Re: Twenty years ago today
as a youngster i remember that the win over port adelaide (pretty sure it was port adelaide) confirmed that we finished on top of the ladder for the first time as a young st.kilda supporter. i couldnt wait to go to high school and rub it in.
most kids were talking about di however after her tragic accident. even at home during that day everyone seemed quite sad about di whereas i was jumping with glee over the sainters. it was a bit weird.

And in the last 5 minutes of the bloody game! And then, in the next 15 minutes of the very next game (the QF against Brisbane at VFL park), our premiership hopes went right out the window when Spider broke his collarbone. This was jinx squared.

Factoring in Stewie's sister and Winmar's dad.
Anyway, even had we won the flag in 1997 we'd still be botching about our 20 year premiership drought!

Re: Twenty years ago today
Funnily enough, I was overseas when I heard about Princess Di and I only heard about it because they interrupted coverage of the Saints game - which I was sitting up to listen to in the early hours of the morning - to tell us. I can't remember if it was on an onscreen ticker but I do remember exactly where I was sitting at the table with my computer. There was a very weird vibe in London that day, I can tell you. Much weirder than after other wins we had that season.

Was far more upset about losing Big Lazar than Diana Spencer.

2009 was worse for me because I didn't think I would experience the heartache of 1997 a second time. The pain is magnified big time when you are at the GF.saynta wrote:1997 grannie was the worst day of my life.

What a bunch of tragics.
The fact that the 1st poster remembers Lazar's knee to this day 20 years back is hilarious (not having a go at you either 1st poster).

Re: Twenty years ago today
I reckon I jinxed us that year: I spent the whole footy season backpacking around the globe and got back on August 27. Watched the Port game on tv to see us finish top. Heard about Di earlier that day.
Then I went to the QF at Waverley and watched Spider break his collarbone
If i hadve stayed overseas another month we may have been Premiers

Spider should have played through it.
