The Riewoldt End - should we keep it???
A bit torn on this one - I despise the cheek of Essendon renaming the ends of Etihad for their home games, especially Lloyd who was a good player, but not really deserving of that sort of honour - it comes across a bit tacky.
But having the Riewoldt End for our home games seems fitting for a guy who has done so much for our club, he really has been the poster-boy for our club throughout our whole Docklands Era.
We lack any real feeling of it being OUR home ground, maybe this would help??
Thoughts??

He's kicked the most goals at the venue, should be permanent

Keep it until another name is ready to takes its place.
The Tiger and the Lion may be more powerful, but the Wolf does not perform in the circus.

Retiring any number is just silly IMO.

Considered a mark of respect in quite a few other competitions.
But we at St.Kilda know better.
Since we are such an exceptional organisation.

I prefer our tradition of passing it on to a young player as Nathan Burke, Stewie Loewe and Lenny didBernard Shakey wrote:This is AFL, not some American sport!bigred wrote:Considered a mark of respect in quite a few other competitions.

Re: The Riewoldt End - should we keep it???
the Lockett and Coventry ends should not change . They are the two greatest goalkickers the game has produced .
St Kilda FC should simply refer to the ground forever more as Riewoldt Oval !
To keep the AFL happy we can call it Riewoldt oval at Etihad stadium , or whatever the sponsors name is at the time .

We are just smarter. Who wants players running around with 987 on their back because you keep retiring jumpers. Silly convention in my opinion.bigred wrote:Considered a mark of respect in quite a few other competitions.

The numbers have meaning, but each player has to make a number THEIR number.

Put up a statue of him outside the ground, MCG style.
I think you're pretty tough, don't I?

I always thought it was highly disrespectful -- and oh-so-Essnedon-like-- to change the name from Coventry to Lloyd.
On Sunday we took a leaf out of the Bombers' book.
I hope it was for just one match.

Yes. What has Coventry got to do with anything? The second highest goal kicker? So what! He's not the highest and 2nd doesn't cut it. Locket has kicked the most goals in the VFL/AFL and Rooey has kicked the most at Etihad Stadium (our home ground) so I think the Rooey end should stay for our home games there and should also become permanent.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

With that logic Essendon will soon be covering the Lockett End with Hird or something.Jacks Back wrote:Yes. What has Coventry got to do with anything? The second highest goal kicker? So what! The Coventry End was called the Coventry End and I've no doubt his descendants are very
proud of that. What extreme arrogance to come along and cover it up.
Get a Riewoldt Stand or a Riewoldt Bay. I'm sure Riewoldt himself doesn't give a toss.

But it's an "events" stadiumGregPackhamsHeadband wrote:Put up a statue of him outside the ground, MCG style.
"Events" other than sport are Número Uno at Etihad.
Even with the AFL ownership it seems that way.
If they do erect a statue, I hope it's easy to move when they (hopefully) sell up and build a new stadium elsewhere
