Brownlow bits

Eleven Saints polled votes on Monday night, the same number of Richmond and Geelong players. Melbourne in contrast had 15 players receive votes, while North Melbourne had just seven.

Nick Riewoldt has been setting the benchmark at St Kilda for the best part of 20 years and it was he who secured the Saints’ first three-vote performance of the 2017 season in Round 3.

Riewoldt also polled one vote in the big win over Hawthorn in Launceston in Round 6 to finish with 153 career votes.

Riewoldt was also a finalist in the Jim Stynes Community leadership Award for his work in raising awareness of Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Port Adelaide Jack Hombsch was declared the 2017 winner.

Jack Steven may not have reached the lofty heights of previous years in 2017, but the three-time Trevor Barker Medallist did register back-to-back best-on-grounds in Round 6 and 7.

Despite a dominant start to the season, Dylan Roberton caught the eye of the umpires only once before the mid-season break. The rebounding defender was perhaps unlucky not to poll in Round 6 when he had 29 possessions (25 kicks) and two goals against the Hawks.

Jake Carlisle’s consistent season down back resulted in just a single vote, with his gallant performance in the heart-breaking loss to Port Adelaide in Round 19 his first in red, white and black.

First time vote getters included Jack Newnes, who polled in Round 10 and 14, and Jack Steele who started with a bang with a three-vote performance in Round 20 against the Eagles.

Probably our best 11 through the season, but a real paucity of votes. Expect Billings to climb next year.

The concern is that the number of players polling votes and the number of votes polled have significantly gone down from 2016.

I am one who subscribes to Brownlow and media votes being an indicator of the number of players the side has who can impact the result of any game - so the more polling better numbers is an indicator of progress toward the side we need to put on the park being in contention.

We lose 2 who were awarded votes in 2017, being Riewoldt and Montagna.

It is therefore time for some others to stand up.

Starting from the Captain, who to me is an indicator that we aspire to mediocre.

If the story on Haynes is correct that would be a starter in putting the defensive supports we need around Carlisle, Roberton and Gilbert who are guaranteed in my opinion and hopefully White and Goddard.

The needs to have McCartin and Freeman impact are obvious - along with a successful return by Armitage and the likes of Dunstan and Acres featuring in Brownlow votes.

All in all, last night was very disappointing from a St Kilda perspective and confirms that the side struggled to perform to 2016 levels notwithstanding the recruitment of Carlisle to fill the most obvious hole in our structure.

And, of course, Longer did not earn a vote.

So, again, we accept mediocre from a ruckman who can not jump in a marking contest or a rucking contest.

We need to move on from mediocre.

At the least the assessment of Steele by the Coach is spot on so hopefully this is indicative of the requirements being placed on players - and it is not just selective with similar pressure being put on all players.

It's lazy and simple analysis to just look at a few players in a team as having an impact and it's easy to just go with a popular option. If Bruce and especially Darcehole are the voices doing the commentary and if you have noobs like Lingy doing special comments what do you expect. They are in a position to influnce the footy public and the people who watch the footy. I suppose its also true for those involved in the game when they also watch the replays. Bruce Macavaney gets excited merely because Bontempelli turns up and it sounds so good ( in his mind and his producers) when he's able to say "the bont"!!!

The problem is that the voting was done by the public.
So Facebook campaigns at Tigerland and Doperville got their men up for GOTY and MOTY.

In each case the winner was actually the worst of the three nominations.

Howe was clearly the best mark.
And both Betts and "two strikes Buddy" kicked better goals.

Or to be consistently compromised why not let the fans vote on the Brownlow and the All Australian team?
