Sam Gilbert
Taking into account that 17 out of the 18 AFL coaches actually rate foot skills as something which is important in this game that we play (..and not just frantic tackling pressure), do you think that Sam Gilbert would get a game in any other AFL team?

Re: Sam Gilbert
He can play tall or small, has excellent pace, is a tackling machine, can go throught the midfield, and drift forward. He's a suprising effective ruckman, and can even get his own centre clearances. If he had been drafted by Hawthorn he'd probably have 3 or 4 premership medalions and be entering the twilight of his career as a legend.

I reckon he'll finish top 5 in the b&f, injury and all. Deservedly. Not too many who can play every position including ruck.

Re: Sam Gilbert
I love the guy and will never forget his efforts back in our finals campaigns, but sadly the odds are against him getting another chance. He played an important 'role' back then and I think it's great to see that he's back to some of the form he showed before his long lay off.
I think you need a balance of Gilbo type role players and A grade classy skillful players to go all the way. His ability to win the loose ball or at least contest and scrap in finals type pressure is why he gets a game. His contested marking has always been good too.
His kicking and somtimes his decision making is what prevents him from being elite. When you have a team all kicking and making decisions like Gilbo, you get what was served up against Melbourne last week.

Re: Sam Gilbert
Gilbert has been absolutely excellent this season.
Anyone who thinks to the contrary has not actually watched him play, certainly not live, and has chosen to remember only his mis-kicks. Which do exist, to be sure, but at the same time he is one of the better handballers in the team. Jack Steven's kicking is not much more accurate than Gilbo's, really.

Re: Sam Gilbert
He has a lack in effective kicking at times and has made the obvious blunder or two. But so has every person playing competitive sport at any level.
I reckon he has been a rock. Like Blake... These guys never get real praise but when they're gone we immediately feel it.

Richo said contract close to being signed for him to go around again when asked in his presser.

Re: Sam Gilbert
How good was that goal he kicked today! Too bad the umpy called a throw on Koby and disallowed it. Gilbo played another very good game. He's been very serviceable this season. Very handy player.
It was great to see him as one of the two to carry Rooey off.
