Missed Tom McCartin by one pick!

Post: # 1707834Post saintspremiers »

Is that a blessing or a curse?

Poor Paddy, he must’ve been hoping his little bro would come to the club!

Would have we taken him though at pick 34???

I remember being excited when we got Raph Clarke.

I don't know anything about Tom, but Claravino looks like a very good key defender. Not easy to come by.

They knew we would take him.
Trout was going to take the bait.
A blessing that another fish beat him to it.
One McCartin not living up to expectations is bad.
If little bro proved a flop Trout would be sushi.
Now if little bro proves to be a superstar he can say we would have taken him but he was already gone but we will try to lure him to club if we can.

They might try to lure big bro to play with little bro though.

Sometimes you can just be lucky.

Like Collingwood took Jaidyn Stephenson at 6
If Stephenson turns out to be the superstar of the draft St Kilda can sit back and say he was not available at pick 7
If he collapses in the middle of the MCG the Collingwood medics get it in the neck and our recruiters and medics can mouth the word incompetent at them.
But nothing can save our recruiters from memories of taking Paddy at number 1.
Yes at No1, not somewhere later in the draft.

Personally (opinion only)... I don’t reckon he was on our radar.

Not a key defender which was obviously a concern, don’t need a key forward for depth just yet... fairly conflicting reports as to how good he is. A few scouts suggest that a 30s pick is way overs for a guy whose game isn’t developed enough to warrant it.

What are you trying to say? Our recruiters should have known Paddy would keep getting himself concussed and therefore should not be taken at number 1? If it makes you feel better. How stupid are the recruiters who just took Brayshaw as number 2 despite his brother also having a track record of concussions.

Shame.
He might be the next Anthony Harvey.

We did interview him. He is a bit of a bolter who came up the order as the year went on. Plenty of potential, but I'm happy we got Oscar Clavarino. At this stage, at least, better exposed form than Petty and they are similar types.

"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Taking Paddy at pick one was a mistake that has become clearer over time. I don't like getting players with medical issues to start with but we had a glaring lack of speedy midfield talent back then and look where we are now. Still a year away from potentially having some new speed in the midfield. People just got caught up in Roo retiring and trying to replace him with the best forward available.

I am hoping he becomes a servicable forward but I doubt he will be great based on what I have seen

Really?

Maybe they valued Clavarino higher

Don’t know if we are happy now that the club went Clavarino over Harrison Petty!

How did we let our previous recruiter go on with years of non-performance? Trying to think who the saints picked up who was AA from the picks in the draft?

In recent years, it's only been Sinclair (recruited coz he was Billings' buddy). Can't think of anyone else. The accountant was picked by the current recruitment team.
