Re: Newnes
I'd stick with Newsney.
He helped get us through those shyte years when we were last/bottom 4 and has one bad year.
He's a BP type player - quiet achiever.
Add in a gun FA centreman and a player like Newnes will find a new gear

God you're a smart ass. Did you seriously look up his height just to contradict? I'm not talking about his size; I'm talking about his temperament. Re: Newnes
While it wasn't an explosive season, I think he might have been carrying something this year, certainly not worth giving up on… he's one of our most consistent and dependable players.
24 years old, 100+ games… we'd be mad to trade him unless something spectacular was offered up.

Re: Newnes
Last season, I read where he was the second best winger in the competition to Isaac Smith of the Hawks.
This season he didn't just play the pure winger role & occasional role through the centre position. He was more running off half back from the defensive 50 and less time roaming into forward 50 with those long kicks.
He did say in an interview on Saints.com at the beginning of the year, he was having to add a few more dimensions to his game, so his role would change. Maybe the role he played this season caused a drop in his effectiveness in comparison to last season???

Newnes is a good player and not going anywhere.
To say otherwise is stupdity. You will never have a team full of A grade guns in every position. Newnes is a B grade yes but is definately required.

So we keep a plodder who has plateaued and can't win his position at all, after 100 games?parkeysainter wrote:Newnes is a good player and not going anywhere.

Wait till he reaches 150?
2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Re: Newnes
Read my other post mate. The guy hasn't missed a game in 4 seasons. 5th in our most disposals this year. Part of the leadership group.
A solid and reliable player that puts in a 100% for his club. Any side requires these blokes. He will never be an A grade mid. He gives Richo plenty of options. Can play as a hb, mid and even hf. Very versatile.

It will be a very very long time before we get to another Grand Final and test that GF teams bottom dwellers.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Just admit it.
Most of his disposals were crap.
And I am a fan of his. He was bloody good in 2016. In fact I spent all last year singing his praises.

As supporters, we are allowed to critique our players,
and when we think they're ineffective, we can express dismay.
I thought he was great last year as well,
but this year he was either injured with OP or something,
or he has lost his mojo.

Not in our best players but a solid citizen. Moving forward he's an upgrade on our captain which tells you where our list & on field leadership is at.

Our problem is that we have too many of "these blokes".parkeysainter wrote:

Individually you can go through many on our list and say that yes he is a worthy 22 player at the Saints, and they are. Problem is that we simply to not have enough of the "very good blokes" and right here and no not one "elite bloke" and this is why we are an average team at present. We are chockful of average blokes.
Add a few more "very good blokes" and a couple of "elite blokes" and then our average blokes will also lift and be more effective and then we will have a chance of becoming a Top 4 team.

Re: Newnes
I don't think anyone believe Newness had a stellar season. It wasn't poor either. Just solid and it reflects his ability.
I'm bemused people are talking of delisting him or putting him up for trade like he is no good. Newnes is a reliable leader of the club and obviously sets a high bar for professionalism. You don't get rid of a bloke like this after one so so season where in fact his stats were fairly good anyway. Especially when the team is on the rise and on the cusp of finals.
If other existing players step up or we recruit better players and Newness get pushed out of the side then so be it. Same with any Saints player. Successful sides have good depth in all positions anyway.

Getting in some guns might let him blossom and become a lot better, because
the team dynamic has changed. He could go up a gear.
At worst, he just ends up playing Zebs because others are better, and he covers for injuries
as a 'depth' player.

I'm just a positive Saints fan that attempts to use common sense, logic, little emotion, stats, facts, etc. in posts. Been watching the Saints for a long time....or maybe the Saints media dept slips me some cash under the table to send out positive vibes on here. I wish!

Re: Newnes
I think a few people on here are a little simplistic and naive when it comes to trading players; we wouldn't get anywhere with this type of mentality.
Saying Newnes is tradeable doesn't mean he is no good. Same with Webster. If Newnes can be used to get what we want which would help improve our list overall, then he is tradeable.
Both are very tradeable because I don't see that much improvement in both of them, particularly Newnes.
It's not like they are both match winners.
The way I see it, for the right price, 95% of our list is tradeable. This tells you were our list is at.

Re: Newnes
I don't think there's a player in the AFL that wouldn't be traded for the right price... it's just that in most cases, the right price for club heroes is far above market value
