I think Alan Richardson wants us to be the Adelaide Crows
I watched them on Friday night.
They attacked the contest in numbers with manic pressure. They forced the turn over.
When they got the ball in contested situations, they fired out a few handballs around until a player went sideways or slightly forward with a short kick to a player in space.
From there, said player sped forward with and bombed it forward to a position that favoured their forwards.
It looked to me like that's what we've been trying to do all season except pass it around too much, and either kick it forward to no one, miss the target, or succeed and then butcher the shot.
I for one feel a little more buoyed with our situation. We may not have the cattle right now, but we have the depth and I think we have the plan. The missing ingredients are development and a few elite players

And you reed some black magic. We have The Gresh but need another unpredictable dynamo up forward. They have Cameron and Betts and it confuses the hell out of opposition.

Re: I think Alan Richardson wants us to be the Adelaide Crow
I wish this were true but the sad truth is I think he wants us to be Port Power - and they are s***.
The Crows are a cohesive machine that plays as a team. They are well drilled. They have pace down back and up fwd. Each player knows what to do and plays their part. Team things first every time.
Port a motley crew with some good individual talent that all play as individuals. Like us.

Saints could easily do a Richmond next year. I don't expect the Saints to get into the GF next year but we could shoot up the ladder. I think a number of teams are suspect that made the 8 and might struggle next year.
We aren't far off it and are on the cusp. A couple of tweaks and changes, a couple of new players coming in and a few young fellas take the next step....you never know.

Re: I think Alan Richardson wants us to be the Adelaide Crow
It does not really matter what gameplan that he wishes to play or later (as there is not just one way to play successfully), if we continue to kick poorly at goal and have too many easy turnovers through poor disposalus.
The poor execution will hopefully improve with experience, however we also lost to teams this year that were less experienced than .
The Tigers were both younger and less experienced that GWS on Saturday night. The last time we played the Tigers they were just younger and less experienced than us (We had Roo. but no Joey or Gilbert and so next year we will be about equal). So there are no excuses for 2018 in the average age or experience of our players.
Yes we lack elite players, yes we lack very good players, but the reality is that our lesser lights are also under-performing.
Inexperience is no longer an excuse for our players, or for Richo.
We have a good platform. But we now need to start delivry more.
It is certainly not all doom and gloom though.
Steele never really got a chance to play midfield at GWS, and his 20 games with us this year were his first every as a mid and he did very well. Ironically he is exactly the hard tackling, hard working type that GWS seem to lack with their all chief and no indians team.
Billings and Gresh both look set to take the next step and moreso if they can ice more goals. But we need more of the younger tier to emerge.

Didn't realise that Richmond finished 13th last year. Bloody good effort from them to get where they are. Hope they go on and win it.

What's been obvious watching the finals, is how different the game is played compared to Home & Away games.
Our gameplan is a finals gameplan, you can have Plan Bs and Cs, but it all comes down to pressure and winning the one on one more than your opponents.

Re: I think Alan Richardson wants us to be the Adelaide Crow
Our game is nothing like the Crows - in style, it is the exact opposite. In their match against Geelong, as in almost every other game this year, the number of kicks they have is almost double the number of handballs - on Friday night, 254 kicks and 128 handballs. Richmond were almost as good, 203 kicks to 130 handballs. Their opponents both played like us - about the same number of kicks and handballs. And this was right throughout the game, not just an over use of handball to get them back into the game.
Now if Alan Richardson is instructing us to play like Adelaide then he has been singularly ineffective. Bozo the clown might as well be coaching the team. If he is instructing the team to actually play this way, then Bozo the clown is coaching the team. Either way, he should be sacked. We then need to produce woeful results for the next five years and recruit blokes who can kick both feet during the period and in ten years time we will win a flag.

We were the 7th easiest side to score against and our fwd line is nothing like the one the Crows have.

See I think this is a reflection of the gap in quality/talent.
I'm not suggesting we play like Adelaide per'se... we can't. They're slick, composed, decisive and skilled.
It's what we're trying to do. We hunt the ball in numbers for patches of games but lack the fitness and structure to keep it up.
When we get it, we fire handballs around until some gets into a good position and try to switch up the play to the free side... except our decision making is often terrible, we frequently handball it around from pressured player to pressured player, often when we go side ways we botch it up and when we do get a break, the kicker bombs it forward to the opposition's defenders.

Have a look at the Crows list - no too 10 draft picks. Unlike us, they have found one roigh diamond after another . If they had our picks they'd be a certainty for the flag

The Crows as a List have far more games in them. Our pressure isn't spin, its inconsistent and inexperienced Lists are inconsistent.Con Gorozidis wrote:Is our pressure real or just marketing spin?Linton Lodger wrote:What's been obvious watching the finals, is how different the game is played compared to Home & Away games.

Sadly it only appears like a solar eclipse, long gaps between appearances-
So the clever coach points to 2 games out of 23 and says "that's our brand"
Yes, marketing spin is how our club will keep extracting the dollar.

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

I feel sorry for Richo. He inherited the worst list of players in the competition during November of 2013 and has stuck to his guns the whole time since, but will still probably fall short of his intended rebuild target. He's gone the hardest yards any coach could go, which is a thankless job.

Still remember when the Saints got beat by 150 points in the wet at the G against Hawthorn probably 4-5 seasons back. The list is ten fold better today.

That game was two or maybe three seasons ago, still close enough to hurt! One of the stats that day was that one of their forwards kicked more goals than the entire Saints side.
