'On the Road to 2023' by Jack Kerouac
Okay, I've just about come to the conclusion this rebuild has fallen through. WE NEED STAR PLAYERS, it's as simple as that. We have a handful of strong talent on our list, but no real match-winners. The club had to recruit a Kelly or a Martin at the end of this season and now it can't.
After we got Richo as our new coach following the dismissal of a deluded midget, the club finally came to the conclusion it had to cut its losses and rebuild in order to move forward. The catch-cry was "The Road to 2018", meaning that was the next viable and realistic chance of having a strong team in the competition. Sadly, it appears we'll be remaining in the category of mid table mediocrity.
By now, most of you are possibly thinking I am saying the end is nigh, well, I actually don't think that at all. I'm just sensing it will take a little longer than initially anticipated. There are actually plenty of positives to be taken from this, e.g. our list is a hell of a lot stronger than it was in 2013 and in continuing with the more long-term oriented list management, it can only improve from here. I suppose a bit of luck is involved in rebuilding. Some teams seem to get to do it a lot faster. Sure, they are generally the ones who are more well equipped with resources and have the right personnel at their disposal. They seem to find themselves getting a few heaven sent gifts along the way, like getting an absolute stud from a priority pick in the draft (we all know the draft is one huge lottery draw). Having an ideal list of players to recruit who are actually available at the right time. Clubs like Hawthorn just seem to get all the luck in this respect, but they are Hawthorn and we are not.
Having said all of the above, Alan Richardson's allotment of time in which he promised to put together a top four team (or at least a genuine finals contender) is fast approaching. In all honesty, I can't see him improving the team a hell of a lot more than 2017. Sure, there could be a chance the group of players could rise to the occasion, gel as a team and really find a way of excelling to that next level, but it is a massive ask. That is the best case scenario for Richo and if he can get that type of season from the lads, then he would prove himself a very worthy coach. In getting the team in the finals in 2018, perhaps it could make St.Kilda FC a very attractive place for a star free-agent to come in that off-season. In that situation, Richo would be signing on as coach and the premiership window may be in our sights. However, I see the most likely scenario being with us falling short of the finals once again and it would mean Richo had fallen short of delivering the promise he set about since the beginning of his coaching tenure with the Saints. With that outcome, the likelihood is we won't be requiring his service as coach any longer. It would seem harsh, as the Richo we've come to know and respect has had a fantastic working relationship with his players, staff and supporters collectively. But that is the cold harsh reality of this unforgiving, cutthroat industry.
We're in for a fascinating next 12 months of Saints footy. Buckle up and try to stick it out, as we're not all that far from seeing the light!

In 2018:
Players maturing, gelling, kicking straight, and soaring into the finals is a possibility.
Holding pattern is more likely (and terribly frustrating).
But floundering, losing all confidence, and plunging to the lower rungs of the ladder, followed by the all the carnage of a failed rebuild, is something we should also prepare for.

The Saints could easily do a Richmond next year.

Kerouac drunk himself to death. A,closet, and a closet saints supporter, obviously. Tortured, brilliant, an alcoholic, drug addict and ultimately a failure. A perfect fit.

In 1994 Plugger left us (no, not the other one, the real one with the most goals ever kicked) and we played in a grand final in '97.
In 2008 Banger retired (no, not the games record holder, the holder of the most disposals ever) and we played in a grand final in '09.
In 2017 Rooey retired (no, not that idiot from Adelaide, the holder of the most marks ever)........................
We need to win a grand final one day.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

I'm not a fan of Kerouac, either. I'm more of a Bukowski fan. Now, Bukowski would have made the perfect Saints supporter!thejiggingsaint wrote:Jack Kerouac SO overrated ! The opening line of Bukowski's first novel Post Office is "It began as a mistake" - Perhaps one of the most perfect opening sentences to a book about a person with a losing culture.

Truman Capote summed up "On the Road" thus: "that's not writing, it's typing"

Look out for Billings (60 games), Gresham (40 games), Acres (44 games), Membrey (50 games), Dunstan (67 games), Steele (37 games), Jack Sinclair (44 games) and even Seb Ross (80 games).
That is a lot of quality young players only just starting to find their way in the game.
Is there a superstar among them? Possibly. Gresham, maybe if he can develop the tank to go through the midfield. Billings, if he can get his kicking going. Acres? Who knows, but he needs and must get chances in the midfield.
I'm excited about next season and I don't think hoping to win a final is setting the bar too high. Keep the faith.

Sorry Jiggster Kerouac is an amazing writer and 'On The Road' is a masterpiece, not everybody's cup of tea but not liking it doesn't mean it's not great...

Spot on, Jiggster. We may do a Richmond, but I fear we could also do a Norf. Like them we've lost a shyteload of talent and experience in one hit. It could take a couple of years to recover from the loss of Fisher, Roo, Joey and the dumpster.thejiggingsaint wrote:OR a Brisbane? OR a "North Melbourne"? Who knows? REALLY? Now we're discussing the merits of Kerouac. This place never ceases to amaze me ...
And Richmond got a soft draw so let's see what we're servred up when the FIXture comes out later this year.

Ham on Rye and his poetry in Pleasures of the Damned are his best writing.

Bukowski loved sports. He wrote about playing baseball and football during his youth in Ham on Rye. Perhaps he lost interest in his adult years, but of course he loved going to the racetrack to watch the nags and the dogs.SaintPav wrote:Bukowski wouldn't be interested in football.Sainternist wrote:I'm not a fan of Kerouac, either.
