Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
Is Josh Kelly worth our two 2017 first round draft picks ?
Let me test you.
In 2014 we had the No1 draft pick.
I don't remember too many saying we should trade it away for 2 later top 10 picks.
In 2017 we have 2 later top 10 picks with points equivalent to the No 1 pick.
So the question I pose is with the benefit of hindsight and an anomaly where instead of being available in 2013 Josh Kelly becomes available in the 2014 draft.
Now rerun that 2014 draft.
Do you take
McCartin (I accept that his family, type 1 diabetics and Trout would say yes)
Petracca
Angus Brayshaw
Jarrod Pickett
Jordan De Goey
Caleb Marchbank
Paul Ahern
2metre Peter Wright
Nakia Cockatoo
Somebody Else
OR
Josh Kelly
If you take Josh Kelly you are admitting he is worth our 2 off 2017 first round picks.
Lets here your call. Kelly or not.

Problem with all that is Kelly would cost over 1M a season. The others are far cheaper

our luck to get the number one pick in a poor draft year. We should have been bottom one year earlier.

We didn't even need to finish bottom in 2013, just one place lower on the ladder and Kelly is ours.desertsaint wrote:our luck to get the number one pick in a poor draft year. We should have been bottom one year earlier.
St Kilda is so hopeless they can't even tank properly.
But how arrogant is Brad Scott, insists on beating Brisbane - result instead of pick No 1 he gets pick No 4

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
firstly it is clear we should have traded pick 1 for 2 top ten picks in 2014. That is not. a knock on McCartin ..
And secondly, 2 first rounders for Kelly is a no brainer. Easily worth it

If Melbourne did not trade out pick 2 they would have taken Billings, is what they claim.. we would have got kellyace wrote:We didn't even need to finish bottom in 2013, just one place lower on the ladder and Kelly is ours.desertsaint wrote:our luck to get the number one pick in a poor draft year. But the Billings selection is far from an error.. he is a very good player and maybe a star... If Kelly and Bont are stars, we can cop that..
The non trade of pick 1 for 2 first rounders in 2014, that was an error. If we were n ot into Petracca like the rest of the AFL, we should have leveraged that... everyone wanted pick one for Petracca, we did not particularly want him.. so we were getting paid overs for it and shoudl have jumped..

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
3 and 8 were supposedly on the table for pick 1 in a complicated deal. It fell through and the rest is history. We may well have ended up with McCartin anyway, plus another at 8, who in that draft was Peter Wright. Things that make you go hmmmmmm..................
I think you're pretty tough, don't I?

I think, yes.
And ask for their second round pick and give that for Lever.

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
Yes I think he is. Will be a top 5 player if he isn't already.
At 21 yrs old that is 10 years of elite service.
Pick 7 and pick 9/ 10 are unknowns.
However,
Whitfield for pick 7, hold pick 9/ 10 plus a FA might be a closer call.
But in the end if Kelly is available I'd go with him

No, not after tonight's game, let some other club mortgage the farm to get him.

It is a genuine question imo.
Why not spend a million dollars on analysis and just get both top ten draft picks right?

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
If the crowd firmly believes Kelly, a small mid in an artificially grown not so special team, considering talent available, is the answer to our prayers then odds are he is not. Its the big forwards that kick bags and scrooge key defenders and giant rucks that give teams the finals edge. Ross and Billings in GWS would look better than Mr Kelly. If he wasn't coming out of contract would he be seen as the greatest thing since wholemeal bread - I'd suggest not. His manager is good at spruiking and J. Kelly is clearly a top talent but talk of 2 first round picks and or $1 mill. is a bit over the top for a littlish bloke. And all the various opinions will probably never be tested as he will stay in Bankstown or Parramatta or wherever GWS is in NSW. And be rich for no extra risk.

On Kelly's form last night , if he was in our team there would be half the forum wanting him dropped or traded
And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf"

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
He's 6cm shorter and 9kg lighter than Patrick Dangerfield. You will note that Geelong often kick out to a one on one contest between Dangerfield and his opponent and a contested mark usually follows. Kelly never takes contested marks. His disposal is quite good, but he is another one-sided player (unlike Dangerfield and Martin). I would not rank him in the top ten midfielders currently playing. So, the question is, what is the quality and depth of this year's draft? Given our recent "success" in draft selections, we cannot have great confidence that our selection team have any idea about the next crop of draftees. Other than Brisbane, we have easily been the worst at picking players in the last 15 years.
Barring a couple of hoped for, but unexpected, wins today, we are likely to get picks 7 and 9. Will any quality midfielder be available by pick 7? If the answer is no, then giving up pick 9 as well will depend on whether we are prepared to give up "duds" in trades to get better selections. I would, and you all know which "dud" I would get rid of first, although whether any team would give even a second round selection for him is open to question. But be clear, if we take Kelly, we will not be getting a champion and next year will see a "championless" Saints team for the first time ever. Even in the 1940s the team had Harold Bray and in the 1980s we had Trevor Barker.

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
not at all, one and a sweetener (e.g. Webster) but not two and maybe get a later round pick back . GWS will want something big to go with our pick so be real they wont take a fringe player.
We need two players this draft, an outside mid and a key defender. If Carlisle or Brown goes down/suspended then we are in trouble at the back. With our 2 draft picks we will be able to get both and quite good ones. Based on the top 10 list above there is talent to be had outside the top few so I say we let our draft team do their job and get it right.

Re: Is Kelly Worth Our Two Picks
No way. First, he won't come so its really just us having a chat. Secondly why? Because we need another midfielder who stands on the outside waiting for a top 10 ruck to tap the ball to a top 10 mid who fights for the ball THEN handballs to Kelly who is standing there just waiting...we already have that guy ( minus the top 10 ruck and ground grunting mid who rip heads off to get the ball).
He and everyone except us, can see we are at best 2-3 years from serious finals. He is not the answer why pay him like he is the Messiah?
