Discuss.ST KILDA hopes to secure coach Alan Richardson to a long-term contract extension before the start of next season, confident he is the man to lead its pursuit of its first premiership since 1966.
Richardson is contracted until the end of 2018 and CEO Matt Finnis said the club was confident the fourth-year coach was the right man for the job.
...
Finnis said he would prefer to re-sign Richardson before the start of the 2018 season to avoid any ongoing speculation about the coach's future.
"We haven't put a timeframe on it," Finnis said.
"My sense is that we'd probably get it done before then (the start of next season).

Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
I have been fairly bitchy about Richo but the club is onto him and it is not helpful to me to do anything but get behind him. So I officially relent with my sack Richo chatter ( unless we sack him...then I will be an arrogant immature wank who goes into told youse mode).

That is very good news. St Kilda desperately needs stability more than anything. Amazingly, but certainly not surprisingly, there was enough bleating on this forum for Richo’s head.
Look at Richmond. Damien Hardwick is now in his 9th year (I think) and I’m sure there were many Tiger supporters calling for his head as well over the past few years.
Let’s just hope that Richo does sign up for a few more years.

I don't mind if the re-sign Richo BUT there needs to be some fresh blood amongst the assistant coaches. And not just someone that is fresh to be an assistant coach either.

I have no opinion either way, I am not convinced he is a good coach. But would probably wait until mid year '18 to decide.
This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Same here, but jeez I think he is going to have to lift his tactical game, and get some fresh assistants too.The Fireman wrote:yepmbogo wrote:I have no opinion either way, I am not convinced he is a good coach. But would probably wait until mid year '18 to decide.

All pretty irrelevant anyway, until we have a good list to work with then we are treading water with any coach.
No coach would be taking the StKilda list of 2017 to a premiership.

Glad to hear this on the radio . Interestingly only Kingsley and Sexton mentioned regarding assistants so perhaps some tweaking there?

Good bloke and good coach. He will end up being one of our best coaches by the end of his tenure.
He's done well considering what he took over. The only was is up.

.
2016 included two wins against the Essendon VFL side.
15 wins was the reason the Tigers stuck by Hardwick.
They also have Caracella, Leppitsch and the X man.

Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
The most recently retired player involved at the Saints is Lindsay Gilbee (VFL coach, retired 2012).
The next most recent is Aaron Hamill (retired 2007). He left the game a decade ago.
Sexton has been with us for 11 years (!) and Kingsley for 7 years.
McPhee came from the WAFL and Welsh came from the VFL.
We don't have any assistant coaches at St Kilda who have been involved in the AFL system at another successful club in the last decade.
Not one.
No IP from Hawthorn, Collingwood, Sydney, Adelaide, Geelong, GWS or Footscray.
No recent experience at a club that's played deep in September.

Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
Wasn't that beverages first year?
Richo took over a club on the bottom so expectations need to be relative.
That said, I don't see the rush in adding years to his contract right now... would be good to see how we are playing mid next year.

Absolutely. Leppitsch and Caracella seem to have made a big difference at the tiggers. No reason we can't tread the same path next year. Fresh ideas for AR and the group.saintsRrising wrote:I don't mind if the re-sign Richo BUT there needs to be some fresh blood amongst the assistant coaches. Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
Richo needs some tactically sound people around him. The saints won't progress further with the assistants he has at the moment.
Richo looks like he is of in Zenland for much of the time game day.
Work is required
The forward line is dysfunctional.
The mid field unbalanced and is brittle.
The ruck has sorted itself out for now but a second ruck option is needed (which isn't Bruce)
Backline although could be tweeked is for the most part working.
Game plan needs to be updated urgently. Plus a plan b for when things go wrong.

Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
Richo seems like a good solid bloke and good communicator. I'd like to see some innovation and ambition next season and maybe that will come with the right assistants around him. I want next season to feel like 2004.

Beveridge had 14 wins in his first year (2015)
19 wins and a flag in his 2nd year (2016)
Saints finished 16th in 2013 - so not bottom when AR took over.

Re: Richo set to be offered long-term contract
Our decade of draft failures leading up to 2013 is pretty well documented, so I don't think sacking a coach over a win/loss record would be very productive at this stage.Con Gorozidis wrote:Dogs finished 14th in 2014

It's fair to say that Beverage had a lot more talent on hand than what Richo walked into.

Ben McGlynn. The IP didn't really help us in both the Sydney games though.loris wrote:What about the small forward who came to us from Sydney this year as an assistant? He's not listed on the coaches list for some reason.
