowish contracted rate given his history to date.
Prudent move as:
- if in 2018 he starts to show promise in the firsts his contract value would have zoomed and offers from other clubs would multiply
- keeps the club in control if he does want go to another club
- if he has an ok to good to great year, whatever he signed for will be cheap
- if he has a poor year, as they most likely did not contract him at a high range, it will still be ok as a back up player.
Personally I believe the guy has talent and football smarts and we will see it more as his body improves. His diabetes has meant that his ability to improve his body takes longer.

Re: Paddy Extends contract
Good signing by the Saints, back the young fella in!
Regardless of his issues to date do you think he could not get a two year deal at another club?
We punted two years on Freeman who is yet to play a senior match.
I don't think Paddy will live up to the #1 hype, and he should never have been the #1 pick, but that is not his fault.
I do believe he can be a serviceable AFL player and play 150 matches if things go right.
Right now I'd rather punt two years than let him go for next to nothing.
Good move saints, now turn him into a player!

Re: Paddy Extends contract
See your point but I reckon we went too early. If he is as loyal as he says then if we waited until midway thru next year to offer him a contract he would take it. If he is playing well then he gets paid what he is worth then that is fine by me. If he is playing like crap again and to be honest he hasn't done or shown a lot, or he gets another concussion, then we get to honestly access his future with us.Joffa Burns wrote:Good signing by the Saints, back the young fella in!

I don't believe any other club has seriously made a play for him. Why would they? 22 games in three years and none of them brilliant isn't exactly a must have player.

1/ Only a fool would rely on loyalty alone. Though if you want to strengthen any loyalty bond you do so committing up front rather than by sitting back and waiting.DJ Higgins wrote:

Definitely wouldn't rely on loyalty alone but if a reasonable offer is made players stay rather than go. Plus you know as well as I do contracts don't mean a lot nowadays and get broken often. And I can not think of a better incentive for a player to perform than his future and now that incentive is gone and in it's place security which can lead to complacency. And loyalty and bonds mainly comes from the men that run out beside you and put there bodies on the line for you. And why would it be too late by next mid next season? Have an ongoing dialogue like most players do and let him know where he stands. Most players do their contracts at season end anyway? And why give him a 2 year extension? 1 would have sufficed.

Re: Paddy Extends contract
On SEN, Dal Santo said it was a great signing and he has all the tools to become a good player. He just needs some time due to playing key position and more luck injury wise. Now Riewoldt has gone, it will make him step up too. He also mentioned Spud Frawley reckons he has some of the best hands in the AFL. I have faith these two greats of the game know their stuff.

Good business to sign Paddy now. I would have tried to sign him for a longer term because if he stays fit and on the park we will be paying heaps more to retain him after 2020

In another era he probably would have played more .
All teams these days are conservative when it comes to head clashes.
Maybe he's been unlucky or maybe he just needs to keep his noggin out of the way.
I hope that this is his breakout season
Kicks at least 50 goals and leads us to the promised land.
