I will wait to see what Bains lands this off season re trade deals before giving him the label of 'top operator".parkeysainter wrote:Good news. Top operator old Ameet.
This was meant to be the year after 5 years of planning and so he needs to deliver.

This. If he doesn't land a big fish, his strategy will be deemed a flop. Our plan of multiple premierships is based on getting gun FA's. I'm sure if we don't this year the spin will shrug it off and say next year was always the plan for BigFish.

Re: Bains misses out on AFL gig
Don't be suprised if Ameet and co have a plan in the works for an established star (that hasn't been discussed) that a club might need to offload for salary cap space or the player wants to play in Melbourne. 2 x top 10 picks to trade will get it done.
I think we all have been caught up on J Kelly a bit too much. The list management/recruiting staff will have a plan B.

Not sure why Bains gets such glowing praise on here - i have yet to see anything to suggest he is better at his job than anyone else at other clubs, and seen enough to suggest there are quite a few doing better jobs.
So what has he done exactly to deserve the worship?

Works at that fan's club + appears accessible + uses corporate terminology + no scandal
= Guru/master strategist/elite operator
Ameet's been good. Good enough to prune down our outgoings and strip back the inflated wages in our salary cap.
But he's not really done too much to warrant the excessive praise. He's been competent; which is what you'd expect from somebody earning a large salary.
I wouldn't want to lose him, but the need for such drastic hyperbole is unnecessary.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

At present the main evidence of him doing his job well is essentially on the player contract side. THOUGH the path to do this was set before he arrived. On the contract side his first real test is going to be whether Robbo re-signs or not.
On the football sign of his portfolio the jury is very much still out, but so far based on worth of player taken by where they were taken in the draft it is performance below the competitions best.
The Carlisle trade gets a tick as an out-perform we also gained Gresham.
Trading out last years first pick for effectively two second rounders and this years Hawks first pick also gets a tick. The small caveat is supposedly that this years draft is not as strong as last years.
The Steele trade gets a tick as very good value for the pick traded.
However as an overall there is a glaring lack of class. Not enough quality has come through. So for me this years draft/trade period will way heavily on my evaluation on his performance.

'afl circles'
These are what Don Watson referred to as weasel words.
Besides Saints fans in footy forums and his mum who has praised him?
Besides being in the right place at the right time with the JOM trade what has he actually done?
Wears a nice suit
Vaguely competent
No scandals
Uses corporate lingo
Tick.
Does that make him a genius?
I think Everton FC makes a good point.

Yeah. He's useless. A dud like everyone else at the Saints. No one in AFL circles knows what they're talking about when they all say he's a top operator and is good at his role. Guess they just make it up for fun.
Might as well sack him.
Just one example below. The bloke sounds like a complete hack.

Another one. The Hawks wanted him as their CEO this year which is widely known. The most successful club in AFL history basically wanted him.

Nowhere does that article say that hawks wanted him or he had any chance at that job.
Did he apply?
Did he withdraw?
Why apply if he's not interested?
That's a BS article that looks like it was released by a PR firm in his behalf.
It actually states nothing.
